    Open back would be a perfect fit for small room intimate acoustic shows and recording. Resonator is ideal for cutting through a band of instruments. Both are ideal for home noodles and lessons

    I don't play banjo (yet, but I'm only 60--give me time!), but I've always thought the brighter sound of the resonator back made those units better in a bluegrass band setting while that lonesome darker tone of the open back was better for folk singers in small duos and trios.

    After having seen many of Tony's guitar reviews over the years, this is the first time I've seen him play the banjo. Right on. Tony: stringed instrument beast.

    Love the mellow sound of the open back. The resonator sounds more sharp which and not so attractive to my ears. The open back is able to sound the notes with a better seperate distinction, the resonator's notes cut over each other. Open back gets my vote.

    • @DougieLink
      @DougieLink 2 года назад +1

      @@Kerm88 Yes the open back is better for singing. The resonator will drown out most if not all singers. Unless of course you are using a mic. Also the resonator banjo is wayyy heavier, so for camp fire singing etc go for the open back.
      If you need to play in a band then putting a pic up onto an open back is very easy. But i have two resonator banjos lol

    I have a Gibson (circa 1964) long-neck open back banjo and a Deering (circa 1985) standard-neck banjo with a resonator. Even with my tin ear, there is a very big difference in they way they can project sound. The Gibson is great for playing more classic, folksy tunes and the Deering is perfect for staying in the mix for bluegrass. It's all a matter of your style of music. Get your hands on both types and you are covered.

    Ole Joe Clark there at the end. Love that old song. Both are great, but it would depend on how it will be used. If on stage without a mic, then pic the one with the resonator. If playing at home, or jamming in small rooms, pick the open back. I have jammed so many times where all of the banjos have resonators, and the banjo is the only instrument you can hear, aside from the occasional mandolin. Yes the one with the resonator sounds best, but they are soooo loud in so many of the wrong situations. I play guitar, and most of the time get drowned out by even one banjo. A good banjo player should have one of each. Wish I learned to play one, but never could.

      As nobody replied, hopefully you have found out the answer after 8 months, but maybe it helps others. I personally have a cloth in to dampen the sounds. Banjo's created a LOT of sound, much more so than a guitar. This takes the edge off and makes it sound more muffled. I'm not sure it's why the actual good banjo players do it, but that's why I do it

    What would be a decent banjo for a beginner

    • @Stelmaria38
      @Stelmaria38 3 года назад +1

      The best time to learn an instrument was yesterday, the second best time is today. It's never too late, especially for banjo, lots of folks start "late" to learn. In term of instruments, it really depends what style you want to play and how you want to play it. If you are an old time fan and want to get into frailling (clawhammer) get an open back, the sound will be mellower and if you want to get into bluegrass get a resonator. I would personally stay away from Deering Goodtimes as when you get more advanced you will want to change pretty quickly. Rekording king makes great instruments for the price. Go check banjohangout.com you will find the answers you need. Happy pickin'

      @@Stelmaria38 thank you. I guess I’ll order mine tomorrow and start learning . I’m going to order Washburn with that resonator. Hopefully I’ll get some enjoyment. Any recommendations you have will be appreciated

      @@billcoley8520 I have heard good and bad things on Washburn, never played one myself but almost bought a B9 when I started. The issues with banjo is that you really get the quality you pay for. It's a lot of different components and if one is cheap the whole thing will sound bad. I would really recommend you to do some research on the model you are thinking to buy first. Of course trying first would be ideal, but it's not as easy those days. That being said I've heard good things on the B17. Good luck!

    What banjos are these?

  • @sepultura7771
    @sepultura7771 5 лет назад

    I could be wrong but one looks like a maple neck and the other looks like a Rosewood fretboard, that is quite a big difference and not an accurate comparison

    Almost seems an open back could be mic-ed from behind over the left hip of the player.

      Danny F dude go for it I just started I’m 21 years old you have so much time man. Even if your 70 years old you got time to have fun and enjoy music. I picked up the diatonic harmonica cause I love blues and western music. It’s so much fun and you learn more and more everyday. Practice around 30 minutes a day or more If you want and in a year you will make insane progress.

    Can't you just buy a resonator and remove the back when you want an open?

    • @musicvilladotcom
      @musicvilladotcom  4 года назад

      Not really, because of the hardware involved for attaching the resonator. Wouldn't be very comfortable to play.

    Is the banjo hard to play?

    • @igorsekulic6945
      @igorsekulic6945 9 лет назад +6

      The banjo isn't too hard. At least bluegrass style. Once you get down the finger picking pattern style for Scruggs style, and learn how to use the fingerpicks, you can get down how to play properly, and it's a whhhooollee lot of fun. I highly recommend playing. I've been playing for 2 years now and I love it :) I don't know about clawhammer but some people say it's easier. I tried it and I can't get it down.

      I've been playing for a month I'm 12 and it's fun get an hour of practice a day and you will have it down in no time I personally recommend Epiphone MB 100 open back.

      Scruggs style has never appealed or made sense to me, I play frailing/clawhammer and love it so much, and I find it fairly easy.

    Damn, looks like I have to get a resonator. Open back doesn’t sound nearly as good, it doesn’t have the high end twang that I associate with banjo

  • @unklewink
    @unklewink 7 лет назад +3

    I could tell the difference right off. The resonator has a fuller, boomier sound. Kind of like the Martin guitars.
