How to practice jazz standards - Autumn leaves - Major section
Do you want different ways to practice jazz standards that develop all of the fundamental skills you need to truly improvise?
Of course we start by memorising small sections of music that we could call vocabulary but as we begin to internalise these elements, we truly develop our ear/finger coordination as well as giving ourselves the best chance of hearing something meaningful to play.
So, I will share with you the different ways I have learnt from my own experiences as well as studying the methods of some of the great jazz improvisation teachers, including Bobby Shew and Hal Galper…
The bonus of practicing this way is you get to choose what you want to practice!
Simply listen to your favourite player, identify a cool sounding part of the solo, work out what they did through analysis and then practice in in a goal setting fashion and do so in a way where you will just hear it!

Coming back to playing and you have given me some online structure to succeed. Thanks!
I recently retired and took up jazz guitar (sorry, no trumpet). I was having trouble with improvisation so my teacher, who recently discovered your method, suggested that I try your jazz etudes approach. It’s made a big difference for me as I create my lines with my ears rather than plug-and-play licks.
Great to hear Andrew.
Another outstanding lesson! Ive been working on section 1 of this lesson for 3 weeks just trying to really learn the chords 🤦♂️ Ive been trying (and failing) to learn jazz for years but sadly am only just realising that unless you are prepared to sit and do some serious amount of work you won’t ever improve. I could easily spend a year on this lesson alone. i’ll be purchasing for sure 👍
Takes dedicated practice
Very nice!
Thank you! Cheers!
Interesting. The 3rd & the 7th are used to create shell chords.

Yes, they are integral to the identity of a chord. For example, Major 7th chords have a major third and a major seventh. Minor 7th chords have a minor third and a minor seventh. But if you already knew that, I apologise in advance.
How do I get to the links for further lessons and music

Would this chord progression work well on tenor sax?
