- UK Prime Minister Rishi Sunak cancelled a scheduled meeting with Greek Prime Minister Kyriakos Mitsotakis following a diplomatic dispute over the future of the Elgin Marbles.
The two leaders were expected to hold talks on Tuesday in London before Mr Sunak cancelled just hours beforehand.
Sky News Australia host Piers Morgan discussed Rishi Sunak “snubbing” the Greek Prime Minister over marbles with Presenter and Conservationist James Glancy.
“I’m not massively passionate about the marbles,” Mr Glancy told Sky News Australia host Piers Morgan.
“I think the biggest mistake was Rishi snubbing the Greek PM, that's what’s made this much bigger.”
They are not just marbles...they are the Parthenon sculptures have you ever seen them ? They are pure art and representation of a bunch of western values and architecture that laid the foundation for the rest of the architecture later on in the Western world. So not just random marbles!

Hi I am from Germany, I think the British Premier Minister Sunak is not qualified for his job, by behaving like a child towards the Greek prime minister. He behaves not like a British politician and is not diplomatic after this what we have seen. Democracy like they said in greece lives trough discuss topics even if they are unpleasant. He should really rethink his bad behaviour, even after a piece of Greek history is still stolen and lies now in a British museum….

The Greeks are NOT requesting EVERY antiquity back. They just want the Parthenon marbles, because its a national symbol. In fact, they have been requesting them back since the 1830's, when the state of Greece was established. The state-of-the-art Acropolis Museum clearly is the best home for the Parthenon marbles. Elgin obviously didn't save the marbles, because the Parthenon still looks amazing, and the marbles that did stay back are in pristine condition...

Having been to Athens and seen the spectacularly modern museum at the foot of the Parthenon, and the huge steps forward in the preservation of the Parthenon as a whole, as well as the many other archeological sites of Greece, I think it is time to have these back in their rightful place. I am proud to be British, but this spat stinks and makes us look petty, please give them back. Relationships are just as important as history.
I am proud to have studied British history and British culture and British literature in the original written language that I learned up to Proficiency level.
All this because British people always had clear minds and moral logic to deal with the world, and they left a legacy to be envied for generations. That is why the British people support the return now, it is logical and moral.

England has no culture. Most items in our museums belong to other countries
They don't have a great history. They were looters and marauders of the indigenous people of the world.
When the museum first came about, it was an object of prestige. It should be a grand building which would house ancient and exotic pieces of art from many far-away places; a symbol of national power and success in the world. Now, the museums in Greece, mostly exhibit national (Greek) pieces and are thematically differentiated based on historical periods or spesific localities. This kind of museum however, came much later.
Those who are against returning artifacts (not just Greek pieces) claim that at the time of acquisition, artifacts were left exposed to errosion, disregarded and sometimes actively destroyed and so they were in fact rescued and kept safe. Moreover, since the British museum is now 270 years old, some British folk understandably, feel it is a part of their own national history and so are afraid that if they give one piece, they will eventually be forced to give them all back.
They should give everything back to everyone who requests it. Colonialism is over. I would like to hear someone in 2023 seriously making an argument that they belong to England, only to be cancelled as a racist fossil

As a Greek and big fan of English history (one of the most impressive in human history), I am sure they will soon reconsider and give the marbles back to Greece. We owe a lot of our modern history to the English philhellenes of the 19th century, who would be shocked by the position of their modern successors. Someone like Mr Sunak, whose ancestors were most probably colonial subjects to the Empire, should know better.
EXPECTING KUNAK TO UNDERSTAND THE MEANING OF THE PARTHENON SCULPTURES???
To us Greeks it's not just "marbles". That's what others call them or see in them. To us it's our history, our identity, our pride, our inheretence. THAT's what makes it so important to us, and yes, the Brittish governemnt messed up BIG time on this one.

This guy in the middle has los his marbles. It’s one thing to lend precious items to other countries such as Crown Jewels and another thing to keep Greek sculptures that were originally stolen from Greece. There is no excuse, previously the UK used the excuse that the Greek museum is not up to standard to keep the marbles. Greece has now a new state of the art museum, I’ve been there and the British PM cannot use that excuse.

Greeks had no saying to the matter, in fact they were continuously denied their culture, by being subjects to some of the most atrocious behaviors during the colonization of the Ottoman Empire. Modern Greece day Greece is in perfect position to display the Parthenon sculpture in their birth place. The Parthenon is the birthplace of Democracy, one of Greeks greatest output to the world, part of their cultural heritage. Denying their return means further deny of the Greek people’s cultural Heritage. And weather conditions, the Pentelic marble is not meant for London’s humid weather either. They are better restored in Athens where they are originated from. 💀🤣
