Theme from Chinatown - Trumpet Solo

- After years of searching, I finally found a partial conductor's score for this piece; I always stumbled on the first chord when I was trying to write it out by ear (it's every note of an F Major scale if you're interested), and so I'd put it aside waiting for the next time I'd give it a go. I've finally scored and arranged it to play along with.
The score to the movie Chinatown written by Jerry Goldsmith is a famous one. He is said to have written it in just two short weeks, and waited for the lead trumpeter for the MGM orchestra, Uan Rasey, to return from holidays to record it. It's gone down in history as one of the great movie themes, and many trumpet players, including myself, consider Uan's recording a masterclass in trumpet phrasing and sound.
I orchestrated, arranged and programmed the backing track, and shot and recorded this in my mini studio. I hope you enjoy it, lot's of things I hear in it to work on in 2020!
Recorded in Logic x using the BBC Symphony by Spitfire Audio (with the exception of the piano).

One of the most beautiful trumpet pieces ever.
Listening to this, I am sure Uan was looking down smiling and saying, "bravo well done"!
What a beautiful play! Wish you can post more solo play video, your technique is world class.
I'd so love to have that backing track. I'm obsessed with this music and want to play
Such a beautiful solo of my favorite piece for trumpet.❤️ I also adore how you roll the film’s intro during……👌❤️💋
You make (one of the most difficult instruments), look easy.
It hit me in the 'gut'with so much emotion, fabulously tune and thank you for sharing, and fabulously played, thank you so much,it cheered me up on a rainy day 🏄🎶
Excelente! A true tribute to those all unknown trumpet heroes at the commercial studios. In this case, the great Uan R.
Simply magnificent! Extraordinary rendition.
Hauntingly beautiful.
Dear all; unfortunately for those asking, I cannot share the backing that I made. All of my videos have copyright claims against them as I (obviously) didn't write the original, and so I would be getting into hot water making them available.
As you may know, the piano "glisses" at the start are played by strumming the piano strings with the fingers, not playing the keys. I've always loved how Goldsmith seamlessly introduced the strings as that gliss fades. I believe it's F3 to E4. If you can confirm this for me, I have access to several grand pianos and would be glad to send you a recording of the part to include in your recording.
Wow, and thank you for this info. I learned a new thing today!!
I hadn’t any idea about the haunting “glisses” piano sounds at the start of the song. Very cool❤️
Nice. I got to study with Uan but he never picked up his horn. He wasn't particularly fond of this. He told me he had just comeback from vacation and got to the studio early to get the 3rd book, we know the rest
It's nonetheless a legendary solo from the movies. The sheer emotion in the solo is stunning, and I think contributed to the movie quite a bit. This style that Uan was using is known among players as "smaltzy" (i.e. plenty of deep and obvious vibrato, plenty of exaggerated bends and scoops). If you do this right, in the right context like this you have something pretty "magical". It's a plus that Uan was such a wonderful man. He was always super nice to me, and was a good friend to my teacher. WE all loved Uan.
Magnificent trumpet piece!
Sad and moving.
I agree it would great have this backing track!
I tried getting my hand on a trumpet only (or main like this) version for a while - actually after watching an episode of the Simpson’s - congrats on the take !
Wonderful!!
Sounds great, very jazzy tone 🎺
Bravo!
Brilliant.
Excellent
Beautifully done, and great trumpet tone. Where did you find the partial conductor's score? I've been looking for anything I could find from this score for years!
As he explained, he did it himself
@@Claudg2008 He says in the first line above that he found a partial conductor's score. That's why I asked.
Silky smooth..... 😎🎺
Agreed-Smooth! Beautiful solo❤️
Wow. Please come back
I totally agree.
I really enjoy his performance.
It's been three years since then
Muy bien joven...muy bien 👍👍👍
absolutely fantastic arranging, solo, everything. Note on the audio engineering, do you mind a constructive note? just fade back a little on the solo, so it has that haunting, ethereal sound
I wanna learn this song so bad💔
I just want the solo that’s all
Sounds great I love the big fat tone!
Is the score or the backing track available from you?
Did you use a King Silver Flair Trumpet just like Uan Rasey in the original solo? The sound is so similar although I know you are playing it on your own.
Great work man! Chinatown is one of my favorite movies and i’d love to play this on my trumpet. Is there any chance you could provide me with the notes so that i also can play it?
Sir, Can i please have the backing track
It's the best there ever was....
pacific crest 2019 ballad be like
Hi trumpet fam! Lets support each others channel!
Well done. But I would leave such an iconic, signature piece to the master.
That’d make for a boring video...
