  • Hi all! Today I'm tackling one of those common woes of us climbers that doesn't really get covered a bunch... And that's How To Take Care Of Your Climbing Shoes 101! It isn't too complicated, even if your shoes have seen multiple dusty outdoor trips :-)
    One thing I forgot to mention in the video (ugh!) is that some shoes do advertise themselves as being washing machine safe. I know my Oxygyms that I wore when I first started out were of the washing-machine-safe kind, but just remember not to throw your shoes in the dryer after you wash them!
    I hope everyone's week was great! It was pretty fun filming this one, playing the scientist role and going in with multiple variables before drawing conclusions about the experiment! Gotta love it!
    Did I miss something? Do you have a secret recipe for fresh shoes that's been passed down your alpinist family for generations? Is it peaches and onions (LMK if you got that reference...)
    Also LMK if you watched long enough for them super secret bloopers.

    2 or 3 things I like to add. ... The first one you already mentioned - Socks. I wear them since the very beginning of my climbing "live" ... So like 6 years. And it felt strange to me to be barefood in climbing shoes. Just like in normal shoes. It does not hinders me at all to clime 6c's even with tiny foodholds. So the sensitivity from my point of view is more limited to the thickness and softness of the rubber then to the fact wearing thin - yes quite thin cotton, or cotton-bamboo material - socks. ... Sidefact: you might not collect that much bacteria and even worse mycosis from other barefood walking climbers. ... Second thing ... Already mentioned ... I use from time to time alcohol, as you did it as well ... I think it is isoprop ... But the brand I prefer tu use is Sagrotan. At least well known here in the EU. It works for me very well ... Third thing and I can highly recommend this, is washing the shoes with a bunch of towels together at 40°C / 104°F at 800 rpm in my washing machine. Just using normal cleaning agent. And let them dry under or next to the radiator. I use to do this quarterly. And guess what I never have issues with dirty or smelling shoes. ... ah and one more thing ... Some gyms here in Germany offers those ozone- silvernanoparticleizer (hope this word make sense for you). One brand or device is called DesiDeoUno (Google for it if you like). It looks like a tiny microwave and does a fairly good job by spraying around ozonized air mixed up with silverparticles for aptox 5 min killing mainly bacteria. ... Ok that was everything from my side. Have a good one and keep doing such great content! Autenticy is what matters! ;) And you are doing great in this!

    Also tip for anyone using boot bananas, or any removable pouch insert to absorb moisture from the shoes as prevention. You're not supposed to leave them in the shoe. The pouches need to dry out too or they can't absorb more moisture or degrade far quicker, and you're essentially leaving the moisture in the shoe if you leave them in 24/7. Put them in your shoes immediately after climbing but then take them out after a certain period and make sure they have had time to dry out somewhere warm-ish and dry before reusing them. If you climb every day perhaps 2 pairs are sensible for this or you will end up having to replace the inserts really often and they don't work as well.

  • @chickenspy1854
    @chickenspy1854 5 лет назад +9

    I use some “activated charcoal bags” made for shoes to absorb moisture as preventative. It seems to work pretty well. Just whenever I’m not using them I stuff the bags in there. And they’re pretty cheap. $17 for a pack of 12. 6 pairs of shoes, basically.

    All good ideas. I would not use the alcohol because it will deteriorate the rub after time. But do use '10 Seconds Shoe Disinfectant and Deodorizer Spray'. Household disinfectant sprays like Lysol or Clorox are meant for kitchens and bathrooms - not your footwear. And I will definitely try the hand scrubbing with a brush to get the physical dirt out. I will do this instead of using the wash machine which beat up shoes causing the rubber to delaminate. Jenn is adorable.

    So many gains when multiple people take off their shoes at the same time..lol. Probably against popular option, but I wear low rise socks with my shoes. I haven't noticed loss of feel, or that my feet slip inside my shoe due to the socks. Idk...maybe if i was an advanced climber, it would make a difference. My shoes have no odor inside at all. I clean the outside and the bottoms with a natural all purpose cleaner, brush and microfiber towel after every climb, feels nice to start the next climb with clean shoes. Thanks for the video Jenn (badass exterior colors of the apts/houses in your video)

      Hey hey thanks! And thanks for the input, I've never thought about wearing socks, but if I were to do it, I'd wear low rise rocks for sure. They're thin enough and if you like wearing them, wear em!! Who cares!! And woah that's a really nice cleaning routine. I didn't even cover cleaning the exteriors, which is also nice to keep in mind if you want to preserve and clean your shoes!

    +1 for the diluted dish soap solution scrubbing. I used to use a toothbrush when I had old plastic ones knocking around (I have a reusable/refillable now so have no need for plastic toothbrushes!), now I use a couple of those cheap white flannel facecloths. I wet one with the solution and this allows you to use a finger to really get in the nooks of even small shoes and 'scrub' with the fibres of the flannel which still lathers any soap/scrubs away dirt but is less harsh than plastic bristles so I'm less worried about doing this regularly and the imapct it might have on any material or stitching inside the shoe. Once I've saturated all the internal parts of the shoe this way I use 1 or 2 cloths to essentially wipe away that remaining solution in or dirt in all surfaces of the shoe rather than rinsing. I rotate different parts of the cloth as it gets dirty so you can really see when the cloth stops coming away dirty when you can move onto the next part/corner etc. and I'm more confident I've got all dirt/soap out of the shoe than just rinsing. They dry out quicker this way too. You can also wash the cloths too and reuse them, either for the same purpose or others (i.e. cleaning rags etc).

    I have been using high doses of water purification tablets added to water and to soak my shoes in it. The idea is that whatever kills bacteria in the water kills also a bacteria that grow in your shoes. Just use like 10 times recommended does for drinking water and do not drink that water after ;). This comes double handy if you want to clean your shoes when hiking somewhere and the chance is that you already have those purification tablets with you, as well as they are relatively small and light compares to other solutions. On the downside you have to dry your shoes after but again in hiking conditions in sunny day it was never an issue.

    I wear skating socks. Really helps with odors because they trap the skin oil and let the moisture out, letting the skin breathe. And yes, keep your shoes outside of your bag. Mine are hanging on the quickdraw that is attached to my climbing backpack.
    I heard from other skaters that they put the skates in ziplock bag and put them in the freezer, but you are right, the bacteria still stays there.

      Ohh that's super interesting! I'm a few weeks too late to have the sun to dry my shoes in (heavy rain?) but will consider leaving them near a heater (just within enough range to receive a warm draft). I'm gonna do the scrubbing technique TYVM. I took another pair deepwater soloing in fresh water and that helped quite a bit! Unfortunately, the spot is hours away and seasonal. Once things are clean I may use socks like I did when I was starting out (should have a better sense now on any performance impacts).

Also the person at my gym said not to wash the shoes or sun-dry them so I think for now the solution I'm leaning towards is the Lysol/rubbing alcohol

      Same! I'm a relatively new climber and I had no odor problems before I started climbing, but it got pretty nasty pretty fast with my climbing shoes. I was half sure that my shoes were already gone too far, but was able to fix it with baking soda.
      I washed them in warm water in a bucket with a couple of spoonfull of soda and a brush - took 3 buckets until they were clean. I let them dry outside afterwards and put 1-2 teaspoons soda after they dried. I vaccum cleaned the shoes before using and holy moly all odor is gone!
      Edit: they are leather free (vegan) shoes, so not sure how it would go with shoes with leather.

  • @ashleyespinoza6863
    @ashleyespinoza6863 4 года назад

    I just got my first pair of shoes! Plan on airing out like you said, but to just keep bacteria away do you suggest I get a spray and spray shoes every time and air out just like gyms?

  • @biomorphic
    @biomorphic Год назад

    I put them in the washing machine, as I do with running shoes. Delicate cycle, 30ºC. And in between sessions I use a natural spray. Also I do always carry the shoes outside my bag. I was keeping the shoes in a sack but I noticed they were smelling so bad, so I started to carry attached to the backpack at the end of a session, which helps. At some point, no matter what you do, you will have to wash the shoes. Either scrubbing them, or using the washing machine. Note that I don't use a backpack anymore: I use instead a big chalk bag and I attach the shoes to that one.

    Usually just submerge then in warm soap water and brush the dirt out from the inside. Letting them dry slowly.
    After use, i usually just spray the inside with some 70% alcohol (a good amount) and set them aside until next use. The alcohol evaporates quick enough especially when you have some air circulation. Never had any problem with smell due to this.

    All organisms exist in some pH balance, and with most things, if they all of a sudden go into an environment where it becomes more acidic or more basic by a substantial factor, well, things die off. I'm not talking extremes of pH, but even a full logarithmic jump is enough to mess with most organisms. Obviously, the respective organisms that like either acidic or basic environments would thrive better, but this also means their chemistry shouldn't sustain them at relative pH neutral, and especially if you shoot in the other direction. Temperature is also a great thing to mess around with, as in general, lots of organisms die when out of their comfort zone, but you'd have to do some pretty crazy experiments to insure first, you're not ruining the integrity of the material in the shoe by going too low or too high in temperature, and second, immediacy of temperature change to a lower temperature, not putting into a freezer but something fairly colder. Ideally, you need to have a solid change in temperature as fast as you can, but I can't condone this considering risks. Baking soda, as has been mentioned in a few comments, is a great method that messes with pH, and should be cleaned with an oddly large amount at first, and to be worn with some baking soda still in, accepting what this entails. Cleaning it out and re-apply as necessary.
    Another thing is to see a family doctor. If your shoes smell bad after a short time wearing, it's very likely you have athletes foot or a potential other organism sticking to you, and these things can take a while to deal with properly. The sooner you deal with it, the sooner your cleaning will have longer lasting effects. I personally clean my shoes roughly once a week, depending on use and available spares... and how lazy I am that particular week.

    First thing is that I'm god damn jealous of LV climbing shoe designs. As a big and wide-footer, I'd kill for those Street LV's or Instinct VS in a last that'd actually fit me.
    On-topic: I tend to soap-brush my shoes from time to time while showering. Just feels like killing two birds with one stone. The main issue tends to be drying, especially for slip-on style shoes like the Instinct VS. For prevention I just take to leaving my shoes next to an open window. The combination of sunlight and airflow means that they're usually good to go two days later.

      @@Somavi For sure, but it's time climbing shoe companies pick up on aesthetic design improvements as well as functional. I don't think many people clamour over the urine-yellow La Sportiva shoes.
      At my size you just are a bit screwed when it comes to shoes, anyway. Street size 13, so for my feet most companies don't offer half-sizes. I don't even bother with SoIll, because of their sizing. :(

    I use a 70% methylated spirits spray. Cheap and effective. 70% does not evaporate too quickly so allows time to work. Methylated spirits is denatured ethanol, so just like how you’d wipe down a work bench in a microbiology lab. It also gets rid of the odour.

    Stop the stinkyness at the source, then you don't have to bother with vinegar / soaps. I wash my feet before climbing and use alum on the feet. No smell after using my shoes for 7 months! Also, don't ever use anti-bacterial soaps, they contribute to the issue with antibiotics resistance!
