As a person who is used to seeing newer Tokusatsu and not really look back on the past, I was pleasantly surprised at how much I enjoyed the first episode of Goranger. While I agree a lot of the aspects of it hasn't aged to it's greatest it still is a pretty fun ride to go through, along with the fact that it made the Black Cross Army actually threatening and terrifying, legitimately scary, something you don't always have with newer Toku. I also like the way it portrayed some of the characters and the way they would act to give the audience information about their personality without having to explain it to us with senseless dialog alluded to what's to come 20 episodes later. It kinda brought me back to a simpler time where an episode was more of a fun experience then a giant start to 50 thousand different plot threads. Not that I dislike or can't tolerate newer Toku, trust me I love the shit out of it, but if it's one thing Goranger has inspired me to do it's look back on older Showa Sentai and Rider series, because even if the style and way of working is dramatically different from what I'm used, that just means when it's good I'll probably enjoy it tens times more.

Fun fact: Daisuke Ban (the guy who plays Kenji’s childhood friend Tetsuya Yokota) would later appears in Battle Fever J as Battle Cossack II and both characters had similar sad deaths

I have a few gripes with reds review
    1. The reason there aren’t any Mecha fights, simply stem from giant mecha not being popular at the time fallowing giant robo in 1968, in fact it wasn’t until daitetsujin 17 and toei spider man that helped popularize mecha fights again
    2. The kkk inspired design was used before-multiple times, mostly Kamen rider, hell! Satan egos from battle fever j, even has a kkk inspired look (red if your reading this, nice job with the space hitler thing, it’s not like people are gonna ignore the kkk and their crimes eh?)
And 3. It’s a toku show from the 70s, kikaider, inzuaman, and even Kamen rider, all have dated special effects and stories, and yet we like how campy it is, think of it like the 60s batman series, where the visuals are dated, and yet we still like them for it

Hey, Marvelous in Red, we met in PMC and recently met back up at Japan World Heroes; to jog your memory a bit; at JWH, I was the Decade who did the Super Hero Taise pics with you on Day 2 or was it Day 3? But antsy, I finally got around to seeing your channel as well.
Sure, Gorenger hasn't aged that well but at least it was the one that started it all.
It's still remembered fondly in Japan. When the Sendai Earthquake hit, Akarenger's statue in front of the Ishinomori museum survived. That statue along with Ichigo's statue became symbols of hope while Japan was recovering.
It got remembered well enough to have Akarenger lead all of the Super Sentai in the Legend War against the Zangyack Empire. In fact, from time to time, Akarenger has been featured in Japan's Red Warrior shows alongside his sucessors.
Its effects may not be up to par to today but it still carries the same positive messages Super Sentai has always carried throughout the years and I appreciate what this show did and what it paved the way for.

I found a Super Sentai fast track guide that recommends watching 23 episodes out of the 84 episodes on Goranger. Does that make it worth a watch?

  • @Raycheetah

Many of the same complaints can be applied to the first Kamen Rider and other early toku shows: Low budget, inconsistent, and often poorly scripted. So? For the audience at the time, they were new and exciting, and many old-timers like myself remember them fondly. Don't judge Gorenja too harshly, when the "sentai of the week" shows have begun to blend together into an indistinguishable, mass-produced sequence of series. Generation Kikaida represent! =^[.]^=

Wow, these special effects have not aged well. It's really amazing to see how the campy, cheesy effects, odd comic relief moments, and occasionally outlandish evil plots clash so much with the attempts to make a serious/violent series.

    • @only257
      @only257 5 лет назад

James Bevan yeah the special effects were the best for it’s time keep in mind their was no cgi all the bad were miniatures and other filming techniques😜

Though it did not hold up to the test of time, Gorangers was a enormous hit in Japan when it came out that year and it started the Super Sentai Franchise.
This and JAKQ would not be part of the franchise until 1995.

In terms of writing, direction, and designs go shows like Ultra Q and Kamen Rider did a far better job also I don't know why Goranger didn't have any Mecha or gigantic creatures because at the time of its run both Terror of Mechagodzilla and 76 King Kong in the theaters. Also, why was red the only one with a gun?
