    I started playing table tennis at college, in 1961. There was this guy who used a bare wooden paddle, and he loved to hit the ball way high in the air, (like 20-30 feet) with spin, so when it hit the table it would bounce way off to the side. Oh yes, and when he hit a blooper that hit the net and just flopped over, he would call 'overies'.

    I started playing pickleball a few months ago and have found it to be popular because it’s such an easy game to learn and master. I thought the game was going to be a smaller version of tennis, but it’s really more of a bigger version of TT since pure athleticism is secondary to quickness and touch.
    Anyway, at the top levels, PB is essentially in the 1930’s stage these days…it will be interesting to see how it evolves as better talent and equipment develops.

    It's crazy how the top players of the 1930s had very different techniques, to say the least. Amateur-looking by our standards.

    • @-danR
      @-danR 4 месяца назад +17

      amateur- _looking_ is the correct perspective, yes. Their techniques were driven by the lightweight, no-sponge pimpled rubber. Because with those surfaces, there's no payoff in throwing full body momentum into a (speed and spin) counter-drive or loop, there was no reason for wide stances, big swings and a lot of waist and core muscles going into attack. So everyone, except in chopping (and even then...), stood upright, and sort of smacked the ball around with their forearms and wrists.
      And you see a lot of weird dynamics with those arms and wrists. With little to worry about in terms of incoming spins of all kinds, their was little danger of mis-reading and mis-hitting a ball: you just had to worry about getting it back, whatever the stroke action or what joints were involved.
      A lot of the style was also driven by an emulation of Lawn Tennis of those days, where again, a lot of the top players were more upright in their stance. See:

    The table is too small, will be much fun if the table size doubles in width and length.

    • @guyinsf
      @guyinsf Месяц назад +1

      A table as big as the size you're proposing would drastically cut down the speed of the game and it would completely turn this sport into something totally different. Defensive players will have an advantage over offensive players. That wouldn't be fun to watch. The ball would have to be a little bit heavier so it can travel at a faster speed. The physics would completely change the game with a table that big.

    Someone in the comment section says the techniques of the top players of the 1930's are (were) amateur-looking by our (today's) standards. And here's my response to that:
    That's comical. Because when I look at the techniques of today's top 2024 players, I can say the exact same thing . . . AMATEUR-ISH, but by MY standards, established since April 5, 2023.
    Yes, a new(?), but more advanced, versatile, and aesthetic grip/style/techniques is currently under development, courtesy of me, to challenge today's modern "Made in China" shake-hand/pen-hold ping-pong culture/techniques. When the time's right, WE WILL SEE if the table tennis community will welcome an upgraded version of this game . . . in terms of a new grip/style/techniques.
