  • How different is the sound between cheap and expensive guitars? In this video, I will compare a 100 dollars guitar and a 3,000 dollars guitar. Is there really a difference?
Both guitars are recorded exactly the same way,
    - Same strings
    - No EQ, No Compression
    ・$ 3,000 guitar: Martin OO-28
    ・$ 100 guitar: Legend FG-15
    ・Microphone: AKG C414XLS

  • @lenb3661

The $2900 difference would be better spent on lessons, spending the equivalent in overtime work hours needed to buy it by practicing instead of working, etc. Okay, the Martin has a richer tone, especially in the lower frequencies. It also has internal bracings, solid top, different woods, construction techniques, etc. Not surprising in a $100 vs $3000 comparison. But as it would fit more into my budget range, and likely a lot of other recreational players budgets, I'd love to see this same comparison between say a $500 guitar and a $3000 guitar, which I think is more represents the budget range of many serious, but average players. Add that you can often find a quality guitar used at half or more off retail. I could spend $3000 on that Martin and still not play - or sound - as good as this guy does on the $100 guitar, so what would be the point.

These comparisons are kind of short sighted because there’s so much more that the extra cost counts for that can’t be perceived by just looking at a guitar or hearing it. For acoustics especially, since the action and in some cases necks can’t be adjusted, the instrument has to be perfect from finish. Fretwork and neck build quality are also more significant on an acoustic than electric guitars.
When it comes to good instruments, you want something that was built with more individual care and attention to detail rather than being mostly produced by a machine or mass assembly line. Musicians pay premiums to know a good luthier constructed and carefully crafted their instruments so they can be sure they are getting something good. With mass production, cheaper stuff can look or sound good and in some cases be real bargains but it’s a crap shoot and luck of the draw.
Also, guitarists like all sorts of extra swag like exotic hardwoods, fancy inlays and trim work that adds expense to a guitar without making it sound any better

The cheap guitar wasn't bad at all. It had a nice almost chorus like warm sound. In the first song it actually sounded a bit better then the Martin guitar. Sure, Martin has better dynamics and a clearer sound, but lacked that extremly warm sound of the cheap guitar. A very good guitar for such cheap price.

Great playing and great comparison. The 100 dollar guitar has a scooped sound, not balanced, not much overtone, thinner, especially on treble, and not as round a sound. That said is the Martin 30 times better? Maybe, but $ 3,000 seems high.
$ 1,500 - $ 2,000 all day. The $100 guitar is priced about right, maybe okay for the money. I have owned '70's Martin D18, '80's Guild D40, both incredible. Also own an inexpensive Johnson JG-610R guitar, and it is better sounding than the
    $100 guitar here. Similar
    price range. Elixir strings helped.

Play a Martin D28 in real life and you will understand what is the fuss all about. The clarity and smoothness in tone can not be matched. You can not judge that from youtube. As far as those who are saying its not 2900 times better, please study the law of diminishing returns. After a certain limit there is an exponential rise in cost and effort to create more higher quality in any product. Moreover, they sell very few of these guitars so price has to be higher. Plus its a martin, so brand value adds to proce as well.
Take supercars for example, they cost in millions but are they million times faster than fords? No. But it takes huge effort and cost to make them just thrice as fast as a ford.
Martin the supercar of guitar world and thats why the price. Having said that, the 100 dollar guitar was not bad for an absolute beginner.

There's something called the law of diminishing returns. The difference between a $100 and $200 guitar is great. Difference between a 200 and 400$ guitar, pretty big. Difference between a 400 and 800 guitar, noticeable but not great. And as you keep doubling the price the difference keeps getting less. It's not like paying 10x the price gets you a 10x better sounding and easier playing guitar. Rather, if you compare the sound between a 500$ guitar and a 5000$ guitar side by side, unless you have money to burn, you'll probably wonder why you spent an extra 4500 on something that doesn't really sound or play that much better. Instead of it being 10x better it may be 10%, or maybe even less. And if you are a skilled player it will matter even less. And learning on shitty guitars can actually help you become a better player since they are harder to play.

I'd like to see a volume guage on them because it's very hard to tell. I stopped watching and just listened, and I could not tell which one he was playing without looking. On certain chords I thought the high dollar one had more tone. If I were making money with it to pay for the instrument then I would certainly invest in the Martin but I guess my little Washburn is fine.

The difference is something you just don’t hear. craftmanship, durability, design… maybe the 100 guitar will break after 2-3 years. 3000 guitar lasts for generations. Not to mention the sentimental value thru the years of playing. 😊

the $3000 guitar sounds better than the $100 one but certainly not 30 times better!...the price is not justifiable...the sound difference wasnt great but noticable.....i find with the cheap guitars sometimes the high e-string slips of the neck when doing pull offs etc.
