Wow, what a powerful teaching piece. Even the first rendition was beautiful with impeccable tone but it only got better and better with incredible insight into the role of the conductor. Another video that makes me happy to live in an age where I can just go on RUclips and see this sort of thing.
The maestro knows the kid’s enormous potential. That’s why he pushed him so hard to bring him to the next level. Elmer is amazing and we will hear a lot about him.
Such a gifted trumpet player! This masterclass was so interesting to watch. The genius of maestro as he coaches an amazingly talented player to become their best! This was a special event.
To have Benjamin Zander write your letter of recommendation… wow. Just wow! I have no doubt in what he said about the trumpeter being the best of his age.
"We'll go on a journey together." And that is exactly what listening to music should be: a journey through the world in which the piece is transporting us.
I love the trumpet when he said “you are speaking for all humanity” I’d agree it touches my mind, ghibli studios music has good trumpet pieces, it’s so beautiful
Getting into the nuts and bolts of emotional interpretation, to be supported and conveyed by the music, is in a way deeper and more satisfying than the full performance 'on the day''. Many thanks to both! I learned a lot.
Fantastic! I learned so much from watching this for my own trumpet playing. I'd love a teacher like this! This young man is so talented; God bless him and the gift he has been given; I hope he goes far!!
I am absolutely delighted to experience the depth and power of this piece. To view the passion needed to grasp the intricacies of Mahler's heart merge's the listener to the musician, as one.
I was RAISED in a family of 8 boys and two girls ( the MAHLER SYNDROME) I had to wait til the house was empty on weekends so I could practice in the basement. God Bless this gifted young man.
This is what a classical first trumpet player should sound like. I would listen to more classical music if the trumpet players sounded like this. What an excellent trumpet player. Benjamin Zander also makes a compelling case here for the role of conductor on solo passages in orchestras.
I love this! The opening, in my opinion, is not just reflecting something with funeral nor it can be only characterized as "sad". It also represents some deeper mysterious idea or emotion, making contact with Cosmic principles, with God (as you wish). So in that more universal, highly abstract level it is "connected" with eternal life, joy and peace as well.
Hi Benjamin and Elmer!! I played French horn for several years during the mid-90's with the Houston Symphony Orchestra after winning an audition at age 22, always loved the Mahler V recording with Chicago/Solti/Herseth... Wonderful trumpet playing, Elmer! You are so worthy. Equally wonderful conducting/coaching, Elmer! I would love to work with you, Elmer - such passion and perspective! You would have my ALL, as did Sergiu Comissiona. I will NEVER forget getting 'the nod' from him during Strauss Don Juan. Yes, the setting, the mood, the desperate anger... the mind-blowing heaviness of the situation... Abandon all concern for accuracy/technique/acceptance. The trumpet truly does bring out the moments that the person being depicted on the battlefield of 4,000 dead the trumpeter the only one standing their alive. Quiet a sad scene for the mind to conceive, but it is brought to life through the trumpeter and of course the genius of Mahler too! This young man did a wonderful job playing the composition and Maestro Zander with a wonderful job of bringing the very best through helpful ideas so the young man was able to present an improved version of his trumpet parts.
Congratulations maestro .. you are a great musician. I appreciate your work , conducting techniques and interpretation 👏👏👏👏🎺🎺👏👏👏 Greetings from Brazil.
Amazingly interesting! Benjamin Zander presents the drama so well. Elmer has to take this mystical idea of music/Drama and push the interpretation through the horn. I play and emotions inside do find their way through the horn. I'm not even sure the make of the horn is that important now. It sounds like a ml bore maybe bigger? It's the player really.
It sounds like the inconsolable wailing that happens when the pain of the moment takes over, everything else fades away, and all you have is your pain.
This player is extremely relaxed with ease of tone production, warm sound and consistency. The only thing I feel is missing -- and this is a nit to pick - is more of an edge and gravitas to the sound.
What I hear is weil done, but please hear Tarkövi. It is a little different. On the recording 1974 you do not hear Fritz Wesenigk. I will research that and will come again on this place.
