@Jon The Backpack Kid He normally allows a HM Slave/Slaves to be used in outside situations but he never uses them in battle. If that slave/One of the slaves was to enter the battle he counts that as a black out and he goes back to the last save he made. Normally says so in the beginning of all his challenges. Hope this clears up things a bit
Poison Sting didn't "miss." The damage it did was so low, that when the game calculated how much HP to deduct, the closest integer was 0 . The only time the game thinks you can do 0 damage is when you miss, so that is the text that appeared on screen. They fixed it in later gens by making sure that damage can never be 0 and it will be rounded to 1 HP if the calculated damage is below 1. Edit: Source: bulbapedia
Gen1 is fucking hilarious. An incredibly addicting RPG that became one of the most successful and popular media creations ever yet it's original entries are broken as hell.
Challenge idea: Beating a game with a team composed of only "gimmick" Pokemon, like Wobbuffet, or Shedinja. OR, doing a run where you create a team that's the worse type for each gym.
Whenever you get the chance, I think it could be interesting to see a full HM Pokemon team, a team full of classic HM throwaways like Bidoof, Goldeen, Machop, Wingul, etc, with nothing but HMs for attacks (Might be able to use something to alter your starter of choice to start the game with Cut or Rock Smash)
did no one notice at the start of 12:39, when mdb was showing omanyte, the surf music in the background broke and kept repeating itself in a certain point and i was like what. lol you got to content MDB. love it
Chris Biebel technically TMs aren’t learned naturally by any ‘mons (except a few like Kartana but that’s an ultra beast), if you were allowed to use the first 4 moves of any Pokémon, you could easily beat at least the 3rd gym for all the games (maybe not all but ehh same difference)
I've been going down the entire pokemon challenge playlist in the background while I'm playing Pokemon Blue for the millionth time and I just wanted to give you a shoutout for really making me laugh re: needing to use the fossil you chose because it's "good for the algorithm". Figured the least I could do is leave a comment this time. Thanks for the laugh!
I like that you explain why certain things work the way they do including between generations. Please keep that up! It’s cool to understand why these things happened when I was a kid and played these games.
Surely its really hard to get all 3, you dont get given any in that family so you'd have to get to mauville with 1 then breed the others then hope you get the right hitmon when you raise tyrogue
22:30 I don't have to tell anyone here how broken gen 1 is, but the reason dragonite isn't using damaging attacks is because the AI recognizes that the normal type hyper beam and take down are resisted by omanyte. Even though barrier and agility are just status moves the AI only checks to see if psychic type moves will be resisted or not, and since omanyte doesn't resist psychic, it uses those moves - even though its psychic moves won't do anything
SUGGESTION: Can you beat a randomised Pokémon game of your choice using only your random Starter and the first five Pokémon you encounter on the opening route as your team of six?
i love this idea. but make i harder for him with other rules. like use only 1 or 2 pokemon and your starter choice is made by a random number generator
MDB: I fell like I'm morally and legally obliged to use him I mean I have to; its good for the youtube algorithm Me: Laughs so loud the neighbors can hear it
2:45 That happens because gen 1 doesn't round all attacks that would deal a damage lower than 1 to 1, so the attack says it's missing, when it's actually dealing 0 damage, you got to hit one time because the attack was a crit
I think gen 1 AI generally just looks at type combinations but not the moves themselves. It's how the infamous Lorelei softlock (covered by Pikasprey) works, where the Dewgong spams rest against a fighting type opponent because its a psychic type move. Similarly, Dragonite was likely being discouraged from using moves from "ineffective types" so again used status moves that were of a different type.
@@jakerockznoodles There's 4 AI strategies, none of them look at the moves very much: Random - literally just picks a random move, because of a bug in how it picks moves if it has 3 moves the first move is picked about 50% of the time Bad - picks a random move that's type is able to damage you, slightly better than random but still awful Good - picks the move with the best type advantage, also uses healing items if the last move you used's damage would be able to finish the Pokémon, even if the Pokémon is fully healed already(because they switched for example) "Smart" - reserved for the final champion battle only, the AI picks moves/potions like from good, but the AI prefers moves with STAB as well as super effective. None of the AI strategies in gen 1 even consider the potential damage the attacks can deal, leading to constant rest spam or using curse to kill yourself, etc.

Lorelei's Dewgong is a strange case. In Gen 1, the game goes with whatever move is type advantaged over you, even if it's not a damaging move. There are a couple videos explaining a way to trap yourself in an infinite battle with her exploiting it, and in Yellow and Japanese Blue, they created a specific check if the Pokemon is Lorelei's Dewgong or not.

Fun fact: Electabuzz and Raichu are version exclusive encounters in the Power Plant. Electabuzz is found at level 32-34 in Red, and Raichu is found at level 32-34 in Blue.
Exp all is a different item though. Idk, I've always considered it to be different because of the difference mechanics. It is similar to the modern exp share though.
Cookie oh, true. the modern one you have to give to a specific pokemon to gain half the xp of the battle and the old one is a passive item that shares all xp with the entire team, right?
@@onetwothreefour3957 It splits the exp between your party but you receive less exp over all. Also, after each battle, it will give you a message for how much exp each pokemon received. Tbh, it was really painful getting 6 messages saying my pokemon earned, like 15 exp points, after every battle, so I boxed the exp all. Was just too annoying and not worth it imo. You got your wish, albeit Seedot tagged along
12:44 is is just me or is the music kinda hanging?
Also, Omastar looks like he's dancing and it's great
The very idea of this was so crazy. I loved every bit of this challenge. Thank you for another great time.
17:44 RHYHORN* great vids though man! These are my work drive entertainment.
I like your beard
5:30 the return of "It's good for the RUclips algorithm"
"he can use confusion and-"
(indus from epithet erased voice) BARRIER!!!!
Lol, love that
As for why Dragonite refused to attack Omastar, it's because he was afraid that he'd kill his own God.
Fun fact: Electabuzz and Raichu are version exclusive encounters in the Power Plant. Electabuzz is found at level 32-34 in Red, and Raichu is found at level 32-34 in Blue.
experience share does exist in pokemon red, i just remember having to have caught 20-30 pokemon to receive it first
I was just about to comment the same thing!
I'm so glad they changed the mechanics.
Cookie ah true again. totally forgot about that
Yay my uncle is in the thumbnail
Edit: thank you for choosing squirtle
When you comment here but not the live stream
Me: *Outstanding Move*
Love your commentary and personality :)
22:37 That Dragonite only had Hyper Beam as an attacking move, IIRC.
17:29 looks like they used a bit of Machop's sprite for omastar?
Video idea:
"Can i beat pokemon emerald using only HM's?"
tbh, early on may be a bit of a struggle but overall itd be super easy due to moves like surf and strength
15:53 - Did anybody else hear the sound effects in the background?
???
Pusheen 333 he normally exits out the sound effects but they were in during that battle for some reason
Idk why you showed up in my recommended as I don't watch that many Pokemon videos but now I've been binging all the challenges. Here's another comment for the algorithm.
Awesome playthrough man. I didn’t think you’d beat the elite 4 and champion with just level 50 Pokémon, that takes some skill and you even had some setbacks with them. You are a great Pokémon player indeed. :)
