Hello and welcome to my channel. On this channel I will share my photographic adventures, give gear reviews, and upload whatever I feel may help aspiring photographers . Please feel free to leave any questions or comments you may have as I always love communicating with other photographers and creatives about my passions of photography and action sports.
pocket dispo, is it worth it?
So I saw the pocket dispo on my Instagram feed and thought it could be a fun way to get the nostalgic vibe of old disposable film cameras from back when I first started photography. It was super easy to use, but didn't really give the full results I expected when taking pictures, but seems a little more interesting to me for video in the future. Check out the video for my full thoughts along with many examples of both photos and videos I took with the pocket dispo lens.

ASAKUSA at NIGHT with the Nikon Zf

I had some extra time after a Red Bull shoot in Tokyo so I went for a little walk from my hotel up through Asakusa to Senso-ji Temple. The POV video was shot with the new 4k mini GoPro, please let me know what you think! My personal photography website: www.jason-halayko.com Thank...

Personally I would LOVE a z mount 105 f/1.8 or f/2. Two of my fave F mount lenses are the 105 f/2.0 DC and my 105 f/2.5 AI-S. The 105 f/1.4 nice but big and heavy to carry as part of a 3 prime kit. f/1.8 or f/2.0 is the the sweet spot between size weight and max aperture for 20mm-105mm full frame primes imo. I would also love to see a small and light Z mount 180mm f/2.8 S prime too but I know that is probably a pipe dream lol.
All great lenses! Thanks for the comment!
I own the 85mm 1.8 , I can always rent the 1.2 if I really need it .
yup, what I have been doing with a couple different lenses these days.
I use a x20 had since 2014 great as the x10 👌😎☕️
@@FredWilbury nice to hear it lasts so long!!
in my opinion sharpness isnt everything ... they both look flat and lifeless lets say compared to the 50mm 1.8s or even the 70-200mm 2.8s still no z lens 85mm beats the f 85mm 1.4g visually or the 105 1.4ed ruclips.net/video/fJqTiHjc63E/видео.html this reviews it against the 50mm 1.8 S the rendering dif is night and day
Question: How do you mount to Zf, just the FTZ adapter?
@@babyboy1971 yup, super easy.
I need this lens. So far, for my Zf, I have the 40f2, 50 1.8S and 85 1.8S. I want to round out my kit. Would you recommend this lens? BTW, check out Gary Winogrand’s work. He was a master street photographer and used the 28mm focal length almost exclusively.
For it's size and price it's a great little lens for sure!

@@lukakoprivica thanks!! I hope you enjoy getting back with Nikon! Lots of great gear waiting for you.
Very nice work and enjoyed. Next year me and my wife are planning to visit Japan and will take my X10 instead of my Nikon D700. The fuji is so little you forget you are holding it. Cheers

To be honest I don't mind it much myself either, haha. Thanks for he comment!
final photo is raw or changed in post-production? I'm honestly on the fence - buy Fuji X10 or do photos wiith smartphone Samsung S24 Ultra
All my photos with the X10 are shot in RAW and edited later on my computer. The X10 is so old it dose not have many good film simulators like the X100V. Hope that helps, and good luck!
Actually the 135 is significantly more comfortable to use on z6iii as 105 you have to use ftz adapter and the 105 feels more front heavy. I tried the 135 and it felt way lighter and easier to hold.
If that works for you thats amazing. I think shooting on the smaller body of the z6iii that you would find that, but in my video I was shooting with the larger Z9. So that is an interesting difference some people might find depending on their camera body size. Thanks for sharing!
what is the file size?
Uncompressed Raw files come in around 200MB, compressed are about 150MB, and JPGs range from 20-50MB depending on the scene.
Beautiful shots, would love to come to this spot one day. Btw can you share what app did you use to check the time of the train? Thanks alot!
@@thinhdang4123 thanks for the nice comment!! The app I used then was NaviTime, it’s really good but in Japanese. I think just using Google maps for train times is very good, and available in English as well. Good luck!!

Oh my, these look so good. Thinking about getting the ZF with that lens. But I own already a Sony with a GM 35mm.
@@g33k3301 that’s a hard decision for sure. I’m super happy I have my Zf because it has become my go to street camera. But switching brands can be very intimidating. Good luck!
@ It is, indeed! I think I would add it and have the Zf like my Leica M I used to own. More like a „fun cam“ with a character lens for moments with my family and friends. Let‘s see! Thanks for the video, looking forward to new ones, especially with that lens. Because you‘re one of the few ones that can take actually pleasing shots.
@ thanks a ton, especially for your last comment. Brought a very big smile to my face 🥰
Bro's doing street photography with a Z9... 🥹 I feel myself to be obtrusive and attention-grabbing with a Z6. 🥲
@@PhotographerSen you have to do what you can with what you got. Use my Zf for street shooting now and it much more comfortable than the Z9 which is more my work camera.
I think the video clips look really cool !
@@stewartmunrovideo thanks!! I’m actually probably going to use it for b-roll on an upcoming shoot for video. Should be fun.
Thanks for the comprehensive review! I always like how you talk about the gear you review in real world situations, feel and not just specs that so many others do on RUclips. I’ve been seeing this lens on my instagram ads but wasn’t sure. Your review has helped me make that decision. Appreciate it!
@@Sooch900 thanks!! Just trying to convey the same information I would like to know. I personally dislike a lot of the bigger photography channels because all they talk about is specs, but never show any pictures taken with the gear, and if they do show any they are not actually all that good…
@@jasonhalaykophotography you can see when a product gets launched, all the big RUclipsrs throw out their review videos real quick or day of even. 95% of them will be all positive, but then you get a couple of honest reviews that also talk about the cons of said gear…then you know who you can trust.
@@jasonhalaykophotographythat’s what makes me appreciate people such as yourself!
Worth it?meh...but for fun sure...u taking some really nice photo wit it..that for sure
Thanks! Happy to hear you like the photos I got with it at least.
I love your style of photography! Looking at getting this lens for my Z6. Going to Germany in December and want a walk around native prime. Been also looking at the 40mm but the 28 would probably give more shooting options.
@@juliegarner2273 thanks!! Your comment has made my day! The 35mm 1.4 is a nice lens in between those. Been using it for street and work and enjoy it a lot! I have a video with it as well if you are interested.
Any challeneges with hasselblad's electronic shutter? Think it would work for street?
@@OngWeeKiat I personally had no issues with it during our portrait session and I did do a little bit of street shooting as well and that was fine too. It's a big investment so maybe renting one for a few days and seeing if it matches your style would be a good idea. Good luck and thanks for checking out the video!!

No, I shoot in RAW and edit in post.

The 105mm f/1..4 in combination with the FTZ II adapter is both heavier and longer than the Plena.
Probably, but that alone doesn't mean I will replace my 105 just yet...
What lenses were you using?

Another great video, Jason. I always look forward to your BTS shoots. You did an amazing job shooting in low light without ancillary lighting. One question about the Zf since I don’t own one: How did you get the white circle to appear in the centre of the screen and what is its purpose? I don’t think I have it on my Z7ii.

Interesting review. I can guarantee that there’s a firmware update available since the lens I received was DOA and I was told to upgrade the firmware. Since I own a Mac and the firmware update only works with Microsoft based computers, I returned the lens (still awaiting my refund). You’d be best to buy a generic Z back cap and keep the one with the USB port at home for updates.
Good info, and good idea about the lens cap. Just double checked the website and noticed it says "Must be upgraded with Windows system" so thats kinda a bummer for me and every Mac user...
@@jasonhalaykophotography The issue for me is that they shipped a lens that needed to be upgraded to actually work on a Nikon.
@ mine worked straight out of the box with no issues on my Zf and Z9 so not sure why there would be a problem.
@ Mine did not on my Z6iii, Z9, Z5 and Zfc. I don’t know why would have been a problem either. It’s a factory/quality control issue.
Can I still use and look through the EVF while mirroring the display on my iPhone? I want to use this with my Z6ii but kind of a deal breaker if I can’t do this
@@stevenc.4221 I’m out at a shoot without it this weekend but I’ll double check when I get home, pretty sure you can but let me double check for you.
@ I would greatly appreciate that! Best of luck with your shoot!
@ thanks!! Downhill mountain bike event for Red Bull, yea!!!
I’ve loved my canon 50mm f1.2 and got some of my best bokeh shots with it wide open. Surprisingly this Fuji 50mm f1.7 gives a very similar bokeh at f1.7 to the full frame f1.2. I love this lens on my gfx 100 ii. Have another 5 Fuji medium format lens and this one gets most of my time. At 44mm equivalent on full frame it’s a good focal length for a lot of what I do. It’s a bit noisy but it doesn’t bother me. Focus isn’t lighting quick like most lens on medium format but it’s decent. Really great lens.
Amazing!! Good to hear =)
Hi Jason, may I know what focal length you used for the photos in this video? Just found your channel and has been binge-watching the videos, great photos and calming videos!
@@Azra-z7c thanks a lot for checking out my channel and binge watching a bunch of videos. I think on this day I was mainly using my f Mount 105/1.4 lens on my Z9. Hope that helps!
@@jasonhalaykophotography Thank you!
Hey Jason! Did you enjoy this or 7Artisans 85mm more?
@@AlChered hard to say. I enjoyed both shoots a lot, and neither lens was a burden to getting the photos I wanted at all. Technically they were both fine, but as I say in this video, the 75mm feels a tad soft, but not so much that it’s any kind of problem.
Appreciate you film and taking photos out in the rain <3
@@bubbachua thank you! Would love to do it again, maybe now that fall is here I’ll get the chance soon.
Like the comparison with the Nikon 85 1.8, thank you for that. The Nikon seems a bit sharper and has more micro contrast. BUT you only see that when you have the pictures next to each other. On a stand alone basis the photos taken with the TT A look a tad soft( which does not have to be a negative) but absolutely sharp enough. I wish those kind of lenses would have been available when I started out. I don't think the TT A is dust and water resistant. So if you want to go out to shoot in more adverse environments it might pay off to go for the Nikon. Personally I am looking to get the 250 5.6 mirror lens and the 75 1.5 Biotar from TTA , nice budget friendly special effect lenses. TT A is doing a great job to offer compelling lenses at a very attractive price.
@@markusbuechter3766 thanks for the amazing comment! Not being dust or water proof is a good point, and as someone who shoots outdoors/on location a lot that's something to consider for sure! Those two sound interesting, I’ll check them out when I can. Cheers!!
A-7Artisans B-Nikon
75mm is quite a useful focal length for portraits in a more confined space, compared to 85mm, particularly when you want greater compression versus a 50mm. Interesting review Jason.
@@davids2720 For sure, each focal length have their pluses and minuses for sure. Thanks for checking out the video and for the comment as well!!
I have a 90/1.25 from TTA. With these lenses you're limited to electronic shutter (I'm on a CFV II 50 back). There is no leaf shutter, if that's important to you.
@@bitspacemusic thanks!! Good info for sure.
Based on the image quality I see, does it make sense for me to spend $950 CDN or $410 CDN? Definitely the $410. The only issue I would have is that aperture ring. I know that would drive me nuts.
@@michael007ish well this is something you will have to decided…hard question though. The aperture ring does tend to kill it a bit for me but if you are on a budget??? If possible try one out at your local shop and see what you think.
15 minutes into the video, and not a single mention to the price. This is not just "extra money". More into the video after seeing the examples, I think it is not worth the price difference. Yes, a professional should get it, but not me.
@@ReneGrothmann price is different for each country so not something I really mention in videos too often, plus a quick Google search will tell you the current prices in your area quickly. I do agree with you though and even though I am a professional I have not taken the plunge, still enjoying my 85mm 1.8.
Beautiful photos Jason! I picked up this lens as well but yet to use it in inclement weather. I've seen conflicting reports about its weather sealing. How have you found using it in the rain?
@@nickcarneyphotography thanks!! Happy to hear you liked the photos. When I was shooting I was being a little carful of the rain but wasn’t using a cover so it did get quite went, but no problems afterwards. Just made sure to wipe it off and take it out of my bag when I got home.

I just love the fall off of the 135 in your test. But both were beautiful but the 135 just had that wow factor. My quick test shooting non portraits the 135 was absolutely stunning and so sharp even wide open.
@@jerrym8140 super happy to hear!! If money wasn’t an issue I would pick one up tomorrow, but the 105 fills the need at the moment. Thanks for checking out the video!!
@@jasonhalaykophotography You’re welcome I enjoyed your video and I get it too. I have the 85mm 1.4G my favorite lens ever to date, until probably now. So I just can’t justify owning the 85mm 1.2 because of justifying the cost. Money not an issue hell yeah I would get the 85mm 1.2 as I’m now almost all converted to the Z mount which is nice for sure. The 135 has been a lens I have wanted for so so long, so in that respect, I am glad I didn’t own one yet which then led me to getting the lens I’m sure to use a lot and got a lens that is optically the best lens I think I will have ever used also based on everything I have heard or seen about this lens.
Great video and photos. I really want to get the ZF with the 28mm and Voigtlander 40mm. Wanted to get a x100vi, but I can get the ZF with the Voigtlander for about the same price or the ZF with the Nikon 28mm and 40mm for less than the x100vi. The prices they’re asking for the Fuji is pretty absurd at the moment. For video, how long does it take for the camera to get the overheat sign when shooting 4K?
@@ren1818ren ya, I like Fuji a lot but the prices are a little out of control for that series. I’m not sure how long it would take. I did a full hour of heavy shooting of video the other day and it didn’t overheat at all. Seems much better for that than other cameras out at the moment. Hope that helps!
