Hey Matt. I reviewed this video again because I have a field just full of yellow blooms that I thought were goldenrod. When I jumped off my quad and waded in i noticed many plant with yellow flowers, NOT GOLDENROD! But plenty of goldenrood among them. Turns out, i have ragwort and goldenrod growing up side by side. It is easy to distinguish between the two. Ragwort hs flower clusters at the tio but the flowers are much bigger than goldenrod and each on its own stem and look like daisy.

Here in SW Indiana there are multiple species of goldenrod, they all vary quite a bit, some so much, you might think they are different plant species. There is a very tall species that can be 6-7 ft. tall and has very different flowering stems that the flower clusters are more wider and spread out, almost opposite shape forms as the smaller goldenrods. It has more flower structures but they are on longer more widely spread ,spaced out overall upper flower stem structures. We have a couple mid sized height species, around 4-5 ft. and they have more tighter flower heads but one can have a clusters of flowers spaced out along the terminal stem. There is a much shorter type also that is short and overall more tighter formed with shorter stems and leaves more compact and dense. The flower heads are also smaller and shorter and almost roundish and globular forms when its a good year and plants have had plenty of moisture. Goldenrod has a unique flower scent, and the leaves have a fruity scent also. Really interesting to know about the ragweed leaves!! I hadn't ever read that anywhere. I will try that next year, its way too late this year, the ragweeds are way gone past the bloom point here. Thanks for all the info. I always liked goldenrod and we grew a bunch of different kinds at our flower, veg and grape farm as we cut goldenrod for florists to use. A couple of the species have flower heads shapes and colors that lend themselves greatly to floral arrangements. I need to collect leaves and flowers right now before they are gone as its already getting cool here and the plants are quickly moving on to rest phase. I kept putting off collecting it last year as i had so much distracting me and it was too late by the time i was thinking about doing it.

Great video! I love the suggestion of a ragweed leaf & goldenrod flower tincture combo. Question: when you said the dose is 30 to 60 drops, do you mean each time you use it? Or is that the total limit for a full day? Is your drop roughly 1mL (eyedroppers vary) or some other unit? Thank you so much for a well researched, calmly presented and super informative explainer of this abundant wildflower.
It's unfortunate that goldenrod tincture tastes like laundry soap. 😂 However I still use it. Want to try ragweed tincture for my son's allergies and it's at the right stage now in my yard. I don't have any alcohol though. My question is whether or not drying it before tincturing in the future will hurt the potency of the final product? Furthermore could you use 80 proof vodka instead of everclear? Or is the super high alcohol content absolutely necessary? I could freeze some of the ragweed until I have alcohol so it's more fresh like at least than dried if you think drying first isn't ideal. It may even help the actives come out by breaking the cells open during freezing. What you think on all that?
Drying it and using a lower proof alcohol is just fine. In fact once its dried you actually want to use a lower alcohol content. I use about 100 proof with dried herbs so that the water soluble constituents get extracted as well.

This is a great video about goldenrod! Thank you for sharing this information. Loved learning that they are perennial.
Native Americans used plants for so many uses. Most likely we are just learning so much information that was lost when so many native Americans were killed or misplaced. Good video
its amazing how much they knew... they must have experimented with everything ... makes me wonder how many died experimenting with different plants and parts of the plants and to make their own conclusions with out modern science techniques.. pretty amazing
Excellent informative video as always.
Had pollen allergy's my whole life. I stopped taking allergy medicine and switch to local raw honey(bees probably gathered a lot of pollen from golden rod!). Honey helped so much over last 3 to 4 years... Started taking Goldenrod tincture this year and 1st year after 41 years that I have had absolutely no spring allergy symptoms!!!
That's an awesome report! Thanks for commenting!
Very good. This restores my hope. Goldenrod is growing everywhere here in Vermont Im gonna harvest some today.
Thank you....always interesting and informative !!!
@@JH-th9th Thanks for watching!
Thank you. I let Goldenrod just grow in my front yard for the beautiful colors and I am told that Monarch Butterflies are very dependent of the pollen as they migrate in the fall. I'll definitely try the tincture and the tea.
You're the absolute best, i love your videos.
Ill have to check as I thought the yellow flower plant is ragweed aound me which I stay away from. Ive had bad allergies for over 40 years. Thank you for these needed teachings!
Great information! I just ran across your channel and I am so happy that I did. I will be binge watching to learn all I can now. My dogs search out goldenrod and eat their leaves all the time.
Mine do too!
Feral Foraging has a Golden Rod jelly video simply titled, “How to Make Goldenrod Jelly (144p)”.
I plan the try it this year.
You might like it.
Where can I find these medicinal recipes?😊
@@marymustaine8877 I gave the title and creator so you can do a search on RUclips. RUclips usually removes website links from posts due to potential virus attacks. Also, the video is for jelly not medicine.
I have found food recipes for fireweed (I live in the north, don't know if it grows down south ) can be made with goldenrod.
Goldenrod is Kentucky's state flower.
Another great video! Thank you Matthew.
Glad you enjoyed it, thanks for watching!
Love to see how much your channel has grown! Keep it up
I have boat loads at our cabin.. I use them in arrangements.. I'll have to start using some for these things you mentioned.
Great info! 2 questions: is it too late to tincture leaves of ragweed to infuse? Can it be either xommon ragweed or giant ragweed? We have both in MO. Thank you! Just recently found your channel. Impressed and looking forward to more!
In Winter the flowers are still interesting, as they turn to a Silvery gray..Our state flower for Nebraska 🐂😎
Excellent video! Perfect timing. I am on an herbal journey. Noticed these tall plants years ago, trying to figure out what they were. Last month I realized they were Golden Rod and you just confirmed it. Thank you.
Glad you found it helpful, thanks for watching!
Wow thank u! There was a lot more info in ur video that I havnt heard in other goldenrod videos on other channels. Thank u so much now I know why it has invaded my garden🙌
So informative!!!! Perfect timing!
Been looking for this all summer, within the past week it has popped up everywhere in the foothills of NC.
Does the golden rod smell? Thank you God bless you Maranatha
You dont want to take up the roots. Just trim the flower down half way. Take home and make tea with keaves and flowers. Ket them grow and spread the love by planting them everywhere ❤
Great video. I do believe I have goldenrod on my property. Ill try to make it a point to go seek it out. Ty for the great video
Just processed a ton of golden rod in MN. Tea, oils, and vodka.
This guy teaches me everything I know
Subscribed. I have that book and a few others as well. Nature provides answers, we just have to look.
Thanks for subscribing!
I wish you were in the southwest!! Your videos are very informative and interesting!!
It's great about technology, he can be across the world and it's like right in your hand. No need to be next door, or closer.
Consider showing Goldenrod and ragweed leaves next to each other. There will be a clear difference for the viewers. I did not know Goldenrod was so helpful to us. Thanks for the video. Why does the alcohol make a difference? Would water or oil work just as well?
This was great information, presented in an interesting way. There were several things I didn't know about goldenrod yet.
Thanks for watching! Glad you enjoyed it
Matthew, your knowledge is incredible. Thank you so much for sharing what you know.
Really Excellent Work your doing Mathew! I shared This video With my TCM herb school students so they can use more local available plants.
I thought i had ragweed growing near my house but its goldenrod! Going to make some tea for my alleriges now. Thank you!
I'm here in Louisiana and I just harvested some goldenrod a few minutes ago and I plan to make an extract, but I have a question about shortleaf pine or southern pine I heard most pines needles can be turned into a tea but not finding literature about short leaf pine needles in a tea...do you have any information about it
@@royorkesjr.8386 All of the pines are used similarly. Go for it
@@LegacyWildernessAcademy thanks buddy
Hello, I'm also in Louisiana. My grandmother made Pinetop tea for us as kids. She made it from pine trees that grew around us. I want to say the long ones.
@@tamakayatruong3548 thanks for that it's good to hear another Louisiana native that has experience with pine I'm gonna try short leaf pine and see how it works out
I've heard if the pine has 3 needles in the frond then its not to be ingested but 5 needle fronds are good.
Matthew, thank you for this video. I love your courses, too.
I would like to know more about using the roots. Can you speak about how you prepare them?
Thank you for your teachings, Matthew.
Thanks! I suffer from nasal issues I believe due to cat allergies. Last year I had surgery, it at least fixed my unknown fractures. But it was explained the nasal passage has turbinates which are like sausage casings and fill up due to allergies, blocking the airway. After surgery I could breathe so well but just a year later I’m back to extreme blockage. So it’s time for me to try some goldenrod, see if that helps. Thanks!
Oh my goodness!! I have always said golden rod was what made me sneeze, & have itchy eyes. Perhaps it ragweed after all. I always noticed the golden rod in bloom whenever my symptoms occur. Thank you so much for your video. Hello ftom NE Arkansas.
Really enjoying your teachings Matthew, excellent videos . Here in NE Texas I have Golden Rod growing in my back yard every year. Thanks for your tip, I have CKD and could maybe help.
Excellent as always
Thank you
Because of you I can use a lot of wild things going around the house. Thank you so much and keep making videos ❤
Will do, glad you're enjoying them!
It grows here in Montana.
I haven't seen them that tall. Goldenrod in Montana only grows about two feet tall.
@@alicerafferty9595That's because Montana has a shorter growing season ‼️
That's because Montana has a shorter growing season imagine that!
What is a safe dosage to take of goldenrod tincture? Thank you very much.
Dyes a nice yellow too
Add a little iron and it gives a gorgeous green as well!
Great video Matthew. I learned something new with the ragweed
Great video!
This is very comprehensive, thank you. You mentioned that if a person has an allergy to Chamomile they might have an allergy to Goldenrod as well. There's one thing that I never understood, I am fine when I drink Chamomile tea that I boughtg at the store but I get heartburn when I make tea from my homegrown dried German Chamomile. Perhaps someone can shed some light on this mystery.
I have been seeing the Golden Rod along the highways in NC and was wondering what was the name of these plants, and this video popped up thank you ❤
I just found your channel with this video, and had to sub because this is fascinating and so useful, thank you for sharing your knowledge and empowering us with it.
Thank you so much 💓 so helpful so glad I found your channel 🎉🎉
This is such an amazing video. I didn't know Golden Rod was in the Sunflower family. ❤❤❤
I live in Northern Michigan and there was so much Golden rid this summer
Thank you! You are an excellent teacher! I will be using your lessons in our homeschool science. God bless!
Awesome, glad to hear it! We homeschool as well
Wow…I need a tub full of this stuff! Where can I buy some already made until I can make this myself? 🤪
I agree I'm going to pick a whole bunch of it this time I thought I got a lot last year I had a two quart jar full of dry this time I'm going to tincher it!! Maybe a whole 1/2 gallon
Don't know of anyplace with it for sale already made into oil/salves, but you can buy herbs and make your own, which is half the fun anyway...You can try Mountain Rose Herbs. They sell alot of dry bulk herbs and seeds for them. Not sure if they have these or not but I've made several tinctures/salves with stuff I've gotten thru there. Excellent quality herbs.
Greetings from Croatia - Europe!
. The flower smells like honey, like summer!
So Perfect! I Just Saw Some In My Yard. Thanks For The Video!!!
Very informative, especially about the ragweed leaves (I'm about to look for your info on that, although I assume I'll have to wait until next season to gather them, since the ragweed is already blooming...) I'm in the northeast, but we certainly have goldenrod and ragweed, and my allergies have kicked in. Your tincture sounds like the perfect remedy. Thanks.
I tried to find video on ragweed (or other) tinctures but I haven't been able to identify one... any clues?
Hi! I actually have a video on ragweed. Here it is: ruclips.net/video/mtxAZKXTc_4/видео.html
Thanks!
Hi and thanks for all the information about goldenrod. How would it affect someone with an asthmatic reaction to allergens including cat and plants - not yet determined which, but gardening can bring it on, usually several hours after exposure. Would the astringency of goldenrod worsen the asthma?
Can you talk about Mugwort?
id like to see that one too.... i know its used as a remedy for poison oak.. crush the leaves and rub on the areas you got exposed to poison oak and supposedly it helps a lot
@brianbailey462 I haven't tried mugwort, but jewelweed is awesome for treating poison oak and poison ivy. I've used it for years.
I will have to keep my eyes open for Goldenrod. I'm not sure it grows in my area, but I do know Oregon grapes (they are plentiful) have the same active ingredients.
You do great work. Thank you friend.
Any help for digestive disturbances?
Great video! I love the suggestion of a ragweed leaf & goldenrod flower tincture combo. Question: when you said the dose is 30 to 60 drops, do you mean each time you use it? Or is that the total limit for a full day? Is your drop roughly 1mL (eyedroppers vary) or some other unit? Thank you so much for a well researched, calmly presented and super informative explainer of this abundant wildflower.
Thanks for watching! That's 30-60 drops per dose, multiple times throughout the day. I guess it would be about 1-3ml per dose.
@@LegacyWildernessAcademy thanks!
Thank you so very much for your video, very useful and helpful to know.Look forward to more of your videos.
Hey Matthew, learning a lot from Legacy Wilderness Academy classes. Thanks. Keep up the good work.😊 Have you ever heard of someone using Goldenrod tea as a nasal spray?
Not goldenrod specifically but I'm sure it would work. I haven't learned how to make herbal nasal sprays yet but that's definitely on my radar. I really want to get a nebulizer and start using herbs that way.
