I don’t think there has ever been a better sitcom actor than Carroll O’Connor. You can see why the director John Rich who helmed 81 episodes never missed an opportunity to zoom in on Archie and hold the shot. His facial expressions were comedic gold time and time again.
Itt looks like he lamost id lOL! SO hysterically funny! Did you notice when they are ont he back porch and if you watch closely, I think Rob Riener mis-tepped and hit Carol O'Connor in the shoulder because he went out of camera range and ad libbed' What are you DOING???!!!" That didn't look scripted to us! LOL!
"You're in the way! You're in the way, Edith! You're in the way!" "What do you want me to do?! Do you see a sneeze on this dial?!" "Do you want an enema?!" Great lines lol
I thought Sally was underrated as an actor and had great comedic timing. They all did but it was sometimes hard to get out from under the shadow that Carroll O'Connor and Jean Stapleton cast on that stage. Rob Reiner was great too.
@Dana-wq5tp I think that there are only 3 or 4 shows where the entire main cast received an Emmy. All In The Family was one of them. The Golden Girls was another, and I forget the rest 😁
One of the best episodes ever. I've watched it so many times I can almost say the dialogue from start to finish. Pure comedic gold by that wonderful group of performers! Nothing these days even compares.
I'm 40 but I love these wholesome, good humor, comedy of this time!!!! This the Jefferson's and Sanford and sons is my go to when I'm having a rainy lazy day
If I've said it once. I've said it a Thousand times. Hands down. The greatest Sitcom in Television history. Lock, Stock and Barrel. Nothing else is a close second. Every aspect of the making of this program, was nothing short of Genius.
I agree 100%. After Meathead and Gloria left the Show. The Storylines were not as good. Also. Archie kind of chilled out. This took an edge of the Show.
That look on Archie's (Carol's) face when Edith says out of the blue, "DO YOU WANT AN ENEMA?!" is prriceless- looks like he is trying NOT to laugh! :P!
Carroll O'Connor has said in numerous interviews that he based the Archie character on Jackie Gleason's Ralph Kramden but as the show evolved, he added so many nuances that it became very much his own creation.
Did you notice when they are ont he back porch and if you watch closely, I think Rob Riener mis-tepped and hit Carol O'Connor in the shoulder because he went out of camera range and ad libbed' What are you DOING???!!!" That didn't look scripted to us! LOL!
"what brand were they Edith?" "I don't know, it was a funny name." "Pocono's a funny name." "What's Funny about It!!" hahahah his expressions are genius!
You know, the key to great comedy is always timing. And the timing of the funny moments on All in the Family was impeccable. There was such great chemistry between Carroll O'Connor, Jean Stapleton, Rob Reiner & Sally Struthers. And that's why the show is still relevant and timeless today as it was during the '70s. Classic.
This one was one of the funniest! I only wish they had gone on a few seconds after everyone leaves -- the door opens and Mike brings Gloria back inside, telling her, "You can't go to the hospital! You're sick!!"
At 2:10 when Archie Mike and Edith tried to come through the doorway at once.that was not the only time that happened. The episode Archie Gets Branded is another one with that bit of slapstick.lol😂😂
HTat's RIGHT and RIGHT IS RIGHT< as ARchie would say, and let me tell you, ALL of mY family andI were like that- that is how to be :) because you can see, now 50 years later, when libs are allowed to take over there is chaos, no order and no law....even in govt. TRUMP 2024! TRUMP NOW OT SAVE US
Not so different today - just kept under the radar. Every 3-4 decades a Reagan or Trump will remind us Archie lives on…just not funny. Carroll O’Connor the absolute best. What a cast…and how they all continued with great success even after All In The Family!
Well, actually, someone in Gloria's situation shouldn't be anywhere outside in close contact with others, and especially around those with already compromised health. But, it is a funny line and her reaction is even more so.
This episode ranks in the Top Ten of AITF. Richard Stahl (amazing character actor) played the doctor. Doctor trying to identify symptoms of food poising asks Archie: Any lassitude? Archie: I don't think Edith put that in the stew, only the mushrooms. Doctor perplexed. This episode had all the characteristics of a Neil Simon play scene (frenzy and farce). The shot Archie got in the keister and the plan to sue 'those mushroom people' was icing on the cake.
I don't know exactly what season this is but the show was so top-notch and consistently funny for the first several years. Some of the plots were very quirky (like this one), which just added to its unique appeal. As a kid of the '70s who watched this show religiously, some things stand out compared to this day and age. Massive phone books 😂, dialing numbers on a corded phone, canned mushrooms (I wonder if fresh mushrooms were just not grown as extensively), and throwing cans in the trash instead of recycling. As for the last one, we did have a recycling center in town for paper and there was even briefly a machine where you could put aluminum cans in and get money for it. Also bottle deposits for soda.
This was real talent. Live audience so they had to hold their lines until the laughter died down a bit. No sitcom star has the talent to do this now except Steve Carell.
The unspoken backstory to AITF was Michael was essentially all alone out there and the Bunkers gave him a wife, family, and home. In a crazy sort of way, Archie got the son he thought Gloria was gonna be and Michael got the father he lost prematurely. AITF was an amazing series that was extremely well developed.
The arguing between them was of course necessary for the sitcom to work, but with my ex husband and his family, it was quite draining to witness heated disagreements. And, since my mother in law in particular was a very unfunny version of Archie, I was most glad to get rid of her and all her crabby, bigoted ugliness
that was awesome I enjoyed every second of that the trouble is we don't really know if Archie did get poison because the video got cut off its just so hysterical I love it
Archie starts to feel the pain in a psychological way because he's told what the Pocono mushroom can looked like. Had he not been told that, situation would've been resolved.
As funny as it was, they couldn't show the scene when they're all eating mushroom omelets, and once Archie after catching Gloria's cold, he sneezed, Edith, Mike, and Gloria took their plates off the table in unison.
"Do you want an enema?!!" That line in itself was groundbreaking. You would have NEVER heard that word in a TV show at that time.
Lol
You would have never heard many words on mainstream television in the 70’s but you did thanks to All In The Family 😂
hysterical
Amazing how Carroll didn't smirk or laugh at that line
The way Edith yelled it was histarical 😂😂
Easily in the top five best episodes! I remember watching this with my grandfather, and I thought he was going to have a stroke from laughing so hard.
This is one of the best episodes! They take a simple, ordinary premise - accidental food poisoning - and turn it into a hilarious bit of drama.
Gloria's reaction at 3:17 when Archie yells at her,Don't you sneeze no more!😅😅
I swear Archie had a very hard time to keep character when Edith went “Wait, do you want an enema?” His facial expression was precious🤣🤣🤣🤣🤣
YEAH!!!!
That's what I like about it. I didn't know what that was originally as a child so what was funny was Archie's reaction to what she said.
This is some Marx Brothers s*** right there!
Yes, you can see by Carroll's face that he was close to laughing..love it.
This is one of the best ever! All the running, yelling, panicking and sneezing! So funny, perfect acting by all 4!
Play it at twice the speed and it really sounds screwball.
Do you want a enema…best episode ever!
The whole episode was too funny but THAT line still kills me!!!
Only if Gloria is providing it
I don’t think there has ever been a better sitcom actor than Carroll O’Connor. You can see why the director John Rich who helmed 81 episodes never missed an opportunity to zoom in on Archie and hold the shot. His facial expressions were comedic gold time and time again.
3 cans for 59 cents! What a bargain!
Even if it was porsen.
I'm amazed when Archie didn't break character when Edith suggested an enema lol
He just about lost it😂😂😂
Itt looks like he lamost id lOL! SO hysterically funny! @@larrywakeman4371If it wasn't, it was funny anyway.
Remember, they practiced this so I'm sure at rehearsals there had to be some break ups over this whole nutty scene.
"You're in the way! You're in the way, Edith! You're in the way!"
"What do you want me to do?! Do you see a sneeze on this dial?!"
"Do you want an enema?!"
Great lines lol
Probably my favorite episode. The four of them are so brilliant together in this episode. Love when Mike runs into Archie, lol.
They are magic together.
richard staahl was great
I love that family how all of them are together in whatever problem they have😍

I've said it once before on an All In The Family post, but Gloria is absolutely adorable. This entire sneezing fit had me crying🤣
I thought Sally was underrated as an actor and had great comedic timing. They all did but it was sometimes hard to get out from under the shadow that Carroll O'Connor and Jean Stapleton cast on that stage. Rob Reiner was great too.

@@natiliee.s.5476 All In The Family, Golden Girls, Will & Grace.
Brilliantly written, directed, and performed. One of the funniest scenes on this show or any other.
The next scene at the hospital in the waiting room is a good one. The receptionist really put Archie in his place.
He got stuck with a needle in the butt.
Teresa Betancourt 🌶️ ! Have a sit, Mr. Bonkers

The best television comedy of all time!! Nothing else compares. Four of the best comedic actors in television history!!
Agree 💯
Technically it’s not a comedy according to Carroll O’Connor. He said that this is satire.
This is indeed the greatest show of all time.
This is one of the nicest dresses Edith ever wore! It's the color of it. Just felt like mentioning that. 😊
Before she started wearing the red pantsuit

The first five seasons. 👍

I could barely breathe after Mike took out Archie on the back step. The enema line did me in.
Ikr. And getting stuck in the kitchen door was such a hilariously goofy running gag on here.

SO HYSTERICALLY FUNNY! WE love when Archie says, that he has "all that antitoxidote cruisin' through his body! :P!!!
So much fun to see them again! Keep ‘‘em coming! “Do you want an enema?” Best line ever!
Edith 100 percent would give Archie an enema if he said yes!! LMAO..love this classic show!!
They were absolutely hilarious!!! 👍👍👍😂😂😂
I figured they were probably magic mushrooms from Meathead's private stash.
"what brand were they Edith?" "I don't know, it was a funny name." "Pocono's a funny name." "What's Funny about It!!" hahahah his expressions are genius!
In the end the mushrooms were Top Cap. So what's funny about that name?
That word enema was so funny those writers was ahead of their time.❤🎉❤
When this show first aired, I never thought it’d last because of the topics and language. But, I was SOOO wrong, thankfully.

I replayed "do you want an enema?" Ten times...each time funnier. Archie's face...I'm splitting my sides😂
He's like, "What good does that do?"
Best show I had ever seen
Laughed all the time, unless I was occasionally crying ..
You cut the last part where Mike brings Gloria back in, telling her she can't go to the hospital because she is sick.

Archie’s expression after the enema line had me busting a gut. One of the best sitcoms of all time.
