  • In today's video covering another problematic F1 car, I take a look into the 2022 Mercedes W13. I wanted to first take a look at what Mercedes did right to be so dominant throughout the turbo-hybrid era, and then deconstruct what went wrong with Mercedes going into the new regulations that made the W13 and W14 so uncompetitive.
    MUSIC - Karl Casey @ White Bat Audio
    2022 Mercedes W13 problems. 2023 Mercedes W14 problems. Will Mercedes abandon their sidepod design? Will it look more like the Red Bull or Ferrari? We'll know soon.

      Race winning car. George Russell had 8 podiums and 19 top 5's. But George doesnt count for the Hamilton shills I guess

    • @dchia29
      @dchia29 10 месяцев назад

      The results were good for George coming from a Williams but remember this is a title contending WORKS team fighting for 3rd. By their standards it was a failure compared to RB or Ferrari.
      If their goal was to respond to the 2021 season and win a championship, by their standards they failed.
      Also the victory in Brazil wasn’t on merit and gave the team a false sense of progress leading them down the-same path for 2022.
      You could be happy for George getting the occasional podium but I’d be happier if they were fighting for the championship not happy with a 3rd place podium finish.

    “The car that could have been” so true. I’m a RedBull fan and when I saw the Mercedes zero side pod in 2022 before the season, I thought “oh crap, this looks NOTHING like the other cars! They found the loophole and are going to dominate for another 4 years” until 2026. And I was GENUINELY shocked when the car turned out to be problematic

      Team Brackley designed the title winning car of the first year in the last three Technical Regulation overhauls prior to 2022 (2009 as Brawn inheriting Honda's concepts, then 2014 and 2017 as Mercedes-Benz) so them missing the mark with the 2022 car was a huge surprise to everyone; especially since Mercedes were damn-near untouchable between 2014-2020, and Red Bull had double down in 2021 to make Merc bleed by taking the Drivers, causing people to expect Red Bull to fall back into their vicious cycle where after Mercedes had already held a successful title defence, Red Bull would finally catch up on pace only to fall back all over again at the start of the next season.
      The fact that Mercedes' relative performance is now even _worse_ to the point of currently being stuck behind Aston Martin; a *customer* team that uses a number of shared mechanical components and testing apparatus tells me that something's gone wrong in the chassis & aero development and Mercedes either don't know what's wrong or are too stubborn to admit it, or at least were prior to the upgrades coming in later this year.

      No sidepods is one of the most insane innovations I’ve ever seen in my time watching F1. It is truly groundbreaking and aero benefits will be huge, don’t need a wind tunnel to see that. With development on PU limited it’ll be hard to replicate - advantage locked in for years?

      IMO the R27 was every bit as good as the R26 and had Fernando stayed or another top star driver been dropped into that car, it would've challenged for the title but for that season they had Fisichella and Kovaleinen and well we know they weren't particularly quick drivers even when given machinery that could easily win races

    • @JarretM.
      @JarretM. Год назад +8

      @@stinkyroadhog1347 well like you said, that’s in your opinion. but ferrari and mclaren were much faster, even the sauber was quicker than the r27. yes maybe if fernando stayed he would be fighting for podiums, but rarely wins. not to mention the mass damper was gone, flawing the car even more than the late season r26.

    Great video! I also think another 2022 car that completely fell through was the AT03. AlphaTauri/Toro Rosso used to constantly be a midfield threat and a lot of the time be leading or be close to leading the midfield. Seeing them fall off that hard in 2022 was pretty disappointing

    Why some people simply dismiss history by denying that Ferrari was actually faster in 2017 and 2018 just they lost because Hamilton didn’t made mistakes. I think it’s because it fits their narrative, so they pretend 17 and 18 were “dominant” seasons.

    Honestly the 2022 regs have exposed the Merc design team. In 2014 the Mercedes power unit was so good that it catapulted its customer teams up the order, just look at Williams. Merc literally turned down the engine by 10-15% or something to appear less dominant. Now that there is no Merc power advantage and no infinite money advantage, Mercedes just isn't the best team anymore

    Really cool series man. I'd hate to pick on McLaren, but they have a long list of problematic cars to choose from if you want to make a video. You could choose any of their cars from the years 2004, 2006, 2013, or 2015.
    Their 2004 or 2013 cars could make for a compelling video. Their 2004 car was plagued with issues after Kimi almost won the title in 2003. And 2013 was really the beginning of the downfall for McLaren at the sharp end of the grid.

    3:29 the only think I’ll say is that this overlooks the 2017 regulations changes
    These were the biggest car regulation changes aerodynamically wise since 1998 or 2009 when they went to 2M wide cars fatter tires and a lot of more aerodynamic development allowed
    You can see the difference in lap times between 2016 and 2017

    Thing is in theory zero pods should incresase aerodynamics by a lot, especially if you already have great downforce. Problem is, omitting the pod and hence the radiators and all other part involved into spaces normally used for the engine and fuel tank ending up pushing the cockpit further forwards and raising the height of the fuel tank by a lot. And that messes with the center of gravity of a car and will throw off drivers used to a normal center of gravity for the entirety of their careers. Yes porpoising was an issue, but one exaggerated by the true issues. That plus all the other smaller issues they dealt with, it’s a miracle they didn’t do worse than they did.

    Suggesting Merc were in a league of their own in 2017/2018 is just wrong. Ferrari got close both times and then crumbled. Lewis in the 2018 Ferrari probably wins WDC. Additionally, saying Merc could just outspend everyone, like those little companies like Ferrari and RedBull is odd.
