  • Sir Fred created this ballet as an 80th birthday present for the Queen Mum. Here is the pas de deux from the opening night, featuring Michael Baryshnikov and Lesley Collier.
As far as I know, this is the only part of the ballet that was ever broadcast. Does anyone know of a complete version?

Never thought I'd ever see this -- fantastic! And one of hte greatest things of Collier's ever put on film. they're both glorious in this, but she's -- well, we NEVER see her look like THIS!

Truly art in motion, extraordinary. This is the best couple still to have done this pas de deux

Ashton used to create his ballets on the people who were dancing them, so with all his ballets the first cast are always the best as the choreography suits that person's shape and style

Interesting piece of footage and amazing the number of people that commented that they were there. I remember reading somewhere that this piece was arguably the best that was ever set on Baryshnikov. I, too, would love to see the entire piece with him in it.

Whoever owing the original tape of this must do a restoring to make it available on DVD. I would be first in the line to buy it. Just perfect.

Yes, this was recorded and broadcast on that night, but Ashton only allowed the pas de deux to be shown (quite understandable for a brand new work).
I was told that the whole ballet would be shown after the Queen Mum died, but this never happened, so whether the Beeb still have it is anyone's guess.
I too prefer this setting - the style and colour of the set match the delicacy of the chroeography.

Tetsuya Kumakawa recorded the whole ballet with his own company in 2006 or so. He does a decent job with the pyrotechnics but it lacks a whole lot of flavor, as usual.

Must be 1980 if it was the Queen Mums 80th

I think Steve McCrae is the one that most closely approaches Baryshnikov, with Tetsuya Kumakawa a close behind.
