- Hey guys! Welcome back to the channel!
The aim in today's episode is to bring the revs way down at highway speeds! To do that we'll be fitting a V8 5th gear to this Defender TD5 gearbox and we'll also be fitting a reconditioned LT230 Transfer box with a Discovery 1 Ratio!

For a working Defender it might be too tall. What I did on mine, as I'm running on 33 inch tyres, is just changed the 5th gears to V8 ones but the transfer box is best to remain 1.4. Its a nice upgrade for sure. Cheers.
Lovely video as always. Watching here from Sri Lanka. I believe after England and not sure about Africa, Sri Lanka has the most number of running condition defenders. Every time I get on my wheels, I never miss spotting defender before reaching home. I am looking at buying defender 90 and already have inspected few. May be I can get some advice from you later. Keep up the techi work.

I enjoy watching your builds, but been notice you've been using too much sealant on the gaskets. A tip it's to lay down a bead of sealant, and then spread it out with a finger using a glove.
Now they are two very interesting mods to do on the R380 gearbox. Another great video from all at the 'Juice' team.

Have just done this with my TD5. Had the 1.2 installed years ago, and had the V8 0.7 5th gear installed 2 months ago. It should have come from the factory like this from the start!!
Have you done it on a standard td5 or remapped one?
@@jacklyall3456 I have a BAS remap to Disco TD5 spec, no egr, no cat and no centre box.

Great video. I just bought a td5 2002 yesterday so how do I know this is a R380? Some people say if R is below 5th it is and others say if its got a shorter back housing etc. I believe there was 4 types of R380

Trying to work out the same for my TD5. Im debating sticking with the 1.4 and going V8 5th as I have 33s and tow. Any thoughts?
What sort of mpg gains can be expected from dropping the revs by that much on a 300tdi
Any chance you can do a video about lookng for play in the drive line? I have TD5 and if i go between forwards and reverse there is lots of slop in the drive line that i can't find so im suspecting it might be in the gearbox to transferbox link?

Yup, love my NAS defender that comes with the 1.2 tranny already from the factory. Question, what are your thoughts about doing a Cummins 4bt 3.9liter diesel, R2.8 cummins or doing 4.6l rover v8 conversions?

What is fuel economy like with mod?
err 70mph, that's 3 points and £100 fine at least.
Sadly soon all combustion cars and trucks including classics will be banned from public streets in entire EU and Scandinavia :-(
In Germany the Green Peoples Party gave order to shorten fuel supply from 2025
on by reducing all conventional fuel stations to only one state operated central gas station per city or county. Car washs will be forbidden too because they are climate killers, now they want to slow down all the gas station pumps from 20 litre per minute to 2 litre per minute...From 2027 on in the EU certain car spare parts will be banned too....as exhaust systems, turbo chargers and even some engine and gearbox oils...California and New York will do the same from 2027 on.... So no investments should be done in oil burning cars any longer....They even created a new kind of crime here, called emissions and smoke crime.!!! (BABVVEN & TEBBVEN & BEFVO laws)!!!
Can you do the gear mod only and not bother with the transfer box but still get lower rpm’s at the higher end?
Yes, certainly can - it’ll reduce the top gear by 5% - most effective with a lower ratio transfer box though

Remember, there's just asmuch silicone gloop squeezed out on the inside ov the box as the outside.. that poor old oil pump...!
UPDATE: having driven over 500 miles already, immediate improvement in road noise and fuel economy. A stage 1 or 2 remap is on the horizon though to restore hill climbing 😂
Do you get a high ratio 5th gear for LT77?
Yes there’s a kit for the LT77 too, the gear drops the revs by 200rpm on the LT77
