Irish are known all around the world for being warriors. You have one of the greatest schools in the world Notre Dame claiming its the home of the fighting Irish. The empire was hardly defeated. By the Truce the IRA controlled some of West Cork and South Tipp that is it. The 1921 Treaty gave little more than home rule. It confirmed George V. He was granted the title King of Ireland. The British military was allowed to keep bases in the South of Ireland. The Crown Forces' conduct in this conflict was good overall but I accept there were aberrations.

I still have family that live in Ireland and my ancestors came from Ireland and as a Irish Canadian, I'm proud of the I.R.A.Keep fighting the good fight guys
+Chris Mooney if you are Irish Canadian it is more likely then not that you are related to Loyalists then to Republican Irish. when your ancestors went over to Canada the entire island was part of the British empire. So the only ones who would volunteer to protect the frontier lands would be those LOYAL to the crown.

THats F P Crozier at 5.34 the first overall commander-he sacked an entire company of Auxies on charges of looting murder burning and was hung out to dry. He had his powers taken from him, because of some of these ex officers in the Auxies having good connections. Ironic that he was a Protestant Ulsterman but he tried to impose law where LLoyd George made it non applicable.

Therein lies your answer.
You are not comparing like with like. No one ever said that Vietnam was part of the USA. The United States was backing one side in a civil war. In Ireland we were part of the domestic British states. The British were not foreigners who came to our shores. We were British. In reality we still are British even though most Irish people are not UK citizens. There is no contradiction in being Irish and being British. We are descendants of the Ancient Britons. We were politically connected to England and Wales since 1171. Our leaders agreed to this at the Treaty of Windsor. Our bishops also concurred at the Synod of Cashel. As the nationalist leader Isaac Butt said there was ''a Siamese Union'' between us we were '' a dependency upon England.'' More people would have died in the Famine had we not received aid from our kith and kin in GB. One of the problems has been sectarianism. Thankfully now few people care about denomination so that problem is largely laid to rest. Had GB stayed Catholic or had we converted to Protestantism then this distinction would not have existed.,

There were other plantations by the English in Ireland, not just the Ulster one. This was all part of the Anglicizing of Ireland. The English were always seen as the foreigners they were in Ireland. We were ruled by Britain but never British. All the political connections you mention were by coercion. The representatives in parliament were all from one corner- those who would do Britain's bidding, until Catholic Emancipation and Daniel O'Connell. In the early 1800's most of the population still spoke Irish (Gaelic). The introduction of National Schools by the British in 1831 sought to suppress the native language, with the Catholic Church now part of the Establishment, helping them achieve this end.
Thankfully, today, these troubles are well behind us and we live peacefully as two friendly, neighbouring states, and certainly most of us who have relatives in the UK know that they have the Siamese Union Syndrome you mention.

Obviously if the British were willing to use the tatics of the past Ireland would have remained part of the UK the IRA guerilla campaign was succesfull in making Ireland ungovernable and more importantly winning over British public opinion the IRA while not having the ability to win militarilly but was very successful politically The nine county Ulster was only 55% protestant so a six county Northern Ireland was accepted as it had a 65% working majority the war itself left only about 2000 dead

Google non Sequitur. Just so it's known I'm neutral when it comes to the conflict. What you've stated has nothing to do with the outcome. The Brits did a lot of acts which can only be described as evil, including their inaction during the famine (unless you count armed guards carrying food out of Ireland) but the Ira were often terrorists, killing civilian targets. Even if I fully supported one side, in the end the insurgency failed regardless of who was morally correct. Many tyrants as well as just causes have been defeated.

facts are the IRA killed over 1,100 & the INLA killed 125 The Officials killed about 50. The IRA also killed around 100 Loyalists & the INLA & IPLO about 30 - 40 loyalists. And the IRA's biggest operation against British was the Warrenpoint were they killed 18 Para scum & injured about a dozen. The INLA's biggest attack the British was also the second biggest attack on the British - the Droppin Well bomb killed 11 British Soldiers & 6 British collaborators 17 killed in total & injured about 50,. After 1984 the INLA were a form of their former selves. but still paid the UVF back for Cappagh in 1991. in June 1994 an INLA ASU ambused & killed 3 top UVF men including Trevor King who was like the OC of that area. Typical Loyalist scumbag fashion instead of going after the INL the people who dod it or the IRA they attacked totally innocent people with AK's & Sub MG's & killed the oldest man of the troubles in doing so & 6 altogether & injured about 10.
