      Good point.
      That's the problem with Aldas.

He had no idea how Schumacher-Massa did in 2006 but tried to make a "What if Schumacher stayed for 2007" video, which turned out to be a nonsense again.

He was still able to win a race in 09
But McLaren struggled through the season.
The biggest difference, is that Hamilton's teamate was Kovalainen, a slower driver comparing to Russell.
Mentally, I guess it's difficult for Hamilton to fight with a car that is not super competitive , whilst batteling internally with a younger version of himself.
Hands down, the most monumental challenge in Hamilton's career so far.

    • @dragonkrieg4444
      @dragonkrieg4444 2 года назад +3

i don't think it's anywhere near most monumental. at this point, Lewis is already a 7-time world champion with the most wins of any driver in history. he has nothing to prove to anyone, and finishing the year behind George Russell will not change that, except to those that will die on their little molehill denying it anyway.
the most monumental goes to his rookie season in 2007, when he had reigning double world champion Fernando Alonso in the garage next to him. the man that just ended Michael Schumacher's dominance and one of the greatest drivers to ever sit behind the wheel of a Formula 1 car.
no amount of "mclaren biased" blah blah blah changes the fact that had it not been for McLaren's self-sabotaging strategy in China and a bizarre gearbox glitch in Brazil, he would've both decisively beaten Fernando Alonso (no one else has come close since) and taken a rookie world championship.
another contender would be 2018, when 4-time world champion Lewis Hamilton, and one of two possible greatest drivers of this era, came up in a direct title fight against the other contender for greatest driver of this era in 4-time world champion Sebastian Vettel. by the end of the season, it was clear Lewis Hamilton was the better between the two, and cemented his place over Vettel as the greatest of the generation. while he and Mercedes rose to new heights, Vettel and Ferrari crashed and burned.
the most monumental challenges are when there is actually something to be gained, something to rise to in victory. a rookie world championship and the title fight of a generation are stakes that few other drivers find themselves in contention, let alone rise to the occasion. whether he beats George Russell or not this year is inconsequential in comparison to what hes already done.

2007 was a very particular season, and in fact, Alonso was the one with that monumental task in his hands, not Lewis.
And the reason why I say this, is because Lewis drove with no pressure.
Besides that, he was in a very familiar environment, totally supported by the big names in the team.
If Lewis made a mistake in 2007( which happened) was forgiven and supported literally by everybody, media included, as he was the new super talent in f1.
If Lewis makes a mistake today, he'll have much more pressure on himself, media included.
To be honest, 2007 was the perfect situation for him to arrive in f1 and cause a positive impression right away.

Only season you can say he was truly bad is 2020, and that was due to quite obvious circumstances within the team. Vettel has been in a midfield team at least 3x in his career (not counting 2022) and he still managed scored a podium in all of those teams.
It's called having a bad season. These guys are human. Hamilton in 2009 and 2011 was very prone to crashes and spins, still, it doesn't take it away from him being an amazing driver.
Besides 2020, which was quite obvious from the start of the season and during what was happening mid-season, in 2014 Vettel had 8 reliability issues during qualifying and 3 during races. He also was among the drivers who had the least amount of testing, in a season where cars had the most dramatic changes since the start of F1's modern era.
So yeah... that amount of DNFs, plus qualifying issues which would put him behind on the grid and very few testing (even a few practice sessions) and very short amount of testing time in a car so much different than the year before had a massive impact, that and the car just not being championship worthy as Mercedes were absolute rockets and were the clear winners since day 1, and Ferrari talks behind the scenes... Don't forget that he had an underperfoming clause on his contract. Tons of changes, he also became a father that year and Schumacher, his idol of F1 and father-figure in the sport was put in a coma.
And yes, Ricciardo was on the pace more often, but that was also arguably his best season in F1 to date. He did things in that season I didn't see him doing in any other. Even in the very next year he was unable to beat Kvyat on points when both had similar issues (in fact, Kvyat had more crashes).
2015 pretty much proved he wasn't exposed to anything. In terms of %, Vettel in 2015 was faster than Kimi more so than Fernando was in 2014, and 2014 was Kimi's 1st season comeback for Ferrari while 2015 was Vettel's 1st season for Ferrari.
Hamilton on the other hand, has never driven a midfield car other than the FIRST HALF OF THE 2009 SEASON. It wasn't even a full season, as the car became top-tier after the upgrades in Hungary, it even locked out a front-row in one GP if IIRC.
So... yes, comparing Hamilton to him is an absolutely valid case.

These are people who are genuine haters for whatever reasons, or generally younger people just getting into F1 and have no idea of intricacies of the sport.
This narrative that Russell is dominating Lewis is just not true. George has managed to jump Lewis and I believe Lando because of a virtual safety car intervention. Even then Lewis was still catching him towards the end of the race and was told to back off.
The last race the sprint race showed the limitations of that Merc when stuck in the midfield. George started 11th ended up 11th. No places gained. He got a great start in the Sunday's race and was able to extract the most out of the car so he finished 4th. He didn't pass anyone on track either.
Another point of note, in the second race although Lewis had a poor qualifying, he was projected to finish 6th on merit had Alonzo car not partially blocking the pit entrance and the confusion that ensued cost him to miss out on a pit there.
Most of the 21 points deficit is pure circumstantial. BTW, I like George, this is not hating on him.

There are big differences between 2009 and 2022 for Hamilton. Back then he was just 24 years old, he was more or less at the point his career, where Verstappen is today. Today Hamilton is 37 and he said he doesn’t want to drive until he is 40, which means he will have not more than 3 years in the sport.
Additional to that, back than in 2009 he was the clear number one in the team, he was world champion, had beaten his team mate the season prior and was a super-talent. Today he is the most successful driver in F1 history, but he has a new team mate, who is 13 years younger and driving on his level in first few races, while Hamilton is from his age over his zenith.
In 2009 he was the future of his team, today Russell is Mercedes future. Mercedes might see no chance for this or next year and maybe do more or less the same to Hamilton as Ferrari did to Vettel in 2020.
I also doubt he can keep 100% motivated fighting for single points, like Vettel couldn’t in 2014 and 2020. Russell will stay 100% motivated for sure, the W13 is still the best car of his career.

IMO Merc car this season is not that bad as some people try to present it. Yeah it’s clearly not a front-runner, but definitely not a backmarker. Back in 1st half of 2009 season McLaren was definitely one of the slowest cars until massive development after summer break. And now the problem is really in Lewis whether he is unmotivated or not used to compete in an upper midfield car after a long period of dominance. Another obstacle is him getting older, so personally I’d recommend him to retire unless he wants to be outscored by a younger and hungry teammate (similar case to Seb vs Charles in 2019-2020).

I remember their 2009 car. That was a legit dog. This year's car is no where close to that car. The 2009 car was actually performing within it's design parameters but was simply horrible and the competition simply did a better job. This year's car is no where near it's operation window and it does not need a B spec car to resolve the issue. They need to solve the porpoising with strengthening the floor and deploy a better suspension. When these things are deployed, we will see that car that Ferrari and red bull was concerned about.

Plus, who doesn’t like to see an elite sportsman be challenged?

9:49 What does it take for RUS to prove that he is "more than Lewis' equal"? It would be great to see them have a _W13_ that was a genuinely consistent challenger for poles and wins. Few would disagree that RUS is genuine _WDC_ material, but it's a tad premature to render a verdict like "more than Lewis' equal". What is plain to see is that RUS is extracting more out of the _W13_ than HAM. HAM looks uncomfortable in that cockpit and often even sounds confused on team radio to boot. on the surface, it even looks like RUS is much more attuned to the _F2-like_ feel of the simplified-aero, new-era _F1_ car. For a man renowned for extracting laudable performances out of suboptimal machinery during the worst of the _McLaren_ spells, it seems the 8 consecutive years HAM spent in a world-beating car have virtually wiped out that adaptability.
*Fairly bold prediction:* HAM will not get to terms with how the _W13_ generates its downforce and handles overall. For the first time in his _F1_ career, he will go poleless and winless through an entire season. If _Merc_ get pole(s) and/or wins, they will all be claimed by RUS. For the first time in his racing career, he will be *comprehensively* beaten by a teammate. There are a number of similarites to the last time a storied champion was defeated by a regs shift. I'm thinking, of course, about post-blown-diffuser VET.
    *Observation*
When an _F1_ driver delivers consistently better performances than his teammate, he tends to have the ear of the technical staff and thus a greater influence on car development. HAM will obviously command gargantuan levels of respect for having delivered for the team since he arrived, but I feel RUS has just the combination of rare driving ability, cerebral wattage and disciplined, determined application that would capture the team the moment HAM's motivation begins to wane. I reckon we are not far off that point and that RUS might even spark a premature end to HAM's career.

for now I think its too early to say, the car seems to be another 2009 mclaren but way more consistent, but I think its more than that. Like I said its too early to say but george seems to be more used to this more problematic car than hamiltion for now, which makes sense. Maybe it can be motivation or other stuff, but for sure just like in 2009 that his mclaren got some nice development, I believe the merc will sooner or later be more consistent on podiums and wins too.
I would be more surprised if he doesn't get to grips when the car improves or even if mercedes can't improve the car that much, because one thing would be both drivers being between 3 and 7 place on average in races, another would be the same inconsistent results from one and consistent from the other.
I know that saudi and imola he had different setup and that can be part of the reason yes, at the end of the day the driver chose to have that setup for qualifying or race so It's not like mercedes or any team shoves any setup without driver's feedback or pointers.

In relative performance the 09 McLaren was certainly worse than the current Mercedes. Mercedes still looks to be either 3rd or 4th best car on the grid, which McLaren definitely wasn't at the beginning of 09 season. But ultimately things will depend on how long it takes for Mercedes to turn things around. As bad as that McLaren initially was, it did end up winning two races and a string of podiums.
I also think people are too quick to jump the gun on the whole Hamilton vs. Russell thing. Overall there hasn't been that much of a difference between them with Lewis having looked stronger of the two in two of the four races and George in the other two. The points gap between them is really only due to Imola and Russel having benefited from the safety car at Australia.

It's honestly funny to see how many excuses are being made for Hamilton's lack of performance in the W13. I remember Seb not being afforded a similar benefit of doubt when he lagged behind his teammate (Ricciardo & Leclerc) in 2014 and 2020 respectively. His legacy was called into question too, he too was deemed "wasted", "washed", "can't drive", "lucky WDC" and what not. I'll be honest though, I never thought Hamilton n Mercedes would struggle this much this season. I sure as hell didn't expect PR63 to beat Lewis in the standings. I still think Lewis will rebound and then proceed to beat George in the standings, despite not being a Lewis fan. Lewis n Merc's struggle came as a surprise to me. I'm enjoying Max v Charles and am not bothered with Lewis & Merc not being at the front.

    • @friktionrc
      @friktionrc 2 года назад +1

Major difference being that Seb was mostly treated as a number 1 driver (multi21 / “not bad for a number 2 driver” ring any bells?) for years whilst at RedBull and his wins were definitely a result of the car, which is what people are now saying about Hamilton.
The problem is, everyone is mudslinging and not realising that no one in the history of formula 1 has ever won a race driving the slowest car. Similarly team orders and team tactics have been around since the 50s (and probably before🤷‍♂️)….there’s a famous incident where in the mid 1950s, Peter Collins, stopped and got out and gave his car to Manuel Fangio (whose own car had broken down) to be able to finish the race and secure enough points to win the championship.
In today’s world of F1 there would be 2 arguments to this and I’ll use Hamilton as the example
      1) “Hamilton would never give up his car like that”……yup, but so what? Neither would Max, Russel, LeClerc, Rosberg, Schumacher, Mansell, Hill etc etc etc - usually it’s only Hamilton that gets a bad rap (pun intended lol)
      2) “Hamilton only gave up his car because he can tweet about it” …or words to that effect…in short what ever he does, there is some ulterior motive……and again I use the previous example of all the other drivers. Not a single one of them says what they really think as they’re all managed by their respective PR people. They always say stuff that people want to hear, not what they really mean or think. A great one at that was a Jenson Button…he was a press officer’s night mare as he always said things to avoid rustling feathers, but was always happy to chat to the press. ….as commented by Mark Webber when asked “what are you going to miss about Jenson when he retires?” To which Mark said “His press conferences” with a wink and a smile - a nod to the fact that Jenson is a PR’s wet dream - always does what he’s told infront of camera.

@@subarnosinha8042 my use of the examples of team orders , and what’s happened in the past was just that - examples. You said there were more comments excusing Hamilton’s lack of performance (even though it’s only been 4 races in a season that has 23 in total) and I was providing examples of where the same could be said of any driver including team orders and what’s happened in the past. In short - people seem to be quite happy to brush over other drivers, but for some reason Hamilton gets it in the neck…all the time. I’m not sure where you see so many comments excusing Hamilton’s lack of performance? If you are setting out your stall by random people in the comments of RUclips and other social media then sure, but if you are talking about Toto Wolff, then why shouldn’t he? I mean he’s not the only TP to defend his drivers? Using RB as an example, Marko and Horner have been doing it for years, both with Max / Checo as well as previous drivers. You say you see nothing but excuses for Hamilton, where as conversely all I am seeing is the exact opposite 🤷‍♂️ If you are happy to see him fail (perhaps because you will feel vindicated in your beliefs about him) that’s fine - it is you’re prerogative, however in the same way it is mine to not follow that belief I.e hoping one driver over all others fails spectacularly.
As for bouncing back, only time will tell, and I feel this will be directly related to any changes to the car…only time will tell on that front, however I would caveat that this isn’t the first season he has struggled in an F1 car, there were seasons with McLaren where he was mid-pack at best and the same with when he first joined Mercedes AMG. However, if he doesn’t bounce back this year, there is nothing to state he won’t next year or the year after. He is contracted for 3years, and I get the impression he’s only staying so he can win one more title and pass Schumacher’s tally of 7. Then he would have accomplished something no one else has done (not so much the number of titles but more so winning a championships in 3 (I think) major rule changes in F1 (and with 2 different teams). I remember reading somewhere that next year or year after, the rule makers are going to ‘relax’ the rules and one of the plans is to make the cars shorter in length and maybe a bit wider (so a hark back to the old 1980s F1 cars) - I’m not sure how the final designs will look but for now let’s agree to disagree and just enjoy watching this and the next few seasons unfold. 🙂🙏
