Getting reverse pendulum with penhold grip is harder than normal grip. You have to twist your wrist in uncomfortable way to get high spin

The reason why the guy missed at 1:35 isn't because it's a particularly hard serve to receive (just a simple push will do). The reason is because the serve appeared to be going long allowing for a forehand loop return, but then landed back onto the right at the edge.
By doing a simple push motion with the closed blade before it bounces too high.
That's basically it.
Mah Lin has the most useful serve others put the players in disadvantaged physical position to take a return or it is just different with no effect

His serve was the best because he used a pen hold grip. Penhold allows for wrist power without hurting wrist and allowing the paddle to fly out of your hand
Number 3 is crazy. Imagine trying to get used to that and then he switches it up back to a normal serve. He'd keep you totally off balance

@@schenzur it is mostly perpendicular. That is absolutely within margin error. He isn't even hiding the ball for the opponent but for the audience behind him. Is that illegal? 🤔😂
First of all, he did not block the opponents view but it is understandable as from this angle it kind of looks like that. Secondly, he is allowed to throw slightly non-perpendicular and anyway they only ban throwing the ball backwards but he only threw it to the side a little.

Lin's was my favorite as well, but i have to partly disagree. The excessive paddle movement prior to, and after ball contact, can wreak havoc on a returner's senses. It's part of what makes Samsonov's serves so great. Having said that, Ma Lins backspin WAS mind boggling. But the deception in his serves was achieved by aggressive movement in his paddle hand before/after striking the ball.

I can't do those but for the truly skilled, most are fancy trick shots with elaborate hand and wrist movements to disguise just regular serves w/ spins and make the opponent think that it is too complicated and hard to return.
Moreover, some umpire might call it illegal for hiding the ball, with one almost releasing the ball just a few cms above the table.

These people have some underlying geographical condition thats why they are serving like this.
2:30 is.an illegal serve!!! The ball must be thrown vertically. An arc toward the server's body is NOT VERTICAL. About 1/3 of the serves in tournament play arev ILLEGAL.
Vertical is often a debate but agree here! Also the ball is outside of the table which makes this serve double illegal.
Bruh some of these serves are literally just a normal hook serve with weird twisting and turning motion
0:40 in this slowmo you can clearly see, that he isn't really throwing the ball upwards at all. He just moves up his hand with the ball and hits the ball right after it loses contact.

It doesn't matter if the ball false down or not.
You have to through it up 16 cm, without touching it with your hand like he did. Then you need to hit it with your blad while it's falling. It doesn't matter if it has fallen 16 cm down already or only 1 cm.

Asuka's serves are illegal. He is hiding the ball in the palm of his hand and using a double pump when tossing the ball.

They're all illegal except for Ma Lin. They're all coming in front of the ball thus hiding it mid-air. Moreover, ball has to be thrown straight up, not towards yourself, not away from yourself, straight up. They all were pulling the ball towards themselves. Only Ma Lin had the correct posture and action.

Not a regular TT watcher. Why wouldn't Ma lin serve that way every time? Seems difficult to return even if opponent was ready for it.

Many of the serves are not legal. Ball has to be thrown up nearly vertical.
The fourth guy serve is totally illegal, you can't throw the ball horizontally and he is even covering it with his body
The first and third are illegal. Cannot cup the ball during service (1) and you cannot hide the ball behind your body (3)
