      That is correct. The tradeoff is price. Pro: bare roots are very affordable Con: they take longer to bloom.

    Priced very reasonably at Walmart. I agree with u on making sure that u r getting a viable root, tuber, etc. That is why u should get them early and potting them up will also give u an early start.

      The creme de cassis is beautiful! I love how there is 2 tone coloring to the petals, dark on one side, and light on the other. I also enjoy the smaller size which makes it easier to use in floral arrangements.

    Walmart for the win! I picked up a few bags of dahlias last year, in addition to dahlias from online sellers and far and away my favorite was Zingaro from Walmart. I failed to overwinter them, but was able to pick up a few bags yesterday. I'm pre-sprouting them and hope to take some cuttings as I have grand plants to create a hedge in my raised bed garden. Great tips on looking for sprouts. I'd also add when looking at the bags of dahlias, loose, wiggly tubers is not a great sign as they've broken off of the stem.

    • @HookedandRooted
      @HookedandRooted  2 года назад

      I agree! The price is perfect for trying out dahlias. And even for more experienced growers. We could all use more budget friendly options these days. I've grown zingaro from Walmart also! In 2019, its in my other Walmart dahlia vid that I lined above. It was a beauty! Cuttings sound fun! I'm hoping to try from cuttings and from seed at some point also. I'll check out your channel! I agree about the loose wiggly bits, avoid those.

    Nice selections - one of my best dahlias was from home depot last year. I generally buy online, from costco, and walmart, HD, Lowes. One tip for growers is to buy as soon as they start selling them at the store and opening plastic and storing in a cool, dark location in your house. At the big box stores they can start to grow in the bags or start to mold. I pre-start my dahlias in pots and transplant out when it warms up. I think this gives me earlier blooms. They can get leggy but can be pinched. In zone 7 I start indoors and move to plastic greenhouse. I took a lot of potted dahlias to my son in zone 5 last summer and they did really well. Just found your channel so will go back and look at last year's dahlias. Thank you.

      Good to hear! I agree with keeping them in a cold dark spot. I have mine in paper grocery bags in the garage by the door where it stays around 50 degrees. I had tried presprouting them by potting them up first week of April in the past, but I decided it was extra work and now I just plant them around mothers day directly outdoor. I may get blooms a couple weeks later, but it's ok. Thanks for watching and for your comment

    Great reminder that Walmart has really reasonable and beautiful options. I have bought gladiolus at Walmart and run into more thrips infestations. From here on out, I’ll be dipping everything into a bit of bleach or whatever other disinfectants I can find that are safe for that bulb/corm type.

    I know exactly what you mean about cutting them. I feel better about it when I have plenty but if theirs only one flower on a plant I won’t want to cut it. That’s a good idea about the weight of the package, I never thought about that. I always look in the bag as best I can an I try to go with the ones I can see live roots an shoots on them. Becareful with the crown gall. I found the tubers I got from Walmart last year had about 35% crown gall problem. I have the lavender perfection that I got last year from walmart. It was the last dahlia plant of mine to bloom which was pretty lately.. like a good 2 months after the rest started. It was the healthiest looking plant though. The blooms got huge like a true dinner plate. Most of my other Walmart dahlias didn’t end up being dinner plates but I still love them!
