  • On this day I took my new Nikkor 40mm f/2 SE lens out in Tokyo on a rainy day to do some test shooting in the street. The area I went to was was around Idabashi station, and I ended up exploring the back streets of Kagurazaka, or "The Paris of Tokyo" as some people call it.
    The lens worked great and even though I got super wet it was great fun to finally get out and shoot in the rain in Tokyo.

    I bought my 40mm on black Friday last year. I bought it for street photography. I just started doing street photography last year. I don't have the 35mm, 50mm, or 85mm so i don't have those to compare it to buy the 40mm is a really sharp lens. And it has a really shallow depth of field at the minimum focus distance. You can almost use it as a macro lens. I do have the 105mm macro but i haven't used it for portraits yet. Only bugs, leaves and flowers. I did try the 85mm f/1.8 in a camera store. One of the guys they're modeled for me. I really like it too. It's on my list of lenses to buy but I'm waiting for the 200-600mm to come out any time now.

      Happy to hear the lens is working out for you. Inhavnt tried getting so close to a macro shot with mine but maybe I'll try that the next time I'm out. The 85/1.8 is super as well in my opinion and I use mine alllll the time.

      @@jasonhalaykophotography I was using mine near a rock wall shooting down it. I still had it on f/2. I noticed how small of an area of the rock was in focus. Of course I had to take a shot or two. It might have been 3 or 4 inches of that in focus. It's not a true macro lens but I was impressed with the shallow depth of field it has up close. I just can't get over how sharp it is yet the definition is so good. I can wait to swap out my 24-70mm and 70-200mm for the Nikon Z lenses. Another great thing about Nikon z lenses is that there's little or no focus breathing or chromatic aberration. That's great for focus stacking landscape shots. Everything lines up great in Photoshop.

    Amazing pictures, exactly my type of street photography. very intimate but never obtrusive. I couldn't help but wonder how you were focusing most of the shots. I think I noticed it @2:50 that you manually put your AF-C Wide Area S where you expect your subject to be in focus and just actuate the shutter. Is that your main method or do you sometimes pre-focus and release when you have the frame you were looking for?You don't seem to be using either BBF or focus/recompose, right? Cheers

    • @jasonhalaykophotography
      @jasonhalaykophotography  Год назад

      Thanks!! Happy to hear you like my style of street photography.
      I guess I use two types of focusing when shooting. 1. I tend to move the focus area around as needed rather than focus/recompose. This is because if my subject is moving while I focus/recompose they might move out of my focus area before I take a shot. As I almost always shoot wide open, this can happen quite quickly. So best to consider my composition, move the focus point, and then let the AF-C do its thing.
      OR, if I know the composition I want and am just waiting for someone interesting to come by, I will set up a “focus trap” where I pre-focus where I want them to be and then blast a bunch a photos as they go through.
      For me, composition is important, so these methods keep me from not just spraying and praying as they say.
      Hope that helps!

    The Z5 + the regular Nikkor 40mm f2 = such a great value from Nikon. Really, the best deal in cameras, at least in the USA when the Z5 is $400 off. For portraits, the Z50mm f1.8s is very nice indeed, though a bit more to carry on the street and long in the nose. Both are great in their own way. For the street, all widths work fine, though you are getting up rather close with a 28mm. The fifty is natural for composition and geometry, with no distortions. The use of 40mm, I find pretty close to the 50mm. If carrying with only a wrist strap, the 40mm has the advantage, at least past the hour of shooting, whereas the 50mm one might begin to feel weight. The focused area, for many people is around 40mm or 43mm focal length, with the rest being more peripheral view, as in survival mode -- in the wild an animal, and in the urban jungle, the bus coming towards you!

If you want to take pictures of animals and wildlife though I would recommend a zoom lens of some kind for sure. With the 40mm (more zoomed with the DX crop of the Z5) you might not get as close as you like. Looks like there is a decent DX 50-250 that comes as a bundle. That and a 40mm for street or landscape and you should be good to go.
