The only problem with that is, the pronounciation of words and names arent consistant with future seasons because the actors are reading, and they dont know any better. For example the Tyrells, they sound different every time. In later seasons they nail the pronounciation because the characters are introduced to the show.
Tyrion was asked how many winters he’s seen - "Eight, nine. I misremember. And all of them short." So a winter lasting a generation was not something anyone had ever seen. That’s why that one specifically has the nickname “The Long Night”
If you've not heard him do try and have a listen to his narration of the Dunk and Egg stories, he has different accents for every character and all are amazing.
I would strongly suggest finding a map of Westeros and Essos (there are many online) and checking with it whenever you're unsure of the location. It helps a lot with just knowing where everything is and where the characters are. Without the map, the show can get pretty confusing. But of course it's up to you.
1000x this. I've looked at maps and watched the show several times, but I realized I still didn't have it in perspective yet when I sat down and did a cross stitch of Westeros. There's also a set of maps you can get that gives you complete immersion into every part of the GOT world.
I've always imagined Valyria to be more like our worlds version of the Roman Empire. A highly sophisticated civilization in a very backwards world. Like when the Roman Empire fell, lots of their knowledge was lost- even simple things like irrigation.
Roman Empire with a healthy dollop of the lost continent of Atlantis. Or, the other way around, the lost continent of Atlantis with a healthy dollop of the Roman empire
They mentioned the First Men came from Dorne because they crossed the "arm of Dorne" which was a landbridge between Westeros and Essos (where Dany is). The land bridge no longer exists today, although there is an archipelago called the Stepstones
A lot of this is analogous to British history. The original inhabitants of Britain were displaced by what we now call Celts, or the First Men, who were then mixed with Angles (and Saxons and Jutes) to create Angle-land, or "England". Bran the Builders wall is like Hadrians Wall, to keep out the Wildlings (or Picts, Scots). The unruly Dornish are analogous to the Cornish. England even had seven kingdoms like Westeros, and other medieval fantasy stories.
Pike versus Spike.... a pike is a type of pole-arm (a long shafted weapon, like a spear or halberd) that had a spike on it. The people that wielded pikes were called pikeman. I'm pretty sure Joffrey said spike, but it would be just as relevant to say pike most likely.
The Mrs putting in work even taking notes on extra information some people don’t watch to begin with. I respect the effort and grind. Also we don’t expect you to even edit these. Usually people just let them play through and upload as-is so I recognize the extra work being done. Hope these bring you deeper into the world we all love and you feel more connected and invested in the story.
I feel the best way to watch these (and it looks like you did) is to know each of these are told from the perspective of the narrating character, with all their personal biases and judgment. So nothing can be taken as absolute 100% fact.
I always thought of Dorne as similar to Spain or Portugal maybe? Its the sun drenched south and has sea access...the people have that sort of feel to them.
Love that you're doing the Histories and Lore! Not sure when your next uploads will be, so just wanted to wish you both the Merriest Christmas possible. You've made my year better than the last few have been and you are appreciated from the North, where winter has come.
It definitely makes reactors stand out when they are dedicated enough to watch this! It helps you guys too but either way, Thank you! For giving this show the respect I personally feel it deserves. Merry Christmas 🎄🎁 Keep up the epic work 🤩🤩
Love your reactions! You two are so smart, it makes for fantastic reactions. Storms End is the Baratheons home, aka King Robert Baratheon. And Dorne is the southern most part of Westeros.
And you could pretty much say the wildlings are the Scottish, iron Islanders are the Welsh, Dorne is like Spain/Portugal, essos is like eastern Europeans. The Dothraki are pretty much based on the Mongolians, so Khal Drogo was like Genghis Khan
I still remember entering this world blind. It took awhile before I could finally grasp the Targaryen history and how powerful they were. You don't really see that in the beginning episodes. We're actually thrust into a world where the loong line of ruling Targaryens has just ended.
I am so happy you are watching these as well! They will immerse you even more into this world and will actually help you understand a lot of the history, why certain people or houses are the way they are, plus many more amazing things. I recommend you do the corespondent History and Lore video after each season. The fact that the characters are narrating these is amazing and it makes them seem like bonus episodes. You can also hear the same stories or events told from the point of view of each character that took part in them, which is another great thing.
Regarding the frase "taken the black" referes to the admission into the Nights Watch. It has nothing specifically to do with Castle Black. It means that you "put on the uniform" so to speak, because the uniform is black. It doesn't matter where you get posted (whether its Eastwatch, Castle Black or another station).
The writer of the books, GRRM, said that the strange season lengths is a magical thing, and it doesn't just have an astronomical cause. This isn't a spoiler or anything, for the record.
3:11. You know the Bering Strait between Russia and US, yeah, where it's only 4km of water or smth between the countries. There used to be land there, same with Essos and Westeros at the Arm of Dorne.
Wildlings, white walkers and children are all very different things. Children didn’t become wildlings the children are the children and the wildlings are the wildlings the only thing they have in common is being north of the wall. And “taking the black” is just another saying for becoming a man of the nights watch. All you will wear from that day on is black especially the cloak. Hence “taking the black”
Histories and lore is the perfect thing to understand the show. I would definitely recommend watching house of the dragon - either during or after GOT ! It’s a prequel to GOT
This was fantastic.. i love that you both reacted to this.. not many have. I agree with alot of your comparisons to this world to our own histories.. bottom line. I am enjoying your viewpoints .. agree to some, not all. But completely in support of you guys diving deep into the lore. I am so glad i found your channel months ago, loving the growth of you as people and the channel.. keep going i’ll keep watchin’ !
Most of the people in North are of First Men descent, Everyone else you've met till now are Andals. Eg. Starks are first men and follow the old religion, Andals are normally Faith of the Seven worshipers, except Sam who despite being an Andal converted to Old Gods faith in Season 1.
Thank you for reacting to history and lore videos. They're honestly the best part about the show. I hope you guys wouldn't stop reacting to them or just post it on Patreon like most reactors.
I think the Freehold of Valyria is a mix of past multiple nations/empires. In regards to the “doom” it’s clear it’s inspired by Pompeii, with the roads paving back to Valyria is inspired by the Roman Empire and i would assume, considering Game of Thrones is inspired by British history, also the British empire. The Targaryens were the last of the Dragonlord families from Valyria. There was 40 families with dragons, the Targaryens being one of the lesser noble houses.
I wish I'd known about these the first few times I watched this show back in the day. I really like how each character can put their 'own spin' on the same events that happened. So glad you two are doing these. Keep up the great work!!! ❤❤ MamaKat
HAHAHA! I absolutely died when he said that maybe, just maybe, Joffrey would become a White Walker (around the 18-minute mark). It came completely out of nowhere, with hardly any build up! That was hilarious! ;)
As someone who has watched the show several times, I would encourage you to rewatch these after you're done. There are a TON of little things mentioned that don't seem important to you right now, but they are to me since I know what happens in future seasons. It also would allow you some nostalgia, some reliving of the whole show, without having to rewatch the entire show.
As someone who has watched GoT from beginning to end at least 5 times, I completely forgot that Thorne was sent to King's Landing to show Joffrey the dead hand. They never addressed that plot point again on the show. I looked it up, and the actor was unavailable for awhile, so they just dropped it.
And so, the Sweet Summer Students arise. Of course, history also carries with it matters of perspective, along with knowledge. Wonderful to see you both enjoying your scholarly pursuits.
The seasons are kind of random in this world, there are long winters, long summers, short winters, etc. We don't really know what is behind it, but it's just a cool aspect of this world. The long winters usually bring bad things with them, as you would expect.
Yeah, I would like to point that they are random in how much they last, not in the order or anything like I've seen some places, that's why when they did act really random they became remarkable events (the year of the false spring for example) they had winter then a short spring then winter again. Also George has stated that the seasons will be fixed somehow so there's that
The best way to think of Westeros is to envision it as the Great Britain Isles, whereas Essos would be more continental Europe, and Valyria the equivalent of the Roman Empire.
18:15 smartest deduction about westeros seasons i have ever heard. Not even the author has said that. We all asumed its just "magic". This guy is going places.
Yeah he gave a pretty solid deduction, but actually is just "magic". George has stated that by the end of the series (if we ever get to read that) the seasons will be "fixed" I doubt that they can shift the planet's axis or something like that, so pretty sure it will be something magical, probably the others downfall mixed with bran doing something wacked and whatnot.
Excellent narration by the cast of the show. Notice though that the different narrators have slightly differing versions of the same story. For example, Bran claims the Wall was built by Bran the Builder, while Lord Jeor Mormont says it the First Men who did it. Our narrators are not entirely reliable and its something to keep in mind as you go through the lore series.
I watched the show many times, but somehow it's the first time I watch these. It's interesting the context presented about the disbelief in the white walkers. It's said that white walkers were defeated by an alliance of the first men and children of the forest. It seems to me that the Andals might not have even seen white walkers even back than. So it's no wonder that all the southern houses that descend from them are so dismissive of their existence.
The Histories and Lore will clarify so much for you. There is so much description of the world and the actions of characters in the past. It’s like a school class but an entertaining one. Keep up the good work. You two are really on top of this. Also, think of Dorne as equivalent to Spain in our real world.
Think of Valyria as being like ancient Rome and the mythological Atlantis in regards to technology and other better life advancements, except they had dragons and magic. Building your civilization around 14 active volcanoes, most likely a super volcano, is never a good idea. The Targaryens were considered a lesser house of Valyria, so imagine what a powerful Valyrian house was like. I would imagine you will hear a lot of Bran the Builder being mentioned in the stories. There are rumors he built the "Wall". Bran the Builder is from the Age of Heroes, magic and all that.
The Long Night was winter that lasted for an unknown length but it is thought to been atleast 20 years. It was when the White Walkers or also known as "The Others" attacked and it happened about 8000 years before A Game of Thrones. The Doom was the cataclysmic event that destroyed Old Valyria about 400 years before A Game of Thrones when the 14 Flames bursted open like eggs, what caused the Doom is unknown.
I don't know if this was intentional, but Valeria reminds me of the story of Atlantis. Oh whoa...right exactly as I wrote that first sentence, you said the same thing! Ha! Great minds, etc. 😂. I wonder if the Atlantis thing was intentional by GRRM?
Yes they are included in the dvd's. The fandom always tells reactors to watch them after each seasons. But if you noticed, they are ment to be watched before every season.
I ❤ you Brooke you are so diligent with your note taking! That is how I know you really care about the story! You should read the books when you are done reacting! They leave a lot out in the show.
Lol pike or spike would work, I guess it would depend exactly on the instrument. Short sharp thing built into a castle, spike. Long wooden pole with a metal point at the end, pike. A head could be mounted on either the way i see it.
Just as in real life history, theres a lot of people in westeros named the same. Or named after an ancestor. Its the same way we have like 10 king Henry's and louie and phillip.
One advantage of reading the books over watching the show is the books came with a very detailed map of the world plus in the back they had the names of every and whose house they belonged to . Anyway geographically speaking if wesstros was America (both north and south America)than dorne would be like the bottom part of South America but similar to how we had a land mass connecting Alaska with russsia they had one is the south connected dorne to eastros
Westeros (including dorne) is said to be about the size of South America (which is why it took a month for the Robert and Cersei to travel to Winterfell).
Someone please correct me if I’m wrong, but I believe the people and places in GOT are most all based on real life nobles and locations. I think the geography is inspired by Pangea and you can especially see it with Westeros. I think the Starks are inspired by the house of York and the Lannisters are house of Lancaster, real life noble families who rivaled over the English throne (look up Wars of the Roses). I mostly wanted to say that there is more than just Westeros and Essos. The show doesn’t go in to it at all, but in the books and other lore, there are other continents and islands that are essentially uninhabitable. I think they also contain crazy, jurassic or mythical type creatures and vegetation. The story of ASOIAF is so tragic and beautiful and captivating, but the depth of lore is unimaginable 😂 once you guys are finished with the show (and House of the Dragon 😌), you should totally deep dive into the histories and legends. I promise you won’t run out of content any time soon.
10:20 - it's a mistake on the writers part. They said "thousands of years ago a cataclysm destroyed the land". In reality the Doom (cataclysm) happened 400 years ago, not thousands.
Seasons could last 5 years, 10 years, 30 years,... they never know. They deduce it based on how long the previews season was. If it was a long summer, then the winter problably be long too. They cant tell how long it would be. Some people are born and die on the same season.
14:25 yes the valeryions were a cocky civilization. The targeryans are supposed to be larger than life. They act like Gods who own everything, and everyone else are sheep. They are game of thrones version of Elves.. but they are human. They act like larger than other humans.
The pronunciation of the name of house Tyrell, seems to have changed at some point. Bran pronounces it differently here, and I believe Loras pronounces it that way when he tells Renly that there's another Tyrell he should be banging...or words to that effect. I don't think it's an in-world thing. I think it's just a continuity error.
The decision to make characters narrate these was amazing, adds so much to the immersiveness
The only problem with that is, the pronounciation of words and names arent consistant with future seasons because the actors are reading, and they dont know any better.
For example the Tyrells, they sound different every time. In later seasons they nail the pronounciation because the characters are introduced to the show.
Agree

So a winter lasting a generation was not something anyone had ever seen. That’s why that one specifically has the nickname “The Long Night”
There's nothing quite like Viserys giving his completely Targaryen perspective on historical events. Great stuff!
They have already looked at one i believe
1000x this. I've looked at maps and watched the show several times, but I realized I still didn't have it in perspective yet when I sat down and did a cross stitch of Westeros. There's also a set of maps you can get that gives you complete immersion into every part of the GOT world.
Agreed
The Histories and Lore is definitely what made me understand the world more. Idk when the next upload will be so Happy Holidays guys ❤
I've always imagined Valyria to be more like our worlds version of the Roman Empire. A highly sophisticated civilization in a very backwards world. Like when the Roman Empire fell, lots of their knowledge was lost- even simple things like irrigation.

Spike is usually used in the context of not being a weapon wielded by a man, but half buried in the ground or walls, for passive defense purposes.
The Mrs putting in work even taking notes on extra information some people don’t watch to begin with. I respect the effort and grind. Also we don’t expect you to even edit these. Spike, pike, stake and/or spear are all interchangeable when it comes to displaying severed heads (ick!)
Is very nice to see you so invested in one of my favorite shows ❤
I feel the best way to watch these (and it looks like you did) is to know each of these are told from the perspective of the narrating character, with all their personal biases and judgment. So nothing can be taken as absolute 100% fact.
The fact that one guy thought of all this is insane , the world of Martin is truly vast.
Dorne is basically Spain. We'll see Mesopotamia later :)
The Starks are descendants of the first men
I always thought of Dorne as similar to Spain or Portugal maybe? Its the sun drenched south and has sea access...the people have that sort of feel to them.
Love that you're doing the Histories and Lore!

Love your reactions! You two are so smart, it makes for fantastic reactions. Storms End is the Baratheons home, aka King Robert Baratheon. And Dorne is the southern most part of Westeros.
Appreciate you guys doing some research into this stuff, not many reaction channels look at The Histories and Lore stuff 👍🏼👍🏼💯
Westeros is actually based on the United kingdom. George RR Martin actually got the idea for the wall after visiting Hadrian's wall
And you could pretty much say the wildlings are the Scottish, iron Islanders are the Welsh, Dorne is like Spain/Portugal, essos is like eastern Europeans. The Dothraki are pretty much based on the Mongolians, so Khal Drogo was like Genghis Khan
Jorah is not Targarian, he's from Bear Island in the north.
Maester Amon is the Targarian at the wall.
35:45 keep in mind that the starks are basically the oldest known descendants of the first it comes into play later
I still remember entering this world blind. It took awhile before I could finally grasp the Targaryen history and how powerful they were. You don't really see that in the beginning episodes. We're actually thrust into a world where the loong line of ruling Targaryens has just ended.

It’s really cool that you decided to watch these ❤ you’re gonna walk into season 2 with a much more in depth understanding
Pike and spike are used interchangably in the show. A pike being a spear. So you're both right.
I love all the mistakes the CC makes due to the accents of the speakers. No one in charge thought to double check the auto-CC capture.
Here on Earth, a generation is generally considered to be 20-30 years.
A Pike is a weapon used by Infantrymen, it's somewhat a spear. yes, it's head on a Pike.
I've never seen the lore videos but I'm excited to listen along with you guys
Interesting comment about nukes. George RR said that in this world the dragons are the nuclear deterrent.
Best reaction I’ve seen to this. So good to re-live it with you 👍
In Norse myth the wall that surrounds Asgard was built by a giant. Lots of cool influences from myth and history in Martin's world.
Another great one guys!
3:11. You know the Bering Strait between Russia and US, yeah, where it's only 4km of water or smth between the countries. There used to be land there, same with Essos and Westeros at the Arm of Dorne.
You both are doing amazing. I look for your uploads everyday.

Thank you for reacting to history and lore videos. They're honestly the best part about the show. I hope you guys wouldn't stop reacting to them or just post it on Patreon like most reactors.
Valyrian steel is basically vibranium. Its a steel thats stronger than others, but as light as a toy sword.
Valyrian steel is closest to Damascus steel. Very hard and retaining a sharp edge, but requires special care.
I'm so happy you caught the Atlantis reference. It's definitely an inspiration for Valeria. Loving your reactions!
Histories and Lore! Great stuff and enjoyable to see things from the different perspectives of the different houses.
I think the Freehold of Valyria is a mix of past multiple nations/empires. It really helps to see how each character/family sees the same situation. It gives a better understanding of each individual’s motives going forward..
A rare time when the subtitles may be more of a hinderance. The subtitles for the H&L episodes frequently get the wrong word.
I love this, the lore is my fave and seeing you guys delving into it is amazing 🩷
HAHAHA! I absolutely died when he said that maybe, just maybe, Joffrey would become a White Walker (around the 18-minute mark). It came completely out of nowhere, with hardly any build up! That was hilarious! ;)

In this instance Pike and Spike are interchangeable
my favorite thing about the lore videos are that theyre in povs. Catelyns version of Roberts rebellion is far different than Roberts
Thanks for watching this guys! Not as good as the books but it will give you valuable insight❤
Dragons are this worlds version of nukes.
36:55. No, aegon the conqueror was 300 years before the start of the show. Targeryans ruled for 300 years.
Lo que conocéis es una gota, lo que desconocéis es el océano, haremos camino juntos
Love this! No one else has done the lore that I know of. I love the note taking. This is by far my favourite reaction of got!
Thank you
It was not in the original release and I think it was a fan produced video. I might be wrong.
It is Pike.
42:44 how many times has he said- it is instead of it’s 🤔🤔 caught my attention
dorne is the southern country of westeros
i would compare dorne to turkey as a land mass similarly shaped somewhat similar cultures in the show and acts as a landbridge to europe
Has anyone ever mentioned, you kinda look like Jim Halpert with that hair?
