My two sons just became Croatian citizens and getting their passports now. They're now dual citizens from U.S. and Croatian. Now I'm trying to become a citizen because by the time I hit retirement age, the U.S. will gut social security and no one will get anything for retirement. Retiring in the U.S. is a death wish
Same here in Australia, they have already set cut of dates of birth, 1968 and after no social security any more. We fell in love with Croatia and are doing everything we need to do to become citizens and live there.

Thanks again Brian and Carrie. Our list of places to visit is growing every time you add a video. Could you do a video with a map of where you started your travels and how chronologically you progressed with each country? I can see all of the work you put into your videos so I completely get it if the video doesn't get made. Best wishes to you both and hope the holidays are good times for you.
We are always looking for new video ideas Darryl, thank you. Our "Europe Top 3 Places to visit" video doesn't have a map but you do talk of each destination in order of our travels over the last year. A map would be a great idea!! Thanks again! Cheers!!🍻
@@BrianandCarrie I will go back and look at that video. We are having a difficult time working with the 90 day rules and it looks like it will be getting worse next year. I've said it before but I believe you two have the perfect recipe in life for success in the RUclips market. Just hang in there and know people really look forward to seeing you.
Great video. The visa info was super interesting. I thought Croatia would have similar visas to other EU countries, but these options, especially the rent upfront for 12 months option, sounds great!
Really enjoyed this and all your other videos I’ve seen. Interestingly, I have been thinking about Croatia as an option to live. So this morning I checked to see what RUclips‘s were out there on Visa options and your RUclips came up, it was perfect timing! Looking forward to seeing your adventures in Croatia over the next few months. 😎 Thanks so much for sharing your travels!
@Brian and Carrie - Croatia could be an option. Now that Portugal is ruining its status as a retirement destination. Assuming ofcourse the part about not being taxed on what you earned in the U.S is true. Thanks for this video.
Its sad that so many Croatians are leaving the country because of lack of jobs and low pay. Its such a beautiful country but politics and goverment there is very bad.

Croatia has a very lenient citizenship by descent programme. My great grandparents are from there. I've looked into applying for citizenship which is very possible. From what I understand, tax for citizens seems a lot less attractive. There are 2 types of income tax: 1. national income tax 2. local district tax. So, as I'm in tech and work remote, if you clear Euro 49K, or close there about, you are essentially paying 30% national tax. Then depending on the city you live in, you will need to pay more tax on top of that. So, if I wanted to live in Zagreb (for example), that's an additional 18% tax on top of the 30% national. So, at years end I would essentially be working from January through June for the Croatian government....There are a select few places (seems to be out in the countryside) where district tax is 0%, but even Split is high, I think around 15%. It definitely seems a lovely place to visit, but with a diminishing population, they are going to have to get a lot more creative to entice skilled workers and get people to repatriate there. But, perhaps from just being a digital nomad and not going the citizenship route, it would be quite nice as you explained. That or get Croatian citizenship and run like Judas to another EU country. Anyhows, great video, enjoyed the perspective very much, thank you! :-)
Greetings from Split :-) great video. I just feel I need to add something about the renting a place in Split. Not sure is this the year you were (or are) here, or this was few years ago, but don't expect to rent a place for 350$ in Split, unfortunately that is old news, and that was the situation 3-4 years ago. Last years the renting price is quite a bit more expensive. Ukrainian refugees, and growth of tourism have affected prices. So don't expect to find anything under 400-500$, and that is one bedroom without special luxury :-( also important thing to know about renting a place is that in most of cases you can rent a place on monthly basis only from November till June at the best. From June till November people rent their places by day (touristically) and the prices go from 50-150$ per day. So do not be surprised if the landlord asks you to leave the apartment on June 1.
For a digital nomad visa, you have to demonstrate that you have a contract with a company outside and earn 3,700 € per month !!! HUngary is, by far, the most permissive: you have to demonstrate that you earn only 2,000 € per month.
Quick question, since there's no longer a border between Hungary and Croatia, there's no record of you even entering the country, how on earth are they gonna check how long you've been in the country?
The problem with the healthcare is that the private section is limited when it comes to serious health care issues and you find that you will have to use the puplic healthcare which means long waiting and not best care.
Hi, Tony! We are going to be in SE Asia starting January for 5 months. After that most likely Mexico so we won't be back in Europe at the soonest until 2024. With that being said Italy and Turkey are on our list. We would like to spend 3 months in Italy when we do decide to go. Thank you for watching and hope you enjoy our Croatia series! Cheers!!🍻
in Croatia is nice if ure rich or worked in some of rich EU or world countries and youre retired, but to work here is nightmare, only u can live something normally if ure programmer and work remote for company from other normal country... its not profitable to work here, wages whatever you do are mostly 500-800€, prices of food and almost everything else same or higher than EU or other World rich countries....small wages, high prices are the reason why anyone who can leave Croatia leaves and go in any other normal EU country, in couple of last years whole families are leaving...
If he gets a job, he will totally enjoy it. Probably one of the best companies localy in terms of employment conditions and benefits, and work life balance. I wish him luck
New Subscriber. I've watched video's of yours in the past but just now jumped on the wagon. My question is: When I get my rental agreement signed and notarized where do I take it and what other paperwork do I need to take with me?
From everything we have researched the police station is where you must go for almost everything. They will be able to answer any questions as well. Good luck and thank you for the sub!!! Cheers!!!🍻
Thanks for all the good info in this video, very helpful. Will the extended stay allowed by the rental pre-payment option be affected by Croatia’s entry to the Schengen Zone on Jan 1?
Great video! Q: what is the availability of organic produce in Croatia? My wife and I are kinda veggie-head, granola crunchers from Oregon. Vegan or vegetarian living a decent option there?
It is optional first of all no GMO stuff for now. Lot of farmers are turning to organic produce but better check before you buy something. But word of advice best cousine in Croatia are meat and fish based but if you look hard you can find veggie support in Croatia.
Thanks for another great video was very interesting! I just have to ask who published the statistical list you showed as far as the healthcare index ranking goes? It's an honest question I would really like to know to publish this list. I lived in Germany for many years and I am presently living in Mexico and according to this statistic you show, Mexico supposedly has a higher standard of healthcare than Germany???? Not to mention supposedly Mexico ranks much higher than Canada, and I guess I'm a bit biased because I am Canadian. I'm sorry but I can't take anything serious you say after reading that. However I really enjoy your videos in general ;)
Once you apply at the police station with all documents good and they approve it, how long until you have to ID card on you? Trying to estimate a timeline for my wife. Thank you!
Unfortunately, Raja we are not familiar with your situation so we cant really answer that with confidents. You may want to contact the consulate in Croatia.
If you are in Croatia (or any other Country) for 183 days or more in a Calendar/Tax year then you become a tax resident of that country. Therefore, you will need to submit a tax return for income in that country and income elsewhere. Depending on the tax agreements with you home country then tax paid can be off set against any tax due.
Hello Brian and Carrie. I was very surprised that a birth certificate is required with the application. Is it really so? This is the first time I hear about it and I don't think I will be able to obtain one, since I was born in Russia fifty years ago and immigrated to US about 35 years ago. My husband immigrated 46 years ago. He has no relatives to help him out obtaining birth certificate or a duplicate. We are not going to go to RF and now it would be dangerous to do so. Does it mean neither of us can apply to year-long visa in Croatia? Can anyone with knowledge comment too? Thank you!
The most logic answer would be try to contact nearest Croatian konzulate and maybe just maybe they can find some other solution on your US paper but unfortunate birth and marriage certificate is must have for almost anything you apply in Balkan.
Your videos have really inspired me and my wife. Have you ever considered trying out the Czech Republic? I’m guessing the lack of peaches would not suit you 😉

There is no border between Hungary and Croatia. How can they possible know how long you've been in the country if you can pass through a non existent border from Hungary and there's no record of you ever entering Croatia. Magic?
There is no border between majority of Schengen countries. Its a risk we aren't willing to take, cause even with out a border we've been stopped for passport control. Best to just stay in the 90 days 😊. Cheers!!
