In this video I want to introduce you to the true comfrey (Symphytum officinale) aka knitbone, boneset, common comfrey or quaker comfrey: This plant is part of the family of forget-me-nots (Boraginaceae) and can be used for its very powerful medicinal properties and can serve us as a wild edible in genuine survival situations - please make sure to check out this identification video fully to learn how to identify and harvest this wonderful plant and to understand its proper use and application.

This was just what I needed! I was planning to go to the river to try to find comfrey, as I read it grows near water. But on an impulse I turned off the public path to a hidden patch of land that abuts allotments in one side & a park on the other. At some point someone used it as an allotment. I have found flower bulbs growing in a row there, strawberries hidden by high grass, a large cherry tree. Today I wanted to check the progress of the cherries. The first thing I noticed was a large clump of green covered with bell-shaped purple flowers. I remembered I read comfrey grows near fruit trees. Using this video I was able positively to identify it as comfrey. Now I can start harvesting & drying leaves to make the salve I want. I'm happy that I don't have to buy the dried leaves online. So much more satisfying to collect & dry the leaves myself & make the salve from the bounty around me.

So what is your use of the leaves then? Just for medicinal tea or more for ointments or so?
Grows well here in Anchorage Alaska.
It seems that work well if you're getting a cold to make a tea out of the leaves. Boiling up a large handful of the chopped up leaves and then drinking the liquid and eating the leaves like spinach seem to help kick a cold very quickly.
Hi Joe, thanks for the comment. I can imagine that, after all the plant does contain several essential oils (which, I am guessing, soothes the cold). I'd still be careful when it comes to using comfrey though, exuberant use can cause severe harm to the body.

@@RathwulvenBushcraft never made the tea or cooked greens once whenever I got a cold. It was not a thing I repeated over even a few days. Seem to help tastes nasty though.

Question if we apply this comfrey to the skin would still be harmful to any of our organs?
It is best to consult a chemist in this regard if you really want a clear answer regarding the impact. But a single application on the skin certainly won’t cause immediate organ failure. 🙂
And also consider allergies etc - your GP can advise you accordingly.

Hello I have a question. Is the plant toxic for dogs? I have read this somewhere.
Hi Holger. Yes, it certainly is. The pyrrolizidine alkaloids contained in comfrey are very toxic in general - for us humans as well as for dogs, horses or other animals. There is also an interesting study conducted by Yeong, Clark and Waring during which rats have been fed a diet consisting of 8% comfrey leaves: Those rats developed liver cancer and died.
Rathwulven Bushcraft I am very confused, I hear some people use it in soups as comfrey has protein content. How come they feed their livestock with comfrey herb 🌿 if it’s toxic 🤔? Please help us
@@queilyyenner6399 it’s not toxic to certain herbivores, I feed it to my rabbits as a snack. Has Beirut’s for them. I would never ingest it myself though.
@@queilyyenner6399I do too ,I put it in soup everyday, vegetable soup I use the roots. They said the same thing about B-17. They said the same thing about soursop leaves. Anyting that cures the body I guess it's bad to them😮
I found boneset young in the summer but was afraid to touch it, looks really spiky.
It isn't - just give it a try next spring, it feels kind of like a cat tongue. :D
