When I was 15 1/2 my father bought me a dune buggy with a blown motor. I ordered the parts from JC Whitney, and dad paid the bill. It seemed like forever before my parts arrived, but when they finally showed up, I started my rebuild. Two weeks later I had it complete and running. I was still 3 months away from getting my license, but we lived on a farm, so I got lots of wheel time before I was legal to go on the highway. I learned so much from that experience. Thanks Dad. That was all in 1976.

THE BEST Harley motor machine and rebuild is connecting to the Dragonman in Colorado Springs.... Make a road trip to see the coolest war museum, and machine gun range around.
Just a few thoughts... If there is enough side play in the primary chain that you can remove it without pulling the compensator AND clutch hub, replace the chain. Side note, I think the bolt for the clutch hub is left handed thread. That motor is a cheap knock-off. Fixing it is probably a waste of money unless someone like Craig is willing to do the labor for free and Hillbilly provides the parts. Personally, I think he would be better off with a certified HD rebuilt motor. Drain plug on the primary cover (depending on year) may be a tapered thread. If so, do not overtighten or you will crack the case. Tightening down the head bolts involves tightening to a specific torque, marking the bolt and taking it another 1/4 or 1/2 turn. That stretches the bolt, so they should be replaced for reassembly. Be sure to flush both the oil tank and all oil lines. Hillbilly may not like this, but long term reliability comes with not going crazy with performance parts. Runout on the crank wheels is CRITICAL. If you don't know what you are doing, leave it to the pros! I love you and Hillbilly, but for the sake of a reliable good running machine I would suggest you farm out the rebuild to a shop that knows what it is doing. JMHO.

Throw in a made-in-Wisconsin S&S crate engine of about any size you want, they are designed as Harley replacement engines. I’m know very little about the Harley engines but I do enjoy trying to understand the whys and what furs of different designs. Interesting thing about these is because the rod is made for both cylinders, they don’t evenly offset each other as the two pistons go up and down. You end up with pressure then vacuum then pressure inside the crankcase as the engine rolls over. Lots of jokes about Harleys leaking oil but the crankcase (and other) gaskets take a beating, gettin pushed back and forth as the engine runs. The vent for the air to go in and out isn’t just open all the time either, I think those flat spring valves you noticed are part of the PCV system. I think some of them even require the vent be timed with the crank! It’s way different than most of the stuff you guys work on and know about. If you decide to build this one up, get some good instructions and follow them closely, don’t assume anything or it will bite you! Good luck whatever you decide. It’s still a cool bike and worthy of being put together right. 👍 I think the flat black is a cool look, kinda ratty but that sorta fits HillBilly I think he would agree. BTW, do you know why it has a bell hangin under it? 🤔
🌺Happy Birthday Adlee! Yes bike needs new paint! Hillbilly looks 10 years younger with his new clean cut look. Awesome dynamic between Hillbilly, Robbie and Demri. 🤙🏻
That motorcycle looks like a 1996 Rolls-Kinardly springer. Rolls down one hill, Kinardly make it up the next. I was figuratively crying when you were talking about taking stuff apart as a child and not getting it back together with that rust bucket Toyota body on the lift in the background. Well played.
As someone who also just recently had their bike motor rebuild I suggest taking a look at S&S cycle. Their parts are very well built and they also have the option to buy complete motors. Hope this helps. Also candy apple red would look awesome
The motorcycle lifts from Harbor Freight are just fine really. You just can't leave it pumped up all the time, put in the safety lock and lower it onto that if you're going to keep it up for long. Also, you need to upgrade the wheel clock. Harbor Freight has a good one that will mount right on and then you'll be all set.
I feel if you are going to paint the bike, I would let Hill Billie pick the color, being it's his bike. I love how Robby admits that he doesn't know anything about the motor, but that doesn't stop him from working on it. Keep the videos coming!!
One trick I have used to help kids learn to ride a bike is this: Have them stand on the side of the bike. You, the parent, grabs one of the handle bars. Then rotate your wrist to move the bike to side to side. This shows the kids that by the to show then that by turning their wrist, they can counteract the lean. Give it a try, and let me know how this trick works out for you.
Like I posted on the previous video: Don't even think about rebuilding that Ultima. You want a big V-Twin, go to S&S and decided how much horsepower, and how much ya wanna spend. The V111 is a beast. Or find yourself a decent used 80" EVO to stick in her. Or... ya can drive or fly into SE Michigan and buy my 1993 FLHS and ride it home. I'll let it go for a lot less than sourcing a good V-Twin. And for a bit more, I'll toss in a real bike lift (Direct Lift), smaller lift, stand, and a whole bunch of OEM and aftermarket parts. I'm 72, and I haven't ridden it much in the past four years. It needs to find a good home and someone who'll ride/enjoy it.
I don't disagree, but it was a free bike and I doubt Hillbilly has deep pockets. Ultima sells every part for that thing and so its likely the cheapest way to go and I suspect Hillbilly can handle it. Heck, Ultima should just give them the parts for advertising.
I learned to ride two wheels on an 1979 Suzuki JR50. My Dad made a set of training wheels from lawn mower wheels and angle iron. So cool to make those training wheels!
You likely have them done and on the bicycle. But you are better to take off the pedals and let her just use her feet to hold herself up and walk/run on the bike. She will learn to balance faster than with training wheels. Edit: Assuming that with the E part of the Ebike turned off the bike can still roll. Otherwise get her a regular bike first and pull those pedals off. Likely one or two days to learn.
The ebike is a problem. You’re trying to teach your kid to run before they walk. Plus with those training wheels in the center like that, she could easily run over her leg if her foot comes off the pedals. I’ve found that the best way is to start with 2 training wheels, then remove one so they still can lean to one side if they get in trouble. I think a lot of parents put the training wheels on, then wait for the child to tell them when they want them off. You need to remove the training wheels once you, the parent, thinks they’re ready.
Strip the bike down to frame clean and if needed re powder coat the frame. Paint the tins and bags, and lastly drop a new motor in the bike. I think I would look at one of Harleys stock motors. I never felt like I needed more then my of Heritage had. And I would also go Fuel injected where you have so much elevation change when riding in Utah.

Yepper I think your going to replace both pistons and I'm willing to bet that your going to have replace the crankshaft and rods not including the camshaft and lifters.
Here's a tip Harleys have different length bolts on the Primary cover and else where. Get a piece of cardboard draw the cover and push the screws into the cardboard it in the proper placement. you don't want to run a long screw into a blind hole you'll bust a case. Change the primary chain tensioner while your in there they're only good for 50k miles. Don't forget the lock tight when you reassemble.
I built one of those when I was 16 and here it is, 40 years later, and it’s still running. I bought a ‘59 panhead from a swap meet it came in 3 milk crates and a frame. Super simple things to work on. 100+ year old technology. Not a fan of Harley at all, but they are easy to fix.
That first piece was the primary cover and to fill the oil you take off the derby cover which is the large round cover on the primary cover you can do the inspection cover but most do the derby cover.
Lol training wheels, my friends, three year old jumped on it, and started riding like a madman. It was crazy how fast is starting to lean into the turn.
Craig has that revtec motor he and Sean pulled for the harbor freight swap hanging around. I think we need to see him do a a motorcycle road trip from PA to UT with a spare motor in a side car or trailer....
I had my driver licence suspended due to an cognitive impairment so I bought a E bike to get around locally. Well, it's been over 50 years since I rode a bike. I must have fallen well over a dozen times until I read a uTube video from an experienced rider. He said he rides fast but if he rides slow so he falls so he said keep your speed up and stop fast. Works for me. I have been a car guy since I got my licence at 16 years old so I enjoy watching your videos and also Matt's. Great job on your derby races
Older Harleys drink a lot of oil, fill the tank, check the oil. Going to start it check the oil, you've just detailed the Harley, check the oil! Well at least Ashley was happy, now she needs helmet, and knee pads and elbow and gloves. Happy birthday Ashley. Everyone have a good week and God bless amen. Check the oil......😢

Good morning I am looking forward to this build series i know you guys will make sure and honor Rick and Christy by getting the Motorcycle back running.
Your best move you could make at this time is take the crank to the harley shop, along with the cylinders and heads. They can rebuild the crank and install new rods, bearings, pistons and rings, hone the cylinders, and fix the heads and valves if needed. Tou should also replace the main bearings, maybe clutch if needed, and a manual and put it back together, and ride it. Thom
That solder stick kit is awesome Robby thank you for telling us about it. I'm definitely going to buy the kit. Also good job on the training wheels. Thanks for the video and thank you Demri for doing a great job at filming.

I think the flat black is a cool look, kinda ratty but that sorta fits HillBilly I think he would agree. BTW, do you know why it has a bell hangin under it? 🤔
My vote is for a new engine it's going to get you back on the road quicker and great video keep up the good work God bless from GA and stay safe
Agreed, get it done while there's still time to ride this year. Even if it's just a stocker for now, then rebuild the monster and drop it in later.
I’m wondering what’s going through Rick and Christie’s minds right now as they watch this. Holly crap!
Nice training wheels. Glad you have them a few inches off the ground to help with learning to balance.
I'm thinking you should just replace the motor Or ship it off to Craig and see if he can rebuild it
As someone who also just recently had their bike motor rebuild I suggest taking a look at S&S cycle. Their parts are very well built and they also have the option to buy complete motors. Hope this helps. Also candy apple red would look awesome
Replace the engine with the one that came with it from the factory.
What happened
@@missingremote4388 Hillbilly ran it without oil
The motorcycle lifts from Harbor Freight are just fine really. You just can't leave it pumped up all the time, put in the safety lock and lower it onto that if you're going to keep it up for long. Also, you need to upgrade the wheel clock. Harbor Freight has a good one that will mount right on and then you'll be all set.
Need to do an LS swap. I'm sure you can fit a V-8 into that Harley... 😁
Hell now we’re talking a hillbilly boss hog . V-8 power . Lol
No!! A Springer Softail frame cannot support that big of an engine. Harley Davidson’s are V-twins for a reason,
I feel if you are going to paint the bike, I would let Hill Billie pick the color, being it's his bike. I love how Robby admits that he doesn't know anything about the motor, but that doesn't stop him from working on it. Keep the videos coming!!
That ground up metal parts is going to take some flushing through all the oil ports etc, good luck with that 😬
One trick I have used to help kids learn to ride a bike is this: Have them stand on the side of the bike.
It needs to find a good home and someone who'll ride/enjoy it.
then they would have to start over! Once is probably enough...
I don't disagree, but it was a free bike and I doubt Hillbilly has deep pockets. Ultima sells every part for that thing and so its likely the cheapest way to go and I suspect Hillbilly can handle it. Heck, Ultima should just give them the parts for advertising.
Good luck on the 'V' twin, excellent learning experience!!! And those training Wheels I bow to your superior Talent. Great Job.
Hillbilly deserves a brand new engine as long as he gets "Got Oil?" tattooed on his forearm.
Lol
I learned to ride two wheels on an 1979 Suzuki JR50. My Dad made a set of training wheels from lawn mower wheels and angle iron. So cool to make those training wheels!
You likely have them done and on the bicycle. But you are better to take off the pedals and let her just use her feet to hold herself up and walk/run on the bike. She will learn to balance faster than with training wheels.
Edit: Assuming that with the E part of the Ebike turned off the bike can still roll. Otherwise get her a regular bike first and pull those pedals off. Likely one or two days to learn.
People are riding bikes just fine. And they started on training wheels stfu
walk with e-bike ? thats just a grazy accident to happen.
Hillbilly was actually smiling, while working on his Harley.
Dam it , I didn’t even see it .
Absolutely Great Video Y'all ! Super Dad of the Decade too ❤
I vote for sending ALL the pieces out for a Special Rebuild to a 130plus
I’m betting Hillbilly likes working on his Harley as much as riding it.
If you are going to own one you have to
1 hour riding, 100 hours repairing!! Have fun! Greetings from old Germany 🇩🇪
@@W.F.Fischerwith my Harley the relationship was the other way round. Best bike I ever owned, until some car driver separated me from it, killing the bike and putting me in intensive care for a couple of weeks.😢 Greetings from old Bavaria 😂
When I was 14 or15 bought a Yamaha 250 basket case for $100 took me all winter but I got that bike going it was a blast. That was 50 yrs ago so don't mind me chuckling sometimes when I watch you guys. Great stuff for an old backyard mechanic. Thanks for the video. P.S. you guys are really good at what you do.
Box it all up and send it to Craig!
Loved seeing the look on Hillbillies face when he received the news that the bike was his so sad to see you all had ongoing issues on the ride home it was such an amazing adventure. Love watching the bike being pulled down for its rebuild and definitely love to see Hillbillies choice of colour for his new ride
9:10 What size tap do you use for a cotter pin?
lol
Yepper I think your going to replace both pistons and I'm willing to bet that your going to have replace the crankshaft and rods not including the camshaft and lifters.
don't feel bad Hillbilly , I had all the same issues with my ultima engine too 😪But its fast when its running hehehe!
Biking down from Canada this week and would love to stop in if welcome.
YES to painting the Harley. My choice would be black, with some restrained gold pin striping on the tanks.
Hell yes brother paint it like them old school low riders color . Go all out for hillbilly candy paint and flakes and layers and colors and all
Happy Birthday to baby girl 😊
That first piece was the primary cover and to fill the oil you take off the derby cover which is the large round cover on the primary cover you can do the inspection cover but most do the derby cover.
THERE'S LOCKING POSTS ON BIKE LIFTS ITS THOSE THREADED KNOBS ON THE SIDES!!! LOL!
This is one of those years and makes that will bring you up to speed on your harley wrenching skills quick.
I love that solder stick. It makes dependable wiring connections easy
Springer soft tail, the best looking front end you could have, painted midnight blue and silver !
yes would love to see it all painted up do a black with green pearl or a brandy wine red with metallic
Rick & Christy may be crying at this video. However, the results of the ride toward home, in no way diminishes their generosity.
Paint the Harley! Pink with metal flake and embedded rhine stones placed in heart shapes. Then put a horn on the front with a rainbow in the back. I’m sure hillbilly would love it! Otherwise do a blue tinted chrome
You should build a Sidecar for Adlee's bike! And yes, paint the fenders, gas tanks, and saddle bags.
for me it's kinda funny because I work in a repair shop similar to Robby's yet here I am enjoying his content working on cars or repairing motorcycles
I had a 1990 prelude with 426000 miles, used no oil & ran perfect until a drunk ran a red lite. That was 10yrs ago & i still miss that car
Great training wheels Robby. Better than you would get from the stores. A Daddy's love for sure.
When you paint it - I think it should have a little RLN emblem on the back fender.
Excellent patience Homie 😮Really “Jugs”😂✌️💛
I'd first bought a manual for the scooter. 2 those cranks can be a bear to split. And don't go and scrap that engine. Did I hear that it's been stroked ?😊
I think paint the Harley the Blue for the Toyota ! Robbie learns fast when the Boss/Wife says one thing and you say another or the same thing in a different way you just agree with her! Makes life easier! 😂! And your a Great Dad Also!!! My kids are in their mid twenties now so i barely see them, so enjoy all the time you have with them!!! They grow up to fast!!!
Another person would of scooped the parts up and pushed the project into a corner.
But,Robbies' friendship with Hillbilly trumps that scenario. Robbie and his sweetheart
are truly wonderful people! Replacement motors are the way to go!
Oh Robbie with every good deal there is a catch
Been watching you two grow been wonderful following from the early days
Live in the bush in Oz and appreciate what you do
Paint it for sure but I suggest metal flake silver or bronze to remind Hillbilly to check the oil so this doesn't happen again
Cool now I know what a Harley motor looks like inside🎉🎉🎉
Good job also on the training wheels for the ladybug👊
