- Sir Fred created this ballet as an 80th birthday present for the Queen Mum. Here is the pas de deux from the opening night, featuring Michael Baryshnikov and Lesley Collier.
As far as I know, this is the only part of the ballet that was ever broadcast. Does anyone know of a complete version?
Superb dancing and partnering Collier and Barishnikov at their best
Never thought I'd ever see this -- fantastic! And one of hte greatest things of Collier's ever put on film. they're both glorious in this, but she's -- well, we NEVER see her look like THIS!
beautiful choreography! Ashton had an eye for aesthetics.
Truly art in motion, extraordinary. This is the best couple still to have done this pas de deux
Ashton used to create his ballets on the people who were dancing them, so with all his ballets the first cast are always the best as the choreography suits that person's shape and style
Interesting piece of footage and amazing the number of people that commented that they were there. I remember reading somewhere that this piece was arguably the best that was ever set on Baryshnikov. I, too, would love to see the entire piece with him in it.
Whoever owing the original tape of this must do a restoring to make it available on DVD. I would be first in the line to buy it. Just perfect.
Thanks for sharing!
How wonderfully done was it. So so beautiful.
This is one of the best pieces I've seen,
Thank you for this, Quillerpen!
Incredibly beautiful without being austintatious and desinged for trickts, just art.
Yes, this was recorded and broadcast on that night, but Ashton only allowed the pas de deux to be shown (quite understandable for a brand new work).
I was told that the whole ballet would be shown after the Queen Mum died, but this never happened, so whether the Beeb still have it is anyone's guess.
I too prefer this setting - the style and colour of the set match the delicacy of the chroeography.
quillerpen I’m so sad the ending lift got cut off!
first time l saw misha live was in 1975 at his italian debut ,was with fracci in giselle ,when did his second act variation people couldnt belive what were seeing ,and me too.
Rachmaninoff makes this "Pas de deux" a real rhapsody of dreams.
Collier took some beating when dancing Ashton she lived the Ashton choreography and was there with Ashton when he created so many of his works
@vielsu Yes, sorry about that - I wish I (or someone else) had a better copy but this is all I've got
Year of this ?? espectacular
4th August 1980; performed for the Queen Mother's 80th birthday
Tetsuya Kumakawa recorded the whole ballet with his own company in 2006 or so. He does a decent job with the pyrotechnics but it lacks a whole lot of flavor, as usual.
Must be 1980 if it was the Queen Mums 80th
Enthralling, shame about the lack of clearness though.
see my previous comment - I'd love to have a cleaner copy to offer you - and even the whole ballet!
She's such a beautiful Dancer,my favourite.
the whole thing is here, in eight parts - with McRae and Osipova :) ruclips.net/p/PLSXTf-xTCIhqoDb8-t8ItZD8rJ9XxZ_KT
Thanks - i'll check that out!
it's interesting to contrast and compare :)
I think Steve McCrae is the one that most closely approaches Baryshnikov, with Tetsuya Kumakawa a close behind.
