I said maybe for a reason. He makes good points despite being a malicious sentient blob. He wasn't the greatest evil in the game, nor was the old one. The true villain was the monumental.
+Nat Grant-Haysey Elaborate? I'm not saying you're wrong, I'd just like to hear more. I've never heard the take on DeS that the Monumental was the villain.
Mostly it is an irrational personal belief, but it was him and his kin that first unleashed the old one, and resealed it at the cost of half the world. i believe he told Allant about the old one, the soul arts and everything else because he would of had to go through the Nexus to get to the old one, and i believe that door right at the top of the stairs was how he entered. This would then logically lead to him being responsible. I have no reason to believe he is "holding the world together" and he gives you little to no help or information throughout despite wanting the demons eradicated. Even Patches and Freke provided more support and by the end the latter wanted the demons to take over but he still assists you. What does he have to lose by demons consuming everything he will gain and lose nothing in fact he will be freed from his shell. Even if his intentions are true hes just training you as a replacement monumental. I have no proof but it is my opinion. I dont believe the Old one was the true evil as it was just hungry and deliberately woken from its nap, it doesn't know what its doing. Claiming it is evil is like claiming a lion is evil for eating Gazelles As for Allant i think he just went insane seeing the inevitability that the old one would destroy all his psyche just shattered and he become nihilistic. I dont even think Mephistopheles was evil, he was just trying to keep the soul arts a secret.
*Laurence's legs melt off* Me: IT'S OVER LAURENCE I HAVE THE HIGH GROUND Laurence: "You underestimate my power" in screaming *Combos me once* Game: YOU DIED
Kinda funny how Willem and Rom are the only ones out of ALL the ppl in Bloodborne who achieved their goals and didnt get fucked over. They be chilling in Byrgenwerth mansion together until you come in and ruin their day
and to think he tried to help everyone with magic ketchup from another dimension, only for him to wind up a fiery mess in the mcdonald's playground and you have to clean up after him
Willem: "Fear the old blood, Laurence. We'll be undone by it." Laurence: "k" "It's Always Sunny in Yharnam" theme plays *Laurence Unleashes the Beastly Scourge*

Interesting that Laurence is a real easy boss to miss, and is in no way necessary to fight in order to complete the DLC. Since the Hunter's Nightmare is a punishment brought on by Kos, you could argue that killing the bosses trapped there is a mercy killing. All of the other bosses are in some way victims. Ludwig genuinely thought he was doing the honourable thing and just wanted to help people; the Living Failures were just random patients transformed into horrible mutants; Lady Maria turned her back on the hunters in remorse after what happened in the Fishing Hamlet; and The Orphan is just a baby. Laurence on the other hand is responsible for everything that happened to Yharnam despite being told it was too much of a risk. Since death would be a mercy, it's up to the player whether or not he deserves that mercy, or he deserves to keep burning in the nightmare.
What i find an intriguing detail about laurence which many people don't usally debate about is that he's on fire or differently put, his blood has become lava. There is a question whether or not it was a case after he became a beast or after he was sent into the hunter's nightmare. The latter makes more sense from certain perspective: Laurence was the one who enraged kos the most (for example he could be the one delivering the death blow to orphan or be in charge of the hunter's group who invaded the hamlet) and as ultimate punishment he was granted the fiery blood which would put him in constant state of agony for all the eternity given the fact that he's stuck in hunter's nightmare forever, quite fitting metaphor of "burning in hell".
Mauelo with the bosses they’re usually the same as they were in life when they died. i assume he turned into a cleric beast and was put down by being burned to death as fire is how all the yharnamites killed beasts
I know this comment is a year old but I just wanted to throw in some things. The whole mess in Yharnum is the fault of 3 men: Willem, Micolash, and Laurence. They all desired mankind to ascend to their next stage in evolution faster than what was natural and they did it their own way (hence Laurence breaking off from Willem). Micolash, on the other hand, wanted the "next stage" and power that came wit it fo himself and his followers instead of the improvement of mankind like the other 2. The whole fishing hamlet incident was orchestrated by Willem; he sent Maria, Laurence, Ghernam, etc. to find eyes within the residents. The School of Mensis under Micolash orchestrated the genocide of Ya'hargul, the desecration of corpses in Hemwick Lane under the witch cult, and the kidnapping of residents fo experimentation. The Choir under Willem/Laurence experimented on everybody, especially children in the orphanage, to create Great Ones and ended up mass producing the kin enemies found in Yharnum. All Laurence did by himself was bring about the scourge of beasts through abuse of the Old Blood acquired from Ebrietas
@@VenezuelanEagle The Choir wasn't under Willem though, was it? The Choir wass a high-ranking branch of the Healing Church, and we all know that that was founded by Laurence AFTER splitting with Willem.
I know this is dumb but I like to think of Laurence as Icarus. He was arrogant and flew to close to the sun and he was burnt to cinders. He didn't respect or fear the old blood like his mentor had warned him and he went to far and it ended up costing him dearly.
Laurence pushed for the usage of Blood Ministration to get closer to the Eldritch Truth. But the Scourge of Beasts overtook those who took too much blood and Willem seemed to have predicted the issue of using blood. Old Yharnam burnt to the ground because of the blood ministration's errors and the symptom of Ashen Blood was the cause of it, all leading back to Laurence. Fitting that Laurence burns for eternity after turning into a beast himself.
That's actually a proper analogy. Laurence threw caution into the wind, ruining his life and countless others. Yharnam is a cursed place because of his careless greed. Such a fascinating character.
I just adore how this is a much more sinister, “final” sounding version of the cleric beast motif. The composers of this game are just so clever. I wish more music schools would focus on video game soundtracks.
I feel like this OST doesn't get enough love. everyone talks about how amazing Gehrmans and Ludwigs OST are (and they're right, those OST's are amazing) but this one.. this one is at that level of greatness. the way it starts lets you know that you've gotten into some serious big boy shit. and then the way the song just becomes a beautiful melody around 3:03.. damn. it really is fitting for the Man who is responsible for s EVERYTHING. Laurence is such a tragic character.
Hououin Kyouma I don't think Willem was involved in what happened in the fishing hamlet. When you find him, he's the only person in the whole of Byrgernworth who isn't cursed. If he was responsible for the slaughter of the fishing hamlet, Mother Kos would have cursed him, but she didn't. He's the only one who wasn't cursed.
Laurence: _"We did it Ludwig! We saved the Old Yharnam!"_ *_sounds of screaming, yelling, gunshots, general agony, fire, and considerable amounts of distress coming from the city_*
"Back ye scallywag!" "Empty the compartments of your pantaloons or I will have to call the one formerly know as big Travis" "For what purpose,FOR WHAT PURPOSE!" *woman screaming* *gunshots* "Yep we sure did save old yharnam!"
I love how that sequence is not as much scary as it is just sad. It really emphasizes Laurence as a sympathetic, tragic character. He never wanted, after all, to start all of this, and he tried to proceed with caution as much as he could. I guess, by the sights of him, it turned out for the worst...
Late reply, I know. But, that is a recurring theme in the souls series. We meet Gwyn at the end of Dark Souls 1. Up until that point, we hear about Gwyn like he was a god. But we find him as a miserable mad hollow.
Just like Artorias we hear legendary stories about the great knight Artorias and his best friend and protector Sif just to find him being controled by the Dark Soul in a deplorable state with left broken arm, a broken shield and acting like any beast with came across (obviously being extremely more harder) sometimes we are too late to know people at their best state.
I was originally expecting this fight to be just a cheap fire rehash of the Cleric Beast. I guess that expectation didn't have any...LEGS to stand on. :)
The man who set everything in motion, the student from Byrgenwerth, the creator of the healing church responsible for pretty much everything that ever happened in the game, possibly the biggest and most important character lore wise is the most optional of all optional bosses of the game. So much that even when you first encounter him he can't even attack, so much that you have to actively look for some item hidden in the underground of a cathedral to trigger his boss fight.
Personally, Bloodborne made me 'feel' for a lot of the bosses, more than the those in the Souls series. Obviously Sif and Artorias make me want to curl up into a ball and cry like a baby, but other then them not really. Like with Bloodborne you have Ludwig, a great hero (similar to Artorias) who is now nothing but a mindless beast, and when you talk to his head he says he only wanted his hunters to be 'honorable spartans' (i didn't have the heart to tell him no). Laurence, a man too pig-headed for his own good, just wanted to help people, but he messed with crap not meant to be messed with, and became a beast that in my eyes is almost reminiscent of Sif, you injure his legs and he falls over before eventually falling off completely, I felt like I was putting a rabid dog out of its misery more than anything( not to say Sif was a rabid dog mind you) Gehrman, who was there since the beginning, taking the burden to be bound to the dream upon himself, killing hunters so they wouldn't have to suffer as he does. Hell even Rom, the big bitch she is, a person who became a Great One and lost all sense (In the Japanese version her name literally means 'the retarded spider' correct me if I'm wrong) and now her only purpose is to sit in the middle of a lake doing nothing. And Logarius, true he was probably a bit radical in his actions, but he chose to condemn himself to undeath in the freezing cold to make sure no one found the Queen. FromSoft's feel points are OP as hell. I know it's a long comment, sorry just felt I should say it. :)
+Aknaught92 Laurence is more Manus than Sif. One of the originators of the nightmare that exists in the present day. Formerly powerful (Manus was more raw power while Laurence was influence) today they're nothing but mindless monsters endlessly looking for something special to them. For Manus it was the pendant, for Laurence it's his skull. But in both scenarios their hopes died long ago and now they're only the epicenter for the tragedy and destruction that have waylaid their respective worlds. The difference between Dark Souls and Bloodborne is that in Dark Souls the catastrophe that is the Dark was unavoidable. Everyone was just doing everything they could to stop or delay it. In Bloodborne the catastrophe of Yharnam was entirely of their own making and Laurence and Willem have no one to blame but themselves.
True I just meant the fight itself, you damage Laurence's legs, he falls over trying to attack you. Hurt him enough and his legs fall off completely. The more you damage Sif, he starts limping, falling over that sort of thing. That's what I meant, but I totally agree with the Manus comparison.
I think that 2:06 represents the mind of Laurence as an apprentice, calm and without influence of the blood, as you hear by the solo voice and violin reciting a "creed", being a soft thing to hear. 2:25 It's become more 'caotic', with the add of more instruments, turning it 'disturbing', as if Laurence was start to feeling the effects of overusing the blood, but almost unnoticed. The creed-like thing start to be just a little overshadowed by the instruments. 2:44 It explodes when more instruments is added, so shockable that it's almost do you forgot about everything you heard before this by being so "different". But it's unnerving to hear, it's so chaotic and disturbing, causing a sensation of fear. Laurence sure was afraid to everything that he did and that was happening to whoever used the blood, but the exposition was already did, there was no coming back to that "peace". The creed continues. 3:03 The tranquility comes, peaceful, brings heals to ears, you dont even hear the creed anymore. But this is not a calm tranquility, note that a dissonance from another instruments soon happens, Laurence was already drunk past limit. What the hunters become when they are drunk? Beasts, thristy for blood. Laurence was feeling the same. The calm represents him accepting what he was going to be. So the progression feels like "you're" being well received to whatever thing you would to transform, like nothing but good things. Nothing but escape from death. But in the end we know what happened to the clerics, right? 3:41 Right here its just caotic, you cant stand hearing it anymore, you just want it to end! Note that now the creed came back, but it is like a festival, SANGUINE SANCTA! This is Laurence beging this to end, he is suffering like he never suffered. All he want is silence. Its angustiating to hear this, but it sounds so festival!! You want to stop, but you just cant do you do it. Myself repeat just this part a lot, it's addicting, i'm liking this so much more right know. To me this is the music represeting Laurence's mind behind his demise. English is not my first languange and i never did a learning. Sorry for grammaticaly errors. Thank you to the RUclipsrs T B Skyen and Davi Vasc who made me feels like more "sensitive" about things and music or context which represent that thing.
god damn that almost made me cry, maybe its just because i know the story and can kind of understand the emotion the song is trying to convey, but god DAMN this is one of the best scores i have ever heard. its just exactly the sort of vibe bloodborne is built on, total fear, cosmic horror, mystery, and tragedy. and this theme in particular really conveys the tragedy of laurence, the total replacement of his consciousness with beasthood, while still conveying the immense power of the beast you're tasked with destroying. it's utterly perfect
+Toxically Masculine it really kinda reminds me of Alex Roe's Fall of Artorias remix, only darker and more terrifying. But the emotional parts stand out just as well. Everything aspect of this theme is wonderfully balanced, and probably one of the few things From manages to perfectly balance if you know what I mean.
+Toxically Masculine Thank god for you putting that into words. I was capable of understanding the tragedy part, but I couldn't musically understand everything else. You put a lot of context on this song for me. This part specifically -- "this theme in particular really conveys the tragedy of laurence, the total replacement of his consciousness with beasthood, while still conveying the immense power of the beast you're tasked with destroying."
+Toxically Masculine I think it conveys the mistake Laurence, and his associates made by using blood. Willem says "Our eyes have yet to open". Meaning humans can't physically perceive the entire spectrum of reality. We have to find another way to perceive reality on a more grander scale. Willem's path was to gain "Insight". "Insight" stemming from the word "Intuition" which means to immediately apprehend things without the need of conscious reasoning. Basically utilizing the collective unconscious mind, which is suppose to be far superior than the conscious mind when it comes to apprehension. That's why Willem meditated, and wore blindfolds to look "within". This method takes years and years of practice and effort. One of the results were Caryll Runes. They granted what would appear as "supernatural" powers when the individual's mind focuses on a particular symbol. Since the unconscious is purely subjective, it conveys things through symbols and feelings. Making it difficult for science to work with because science is purely objective, using numbers and facts based on physical evidence. Willem had a hunch that using blood would be bad. Laurence and his associates grew arrogant as most brilliant minds become, and ignored their hunches. They tried to use blood to actually hasten human evolution using more practical methods. The result is that it causes lifeforms to degrade into ghastly creatures (Beast/Kin).
+Blklee 5G I dont think kin come from drinking the blood, but from insight actually, and some sort of communion with a Great One. As Micolash says "like you once did for the Vacuous Rom, grant us eyes, grant us eyes" when talking about Kos (which at the time we thought was a word for the cosmos, but it is actually revealed to be the Great One who gives birth to Orphan of Kos in the DLC). The blood, I assume, it mutates humans into beasts either because of some incompatibility or a curse laid on it to take revenge on the Healing Church branch of the Byrgenwerth Academy.
+Lucas Biagi All of Byrgenwerth is what was cursed, not specifically the church as that is what came afterwards when Laurence left with the old blood to glean what he could from it. I take it both Master Willem and Laurence knew of this curse, but that Laurence either thought he could overcome it or cared not for superstition.
I never got a chance to fight Blue Koolaid because I could NOT bear the run up to it! At least in Hunter's Nightmare, your only real obstacle is that Cthulhu looking giant, and even then he's usually too distracted by those Yharnamites to deal with you.
kenneth quintero yea, if DS2 teaches you how to do something is how to NOT make a run up to a boss, looking at Blue Smelter, Sir Alonne, Elana (if you don't get the ABSURDLY hidden bonfires at dragon shrine), Ancient Dragon, Executioner's Chariot, Ruin Sentinels, Lud and Zallen etc. but still the worst run up of the Souls series by far are the Four Kings on NG+4, HOLY SHIT how many times I wanted to break my controller
Idk about anyone else, but I always made Laurence the last boss to kill in The Old Hunters. He just screams final boss to me. Everything from his lore to his actual fight and difficulty to his beautiful soundtrack is just perfection. I thought he was just a Cleric Beast with a fire buff and a couple new moves at first, then off came the legs and I'll never forget the feeling of being that wrong about something.
It is also the most challenging to me. I remember feeling my hands numb towards the end of the fight, and I thought I was going to have a heart attack, then I beat him and just screamed of joy and lay on the couch exhausted. So epic, truly one of my best gaming memories.
I defeated him my first time on NG+ in the third attempt, now i'm on NG+++ and i already died more than 15 times, and i don't even know if i can win, i only got him to his second phase once in all these attempts, he is lucky i love the music and the Lore, yes i get mad when i am there and die, but i try not too, also i hate the path you have to take to get to him, but i will feel so good once i get it.

8:12-8:33 hit me rly hard. I remember fighting this boss so many times, and when I heard this part of the song for the first time I became so sad. This boss is tragic.
@@hotdoghero1875same for me with the ludwig fight, the music came out of nowhere and phase 2 hits and im stunned by the music, until ludwig just kills me while im in complete awe of the eargasm that is ludwig the accursed & holy blade. Bloodbornes ost might be the greatest soundtrack of all time.
Artorias the Abysswalker what? Like except the appearance it has nothing to do with the cleric, as all of the moves are slightly different due to its damaged legs ( most of the attacks it lunges, and then is vulnerable when it tries to get up)
@@bigwheelfromspidamahn1037 I was under the impression that since Laurence was the first Vicar (and everyone that served under him would be the clerics), that Vicar and cleric alike had a similar appearance and body structure. Granted, this doesn't really work when taking Vicar Amelia into account.
3:41 is one of, if not the best section of any video game song I've ever heard in my entire life. It's unfortunate I rarely hear it in-game cause it takes forever to kick in and the final phase of Laurence can go really quickly if you're aggressive enough.
+Rasputin The Savior Good religion? I'm sorry but no. He knew from the jump that the Old Blood was something to be feared. Swore to Willem that he would continue to fear it. And then starting passing it out like it was candy. Used Old Yharnam as an experiment site in hopes he could find a way to get past the Beasthood problem and then when it fell through he burned the town down. The beastly scourge continued to Central Yharnam and he closed the city off from Cathedral Ward. He kidnapped orphans and forced them to train in the arcane until they turned into the Celestial Hosts and the Celestial Emissary. He did all of this until he became blood addled himself, fell to the Hunter's Nightmare because of his contributions to ransacking the Fishing Hamlet, and finally turned into a Cleric Beast forced to burn nonstop for the remainder of his life. Because he was an arrogant man who messed with things far beyond his understanding and ruined the lives of everyone in Yharnam.
+elevate07 Dude, I know he was being sarcastic. Trust me, he doesn't give a damn about Laurence. Also, I disagree with many points you made, about Laurence and other things. The Powder Keg Hunters had their own agenda in burning down Old Yharnam. It may or may not have been at the behest of Laurence, however, that blood is on the Powder Kegs, Gods bless their souls. Different personalities deal with fear in somtimes outlandish ways. I believe Laurence did, indeed, fear the old blood just as he said he would. However, his fear was too much for him. He became threatened by his fear, thus he chose to face it and bring from it what he could. His experiments were cruel, there is no denying that. Fear will make man do horrid things, but, without fear, we become beasts ourselves. He eventually emraced the beast within, unable to cope with his fear.
Marshall Carpenter Except we see from the Healing Church his disregard for the dangers of Old Blood or at the least the fact that he didn't pass that fear down to his followers. One good bit of evidence of this is the Blood Saints. So you know the Old Blood is something to be feared and you idea of fearing it is to modify the bodies of the nuns who work for you so that they can produce Old Blood on their own and pass it out. There's also the blood vials which I guess are diluted versions of Old Blood but we can see from the Hunters that it still is completely capable of addling and mutating the people who use it. There's also Vicar Amelia's prayer in which she says to "seek the Old Blood" so that they could partake in "communion." What? I could see if Laurence thought the Old Blood was necessary for ascension to Great One status and so he did controlled experiments in isolated areas but he passed it out to all of Yharnam. Considering what he knows, or should know, about Old Blood that is completely insane. What's more the Hunters that actually executed the Church's order to burn down expressed apprehension in doing it which is why you find the note saying "is our only choice to burn it down?" So yes Laurence is even if his intentions were right. He played a very dangerous game and all of Yharnam paid for it.
+elevate07 He was willing to do anything to conquer his fear. This most likely led to his followers getting the wrong message. They saw gallantry and heroics where there were none. He continued his pursuit of the arcane as evidenced by the research hall. Many despicable things happened there, but it was all in the name of overcoming his greatest fear, the old blood, more specifically what he did not know about it. If he could have recieved the insight and guidance he wanted from the great ones, then he would have been freed from his fear. His intentions were questionable, but he did bring ruin upon that which he started. Blood vials are a different matter entirely. The only hunters that turn into actual beasts were all associated with the Healing Church institution in some way. Gascoigne, the Yharnamite hunters, the Yahar'gul hunters, Ludwig and his hunters, the Choir- -all consumed the old blood from the Church. Blood vials seem to do nothing but keep the user alive. The Powder Kegs were not necessarily working for the Church. They were their own institution; their own workshop. The one who questioned his actions I believe to be the hunter tied in the chair we get the charred hunter set from. He was most likely one of Djura's apprentices and died in his belief that these beasts were in fact people. This is also most likely the event that drove Djura to retire and leave the hunters to do their unsavory work.

I managed to translate most of the lyrics. However, I would like to remind that I still had to catch everything by ear; hence why I cannot guarantee they are absolutely correct, though I'm still quite confident. Add the fact that Latin is an obscure language as well as the fact that whoever composed this lyrics either knew a great deal about Latin, or, most likely, little to none, considering there are some rather awkward and obvious grammatical errors. That might also be the reason why they never officially released the lyrics. This is what I managed to catch myself after carefully listening to the theme once more: LATIN LYRICS: "Si filii sci te tibi vi sacramentum Erit praemium sanguine sanctum Erit praemium sanguine sanctum absconditum Vel venio humanitas tendo pendere Sanguine sanctu Honesta rete sanguine Expectare iste (should be istud) blasphemia Est vitae ita dissemino - unclear part - Honesta rete sanguine Expectare iste blasphemia A mysterio nostribus (should be nostris) Aqua vitae eo absolvis Dinotus Timere Dinotus Sanguine Timere Venenat scitis Festiva praestabile Sanguine sanctu Ita venite Iste (should be istud) vinum - unclear part -" REARRANGED LATIN LYRICS: "Filii sci te si sacramentum vi (excoles - this verb was implied when sacramenta were involved) Erit tibi sanctum praemium sanguine Erit (tibi) sanctum absconditum praemium sanguine Humanitas, venio vel tendo pendere (when tendere+inf, it means "aim at") Sanguine sanctu Honesta rete sanguine Expectare: iste (istud) est blasphemia Ita dissemino vitae - part unclear - Honesta rete sanguine Expectare: iste (should be istud) (est) blasphemia Eo absolvis aqua vitae a nostribus (nostris) mysterio Timere dinotus Dinotus sanguine Scitis timere venenat Praestabile festiva (erit) Sanguine sanctu Ita venite Iste (should be istud) vinum - part unclear -" TRANSLATED LYRICS: "Oh child, know that if you will abide with great commitment by the sacred rite You will be blessed through the blood with a holy reward You will be blessed through the blood with the holy reward that was hidden away Oh mankind, I (now) find myself depending on the holy blood, (but) this was my goal. Laurence, and his battle theme, have always fascinated me: it's been a fun and compelling work.
This track (and many others in Fromsoft games) is still one of the best pieces written for any media. The composers should absolutely be proud of it and be praised for their work at the same level as Hans Zimmer, Howard Shore, etc.
This is actually possibly my favorite soulsborne theme. It captures absolutely everything about the game and wraps it up into one of the most terrifying, emotional tracks I've ever heard on an ost. AND IM NOT EVEN THAT FAMILIAR WITH THE LORE :D
+Josiah York If you know the lore about Laurence, this theme embodies his regret and rage perfectly, I think. This theme has an air of darkness, rage and sadness that reminds me of what the word Hell really means. That is what the Hunter's Nightmare is to the Old Hunters, after all.
+Josiah York Yeah. Bloodborne is my least favorite of all the "Souls" games, but Laurence is by far my favorite boss across the entire franchise. One of my biggest problems was that the bosses had awesome mechanics and cool themes and phases, but were too easy. The DLC fixed that. All the awesomeness of the other Bloodborne bosses, but with a challenging difficulty. And Laurence was the pinnacle of it all. DKS3 is going to be amazing if it can match this DLC.
+Emanuel bonilla imo this was the worst boss in the series, seriously cheap as fuck. only boss to this day I refuse to fight simply due to how unfun and cheap he is to fight, next to the 4 kings who are sadly mandatory(this theme is awesome though). Plus Yui did'nt did'nt rehash the asylum demon 3 times ;)...on that note, what is with miyazaki's obsession with taking his first bosses, covering them in gasoline and setting them on fire later on in the game XD.
"We're gonna open a jar, easy! Now you try! First get a jar" **Pulls out a legendary sword** "Patrick, that's The Ashbringer" "Yes" **Half a video later** 3:03
How can people not love this game. The amount of work FromSoft put into each aspect of the game is astonishing. It had one of the most unique stories, deep lore, amazing soundtrack, fluid game mechanics and amazing atmosphere i have ever seen in a video game. And the fact the i am still loving this game and discovering new things even after spending more than 300+ hours in this game says a lot.
The Hunter’s Nightmare is such a fitting title, since everything that happens in it is the “worst case scenario” for each respective boss. For Ludwig, he lost his mind and became a vicious beast. For Lady Maria, she was forced to guard the Fishing Hamlet in an effort to prevent hunters from committing the atrocities that caused much of the Night to occur. Also, she had to use the power of the Vilebloods even though she despised it. For Laurence; not only has he become a beast, but all of those he wished to aid with the ancient blood became horrid beasts that were lost to instinct. And finally Gehrman, a man who was separated from the one he loved. He carved a doll of her, gave it life and a duty, and swore to tie himself to the Hunters’ Dream. He waits in the Dream, taking it upon himself to slay hunters (in one of the best goddamn boss fights) so they may leave the Nightmare that he aided in designing. God DAMN this game is so good.
I fought him the last 2 days with summons and every time I instantly died when Phase two started. Now I didn't had any insights left so I tried it without. I failed at phase one for around an hour but then instantly first tried phase to. I should've seen coming that he isn't that strong on his right site...
The man that started it all with the beasts and the conflicts. Maybe the reason he's on fire is because he's doomed to suffer for eternity for what he did.
Mynameismegalex That's my problem with it too. Is everything in the nightmare even real? I think even if they aren't exact reality, they have some relationship to what actually occurs, so Laurence being on fire has some significant symbolism.
+HiddenWen You know, I just read your original comment again, and I noticed you said he started it all with the *beasts*, which is not true. The Beast Plague (if that's what you're talking about) is not related to Laurence or Yharnam for that matter.
+Mynameismegalex I thought the plague started with the ancient pthumerians who built the network of catacombs and labyrinths underneath Yharnam and kept the old blood there. Then Byrgenwerth led an expedition down there with Lawrence as one of them, down there they discovered the old blood and brought it up with them. After experimentation it was found to be a "miracle cure" and then Lawrence left Byrgenwerth and created the healing church. unless i got the backstory horribly, horribly wrong doesn't that mean he is inadvertently responsible for the entire situation in Yharnam?
Willem had a theory, that humanity needed "eyes on the inside" to elevate itself to the same plane as Great Ones. His school found the simple Fishing Hamlet and Kos within. They dissected her, likely killing the infant she was pregnant with. It was a horrific act, but it did get results... for Rom. She probably ate Great One flesh like the Player Character has to do to fight the Moon Prescence. When he saw what became of Rom, Willem had her tossed into the lake and urged his students to abandon this line of research. Perhaps this is what lead to the discovery that Great One blood has healing properties, and thus the creation of the Healing Church. Laurence found a miracle cure for any ailment, and just wanted to help his fellow man.
its still insane to me how well bloodborne's ost embodies ancient tragedy and absolute carnage. not a single track is wasted and the one reuse in the case of this song is a complete remix calling back to the first beast fight in the game
I didn´t even notice the boss had a OST. Couldn´t comprehend it over the PERPETUAL, EAR-RAPING SCREECHES of the 20 foot WEREWOLF MONSTER, that also happened to be *on fucking fire*
I love the bit at 3:03. The way it starts out all sentimental and pure, then grows gradually stronger, gradually darker, gradually more an undertone to the mounting chords, until it's almost unrecognizable. A very nice audio metaphor for the road to hell.
Yea. While Ludwig's gets you heated up and determined, Laurence's makes you feel sympathy and sorrow, making you want to put an end to his pitiful degeneration, which imo, is alot more personal.
I haven't even played the DLC yet, but I saw something cleric - beastly in the trailer. When I heard this soundtrack, I knew whose it was... The cleric beast's theme is my favourite from the main game
Wow... What a great theme. That stressful still bittersweet at time cello theme mixed with the almost always present choire which tone change with great timing along with the other instruments and the sweet and dark organ melody in the back... Perfect. Probably my most favorite of the entire game. Big thank you to you for the clear version and a bigger for the compositers.
Laurence, the first Vicar organ arrangement, that's what I play in my local church, and everytime everyone turns into beasts, so much fun! I thank Antonius Tertius for the organ arrangement!
I wonder if Laurence was killed by being burned to death, which is why he's on fire when you fight him. Most likely since you see that happening all over Yarnham.
He probably felt the scourge take over him bit by bit and knew what had to be done. So he did it. Either that or the nightmare is giving him poetic justice for his foolish actions and overuse of the blood, which led to the burning of Old Yharnam.
i just realized. there was a note in lecture building: "master willem was right, evolution without courage will be the ruin of our race", now i feel like laurence wrote it. because just on the same floor we find another note: "the nameless moon presence beckoned by laurence and his associates. paleblood." and then another one, in the same room: "three third cords", it all makes sense now. he did it all on purpose, he knew what was coming, but he still continued, he wanted to find the cure and save people in yharnam. but at what cost... this game is so dark lmao
2:40 to 4:08 is definitely my favourite part. I feel it matches the final part of the fight perfectly with Laurence being horrifically injured and is struggling to keep up the fight, but won't give up. I always saw this fight as a mercy killing more than anything else.
The game itself is a freaking brilliant masterpiece, however when a game adds a whole orchestra just to make the original soundtrack for it. That's when you know that shit gets real badass. Props to everyone involved in this game and also for the musicians that spends years to mastering their instruments ❤️
I see this common misunderstanding of "Lawrence was a fool, Willem told him the old blood would be the downfall of mankind." The thing many fellow moonlit hunters forget, is that Lawrence wasn't using old blood initially with the prospect of advancing evolution or anything. Lawrence was responsible for blood healing, and the healing church. He was driven to the drastic choice of giving out old blood to lower Yharnam (Old Yharnam) because they were being afflicted with ashen blood illness. Lawrence used the old blood to remedy the poisonous plague that was consuming Old Yharnam, and since the Great One blood was so potent, it seemingly healed them. Lawrence had no clue of the old bloods true side effects until after he had used it on Yharnam citizens, and presumably himself. He's as much of a tragic figure as Ludwig, both blinded by the results of their immediate actions (Following the thread of light or administering old blood.) Lets be honest, if your blind, almost vegetable mentor advised you to not use the one available remedy to successfully heal the sickly, poison spewing citizens you were employed to protect, you might go behind his back too. He was also a close friend of Gerhman, and surely if he hadn't been consumed by beasthood, he would've tried to return to the dream, and attempted to save his good friend from his eternal prison. He was a homie as long as he could stay human, his only goal was saving as many lives as possible, something Willem probably never cared about, considering his eye-lined brain was focused on hunts and the wicked evolution of mankind he was able to see with his new "eyes". Lawrence is the insert of us within the healing church. Most any of us, given the choice to save thousands, or do nothing would choose to save lower Yharnam just like Lawrence, sorry for long post! But had to put some respect on the boys name. To sum up Willem, if everyone at the time before the hunt and evolution was running towards a cliff, he was looked at as odd for running away from the cliff. He was looked at as the true fool at the time, why wouldn't the church save lives, possibly gather more hunters for the upcoming siege of beasts? Their both fools in the end, Willem so drastically wanted to save Yharnam with the wisdom and findings of Byrgenwerth, he gave up his ability to physically save it for an elevated mind. Lawrence on the other hand so drastically wanted to have the strength to save Yharnam citizens, and he earned it, only as recompense, his strength meant nothing as he was blinded by the scourge of beasts he contracted, seeing Yharnamnites as the beasts instead. Honestly, I was gonna leave a TLDR, but this info is worth reading! If your still shaky on why certain bloodborne figures did as they did, hopefully this post helps!
In the end though, "Foolish" wouldn't describe any of them. All of them were misguided, even Lawrence. Take a look at the adage again. "We are born of the blood, made men by the blood, and undone by the blood." Willems adage is less of a guide, and more like an accurate prediction. Without old blood, we wouldn't be able to defeat Gerhman, replace the moon presence and end the hunt. Without all old hunters mistakes and misguidance, the hunt, this TERRIBLE dream, would never reach an end. Hunters needed to be "made men by the blood" as false as the statement is, to truly put an end to the hunt.

"You fool. Don't you understand? No one wishes to go on…"
I said maybe for a reason. He makes good points despite being a malicious sentient blob. He wasn't the greatest evil in the game, nor was the old one. The true villain was the monumental.
+Nat Grant-Haysey
Elaborate?
Claiming it is evil is like claiming a lion is evil for eating Gazelles
As for Allant i think he just went insane seeing the inevitability that the old one would destroy all his psyche just shattered and he become nihilistic.
I dont even think Mephistopheles was evil, he was just trying to keep the soul arts a secret.

@@mommyslilstinker fear the old kush. By god, fear it, Laurence.
The latter makes more sense from certain perspective:
Laurence was the one who enraged kos the most (for example he could be the one delivering the death blow to orphan or be in charge of the hunter's group who invaded the hamlet)
and as ultimate punishment he was granted the fiery blood which would put him in constant state of agony for all the eternity given the fact that he's stuck in hunter's nightmare forever,
quite fitting metaphor of "burning in hell".
Mauelo with the bosses they’re usually the same as they were in life when they died. i assume he turned into a cleric beast and was put down by being burned to death as fire is how all the yharnamites killed beasts
Mauelo but also there’s no reason he’d still be in agonizing pain constantly burning in the “afterlife” so then it also ties in with kos’s punishment

That actually isn't dumb at all, i never actually thought of it like that
not dumb at all, just how I see it. because its precisely what happened.
N Crimson
That's actually a proper analogy. Laurence threw caution into the wind, ruining his life and countless others. Yharnam is a cursed place because of his careless greed. Such a fascinating character.
I just adore how this is a much more sinister, “final” sounding version of the cleric beast motif. The composers of this game are just so clever. I wish more music schools would focus on video game soundtracks.
They really came through with a lot of wagnerian influence when composing the OST for Bloodborne. I would say half Wagner and half Handel.

Basically, be more insightful. But honestly Williem did worst things. FAR worse things than Laurence.
I'd say what Willem did was more cold-hearted and morally corrupt, but Laurence caused more misery.

Laurence, a man too pig-headed for his own good, just wanted to help people, but he messed with crap not meant to be messed with, and became a beast that in my eyes is almost reminiscent of Sif, you injure his legs and he falls over before eventually falling off completely, I felt like I was putting a rabid dog out of its misery more than anything( not to say Sif was a rabid dog mind you)
Gehrman, who was there since the beginning, taking the burden to be bound to the dream upon himself, killing hunters so they wouldn't have to suffer as he does.
+Aknaught92 Well said!

Can't beat Maiden Astraea for me. When she killed herself after I beat Garl Vinland I felt like the lowest scum of the Earth.

@@KaptainKommissar i'm hoping for it
god damn that almost made me cry, maybe its just because i know the story and can kind of understand the emotion the song is trying to convey, but god DAMN this is one of the best scores i have ever heard. its just exactly the sort of vibe bloodborne is built on, total fear, cosmic horror, mystery, and tragedy. and this theme in particular really conveys the tragedy of laurence, the total replacement of his consciousness with beasthood, while still conveying the immense power of the beast you're tasked with destroying. it's utterly perfect

Same. I like to think he is the true final boss of the game, just because of his overall importance to the story.
Laurence did orchestrate the story and events in Bloodborne.

Poor Laurence. Created such a good religion in Yharnam.
What's more the Hunters that actually executed the Church's order to burn down expressed apprehension in doing it which is why you find the note saying "is our only choice to burn it down?"
So yes Laurence is even if his intentions were right.
Laurence: "It's alright man, I can handle this!"
Narrator:"Laurence couldn't handle it. Infact he made an absolute fool out of himself."

Add the fact that Latin is an obscure language as well as the fact that whoever composed this lyrics either knew a great deal about Latin, or, most likely, little to none, considering there are some rather awkward and obvious grammatical errors. This track (and many others in Fromsoft games) is still one of the best pieces written for any media. The composers should absolutely be proud of it and be praised for their work at the same level as Hans Zimmer, Howard Shore, etc.
This and Ludwig’s theme deserve to be recognized. They are genuine masterpieces.
This is actually possibly my favorite soulsborne theme. It captures absolutely everything about the game and wraps it up into one of the most terrifying, emotional tracks I've ever heard on an ost. AND IM NOT EVEN THAT FAMILIAR WITH THE LORE :D
+Josiah York You Really Should Research the Lore. It's Amazing!!!
+Josiah York If you know the lore about Laurence, this theme embodies his regret and rage perfectly, I think. This theme has an air of darkness, rage and sadness that reminds me of what the word Hell really means. That is what the Hunter's Nightmare is to the Old Hunters, after all.
+Josiah York the second part of the song matches up with the boss phase perfectly, sounds so desperate and epic.
Bloodborne isn't a souls game.

It's funny how a boss becomes harder AFTER they lose half of there body parts.
Rasend0ri it's easier if you can wait. Just 1-2 hit him when he split his lava blood then saw him crawling on the ground like a poorman going to die.
Strange, i found him easier in phase 2 because you can just hit him when hes crawling or spewing lava from his mouth
+HiddenWen Or maybe it's just because it's a nightmare?
+HiddenWen And a completely-nonsenscial-obviously-not-entirely-related-to-the-real-world kind of nightmare, not *just* a different dimension.
Theres a dark almost regal feel to this track. A high ranking elite individual who has lost himself to the very thing he once vowed to refrain from.
Couldn´t comprehend it over the PERPETUAL, EAR-RAPING SCREECHES of the 20 foot WEREWOLF MONSTER, that also happened to be *on fucking fire*
music >>> up other sounds
I love the bit at 3:03. The way it starts out all sentimental and pure, then grows gradually stronger, gradually darker, gradually more an undertone to the mounting chords, until it's almost unrecognizable. A very nice audio metaphor for the road to hell.
Temprael i’m late as fuck but that minute perfectly describes laurences story
Its better than Ludwigs in my opinion. Hell, it just might be the best in all the series, the buildup and the climax of the song is godlike.
Yea. While Ludwig's gets you heated up and determined, Laurence's makes you feel sympathy and sorrow, making you want to put an end to his pitiful degeneration, which imo, is alot more personal.
Cant we just agree that they're both incredible in their own way? I cant for the life of me pick between Ludwig and Laurence's ost
Every single song in the dlc is phenomenal. It made me turn the music up to 10 and lower everything else in settings
7:54 - Theme of Patrick becoming the Ashbringer.
I like how it's similar to cleric beast's theme
I haven't even played the DLC yet, but I saw something cleric - beastly in the trailer. When I heard this soundtrack, I knew whose it was... The cleric beast's theme is my favourite from the main game

I wonder if Laurence was killed by being burned to death, which is why he's on fire when you fight him. Most likely since you see that happening all over Yarnham.
Wayfarin Stranger dude, I sometimes wonder if he had tried to purge himself by fire. By Blood, now that'd be disturbing. Despair and torment.
@@georgreminik3302 In his failure, and his duty. to purge both the beast and the man by fire, to undo what can't be undone. oh laurence.
He probably felt the scourge take over him bit by bit and knew what had to be done. So he did it.
Either that or the nightmare is giving him poetic justice for his foolish actions and overuse of the blood, which led to the burning of Old Yharnam.
Didn't Brador cracked his skull when he turned?
this is so fuckin underrated, ludwig's theme gets comments literally every day, this one barely does
"YA'LL DONE FUCKED UP"

I love you Laurence. Definitely my favorite FromSoft character. Rest In Peace. I’m sure it was agonizing but you were everything . You were all of it.
Only in Bloodborne could a boss lose his legs and become stronger

Best song in this game and out of any of the Souls games, period. Definitely one of my all-time favorite game tracks ever.
i just realized. there was a note in lecture building: "master willem was right, evolution without courage will be the ruin of our race", now i feel like laurence wrote it. because just on the same floor we find another note: "the nameless moon presence beckoned by laurence and his associates. paleblood." and then another one, in the same room: "three third cords", it all makes sense now. he did it all on purpose, he knew what was coming, but he still continued, he wanted to find the cure and save people in yharnam. but at what cost... this game is so dark lmao
dark souls 3 dlc has some big shoes to fill
I don't think they're going to fuck around with the final dark souls content they will ever make
+dydp1 Triplet Dragonriders!
***** nah,its going to be the royal rat authority fight except this time there are four times as many rats
+dydp1 Or the Yellow Smelter Demon with twice the delay in hits.
***** nah nah, they make a boss like flexile sentry but its two smelter demons... that sounds terrifying
Anyone else still listening to this underrated masterpiece?
underrated? really? lol i love so much this fucking ost
I wouldn't really call it underated.
Yup

Bloodborne is one of the greatest games OF ALL TIME. It's an artistic masterpiece.
This is the best orchestral song I've ever heard in my life. Holy God...
2:40 to 4:08 is definitely my favourite part. I feel it matches the final part of the fight perfectly with Laurence being horrifically injured and is struggling to keep up the fight, but won't give up. I always saw this fight as a mercy killing more than anything else.
" I will not forget our adage. "
- Laurence, the First Vicar
Does no one want to talk about this beautiful section with the organs? 0:49-1:27 Goosebumps everytime!
overwhelming chills ikr? reminds me of deacons of the deep's ost
The game itself is a freaking brilliant masterpiece, however when a game adds a whole orchestra just to make the original soundtrack for it. That's when you know that shit gets real badass. Props to everyone involved in this game and also for the musicians that spends years to mastering their instruments ❤️
I see this common misunderstanding of "Lawrence was a fool, Willem told him the old blood would be the downfall of mankind."
The thing many fellow moonlit hunters forget, is that Lawrence wasn't using old blood initially with the prospect of advancing evolution or anything.
Lawrence was responsible for blood
healing, and the healing church.
He's as much of a tragic figure as Ludwig, both blinded by the results of their immediate actions (Following the thread of light or administering old blood.)
Lets be honest, if your blind, almost vegetable mentor advised you to not use the one available remedy to successfully heal the sickly, poison spewing citizens you were employed to protect, you might go behind his back too.
"We are born of the blood, made men by the blood, and undone by the blood."
Willems adage is less of a guide, and more like an accurate prediction.
Every character in Bloodborne is tragic.
Hearing this Clean Version Makes Me Feel Like Laurence has Found His Skull and Restored His Memories. =,)
