Anthurium besseae aff. growing strong in ambient conditions in a glass vase per the Plant Gay Method! Never thought I could grow a plant like this in my home. I live in the opposite of its preferred conditions in the wild, so no help from my ambient air or my drafty windows. Seeing jungle plants growing happily when there is an arctic blizzard outside makes me giggle.
Yes! It’s kinda crazy how we can keep them happy when there’s freezing temps or even snow right outside! Glad to hear it’s working for you over there!😃
You saved my higher humidity loving philos i had never thought about constant root humidity til i found your channel i put moss poles in mine because im large leaf obsessed it makes it a bit trickier to not overwater but it works like a charm great info on this channel
I'm glad you clarified your care vs conditions. Never a dull moment if you just follow a care routine without considering how ever changing conditions effect care needs.
Thanks! Yes most people focus on care and don’t think about how your conditions can affect plants differently, even under the same care routine as someone else.
Thanks!🥰😚 I hear some people say shade your dark velvet leaves to make them darker. And I hear some people say blast them with bright light for darker foliage. I feel like they both can darken foliage. It might have to do with certain wavelengths a grow light gives off vs sunlight, which is over my head knowledge-wise at the moment. I also think generous fertilizing can help leaves grow more vibrant and darker as well! I’ve personally had dark leaves emerge in DEEP shade in my terrarium cabinet, as well as directly under a bright grow light. At the end of the day, it seems that aroids are experts at quickly adapting to a specific lighting situation and making the most of it😊
Hi there Jake, GREAT job! Here’s what I have found works best for me. Being half blind, it is very hard to eyeball moisture EXCEPT with Leica in glass jars. However, as you pointed out…that means a good bit of aeration down at the roots. SO, I found a single layer of Leica on the bottom, followed by Sphagnum and pumice (and charcoaland bark sometimes )followed by straight Sphagnum - oh yes! And plant too!) works really well. Thank you for all the information! , And for sharing your inspiring spirit.
Perfect! More aerated towards the bottom and more moisture-retentive towards the top helps keep the roots evenly hydrated! 😃At the end of the day, once we find what works for us, we just gotta stick to it
I use the no drainage to root cuttings and they are doing so insultingly well I let them stay in there and I now use it to "save" sick plants. It works well once you get a feel how much water/moisture a plant needs to be happy. Love how much fun you have with your plants! ❤❤
How deep is the fluval under the moss? How much water should there be in the glass container? I know that watering frequency varies on multiplefactors, but how often are you checking/ watering? You are an absolute delight!
The free draining base can be about an inch in depth, a little water can sit on the bottom when you re-water it, so long as it’s not flooding the moss, I check maybe twice a week on average, and maybe water each plant once a week on average:)
You just have to carefully tilt the vase and pour some water out. With smaller vases it’s easy to use your hands or paper towels to keep the substrate from falling out. Large vases can be heavy and trickier so I always try to water a bit, then wait a minute or 2 to see how much water accumulates in the base😁
Hiiii I'm new here and just want to say I love your videos!!! I will be attempting to create these vases for my two anthuriums but I was wondering how do you go about fertilizing these babies? Which fertilizer would be okay to sit almost stagnantly?
Thanks! Any fertilizer suited for houseplants will do! If you overdo the recommended dosage you might get some mineral build up on top of the medium and sometimes it gets into the foliage and burns the edges over time. To avoid this, use the recommended dosage or less and you’ll be just fine😁
Pretty interesting! I started growing Anthuriums in no drainage a while ago and they are doing much better than before, however I sometimes get rot when growing in aroid mix. I may try sphagnum moss. Right now I'm experimenting with coco chunks and self-made pon.
I get rot sometimes as well. It can happen if it’s too wet or too dry in the substrate without proper aeration. I’m always experimenting with different mixtures and ratios of substrates 🤓
New subscriber here! I came across your video just doing a little research. I like to think of myself as a fellow plant enthusiast/scientist 🤓 You my friend are delightful!!! I'm also a plant minimalist and don't like to do a lot of complicated things with my plants I LOVE clear and glass containers. I like to see the roots growing. I am going to try sphagnum moss w/glass containers immediately. It's so pleasing to the eye (IMO). Thank you for the insight. Now...on to binge-watching all of your videos. CIAO!
I'm starting slow with an anthurium fingers in pon with leca for the reservoir. I have a collar of sphagnum moss covered in an icee lid (whatever works!) and it's doing great. Leaf after leaf coming in, none departing! I'm nervous to try fluval stratum and I also think it may not be appropriate. I have humidifiers running so the humidity never dips below 65% and averages 70% in the areas where I grow my aroids. I've got cacti outside and a jungle inside. I digress - yeah, people still say that, right? (Neurodivergent moment) My conditions are different from yours so I need to go with what works here. I'm pretty new to anthurium, but I'm going to research their particular habitats and go from there. You taught me so much! I love the incredible variety of content you post. But dude, that pallidiflorum deserves better! What possessed you to pot her in terracotta? I'm sure you had a perfectly reasonable reason, and I'd love to know the story there! 💚
Great video as usual Jake! 👏🏻 My threshold for using fluval is very low- I love the stuff so much, never tried fluval + moss only tho so I'll give it a whirl. Also...The light shaming 😂😂💀
I'm hoping to experiment with new ways to grow my plants, specially my maranta which likes more moisture, and it gets hot in the house in the summer 😅. And side note: this channel is making me less nervous to try Anthurium! :)
wow. once it went down to 40% in my house and i thought i was going to die lol. i live in 75% humidity since im by the beach. if this works for you thats great! esp for people in drier climates
Hi😊 Thank you for boosting my mood and "kick" to repot my plants😊 I made mix fluval+lechuza+moss. Nice clarinervium 😮💚 Btw I cant stop looking On that art behind you.. please could you show it once closer 🙏 ?? I'm begging you! Greetings 💚
@@lemusiciensolitaire8792 it was the only one I had until it flowered on me twice. I was disgusted. I get trypophobia triggered from the flowers so I gave it away to a friend who will appreciate it😅
I absolutely love your personality! I could listen to you all day. I blame you for my growing love for anthuriums. ❤
Isn’t he awesome? lol 😂
He cracks me up.
Aw thank you guys!😄
He's a beaut, isn't he?!

Man besseae aff is such a gorgeous anthurium! I might even prefer it to papillilaminum.

DO ITTTT😈
@@plantgayforlife Oh, I already have the vases!
😂😂😂 this is what a failure looks like 😂😂😂
You are so friggin funny! In addition to being a horticultural genius and visionary.
I appreciate that! But I’m just a plant nerd who likes to talk lol!😅
Another fun filled video from our Plant Gay! Also, would u reccommend higher light for darker foliage?

yup, I've def switched a few of my plants over to the glass sitcho dollar tree has a nice selection for beginners
Yes! It’s always fun to find good deals!😃
How do you fertilizer the ones growing in sphagnum moss?
Orchid fertilizer. Better gro better bloom. The same as all my other plants😊
Thank you for sharing. Very informative 😊. Quick question, if you accidentally overwater the glass vases, how do you get rid of the excess water?
You just have to carefully tilt the vase and pour some water out. With smaller vases it’s easy to use your hands or paper towels to keep the substrate from falling out. Large vases can be heavy and trickier so I always try to water a bit, then wait a minute or 2 to see how much water accumulates in the base😁

I need a BVEP seedling
Thanks for explaining this, ive never understood how people where growing anthuriums in glass jugs with no drainage.
It’s a great way to compensate for low humidity environments like mine😄

You got this! Anthuriums are not as hard as we think. We just need to give them an environment they can thrive in. The cases really help with that!
'some kind of porous rock that can wick water up' - would lava rocks work? aquarium shops sell them in bulk
Depends how big they are and how big the air pockets in between them will be. Might be worth trying out with a cheap plant or propagation:)
wow. once it went down to 40% in my house and i thought i was going to die lol. i live in 75% humidity since im by the beach. if this works for you thats great! esp for people in drier climates
Yes! You probably don’t even need to grow in vases because your humidity is high enough to keep your plants happy. 😊
Lol, I live in Sweden. Winter indoors can get below 20%... It totally sucks, especially for my plants.
I'm ready for a BVEP seed once you self your.
My Black Swan from you just gave me a new leaf.
HELL YEAH! Keep me updated as it grows!

From what I have heard, it’s lineage is unknown or unsure:)
