    Glad you made it clear that it really didn’t matter in regards to whether the yarn is on top or underneath. The point is to make a knot each end and slide the knots together and pull tightly and trim the ends. I’ve make myself a big cake using this knot to crochet a scrap crochet blanket blanket. Big time saver. No ends come undone. Thank you for the reminder Stacey. As usual you explain things clearly and well.

    This is very clear! Simply tie each yarn around the other. This has worked for me well with thinner yarns and a textured fabric. However! I tried this with super bulky yarn, and on my return pass, I watched as the yarn knot slowly untied itself.

    I use this a lot of the times on my projects, but I always leave the yarn ends and knit a few stitches with them (held together with the continuous strand of yarn). I then wash and block my work, and only after that do I cut them short. This way you'll never have ends poking through to the front of the work, and it secures the ends in the knitwork a bit more.

    Thx for that - I had to do it a few times till I realized that I was doing it wrong. I now know that it’s not tying the one yarn to the other yarn but rather it’s tying a knot with the working yarn to ITSELF around the new ball of yarn :) thanks!

      DiVaIve - same! And so I resorted to doing the join where you use a needle to make a loop by sewing the yarn back through itself, but really this is only good for me when using animal fibres. I’ve been using acrylic lately and just cringe when I have to join to a new ball. This knot is just what I needed too!!

    On the first knot, did you just wrap the yarn end around one time to make the knot? Your finger was in the way but it looked like you wrapped that one two times before the knot formed.

    Question - does it make a difference as to which way the tails of the knots point after you e tied them? This is exactly the way to tie an adjustable necklace that’s made from leather or string :) but in the case of a necklace it’s best to tie it so the tail sits naturally alongside its itself rather than toward the opposite string, leaving the tail slightly, so you can grab that to make the loop tighter. Man, I hope that all makes sense.
    I digress from my original question .
    Does it make a difference which way the knots are tied?
    Thanks again for all your hard work on your videos, I really enjoy them 👏🏼

    • @verypinkknits
      @verypinkknits  4 года назад +1

      From my experience - no, it doesn't make a difference. Just tie the yarn around the other strand. If you have an issue with the knot not holding, it is likely because of the yarn, and not the way you tied the knot.

    • @vecegary
      @vecegary 3 года назад +2

      Well... yes and no. This is a common knot for climbers (however using a double overhand knot on each rather than a single), wherein it matters greatly. Tying this knot with working ends (tails) lying along standing ends (yarn you will keep as the end product) produces both a neater knot, and one which you can easily pull in both directions (to loosen prior to final tightening). Either method functions for knitters, but, a neat and strong knot to be relied on should be tied as I suggest (I believe). As we learned during mountaineering: “A good knot ought not be knotted.” Suggest you experiment with each, and decide. Thank you for all you teach, Staci.

      allysonlarie Yarn Chicken is a great game to play usually towards the end of a project when you realise that there isn't quite enough yarn to finish the project, but you have a few oddments of yarn floating around in your project bag so you join them the working yarn and miraculously have enough yarn to complete!

    In your previous 1/25/17 tutorial, you had 1 yarn on the left going over the other yarn and then the yarn on the right going under. In this video, you placed both over the other yarn. I hope that makes sense....is there a difference? Does it not really matter? Will the knot still be as strong? Thanks for the slo-mo.

    • @verypinkknits
      @verypinkknits  4 года назад +2

      I believe I set things up the same way in the non slo-mo video...regardless, over/under doesn't make a difference, I just spread things out like this to give a good visual of where to tie.

    • @meridelmoss1802
      @meridelmoss1802 2 года назад

      You're correct. She did do it differently in the 1/25/17 video. It does make a difference if the yarn is tied by going over. The knot is called an overhand knot for a reason.

    I always use Magic Knot and have had no problems-until now! :( I have a chunky, slippery yarn that will NOT hold a knot. I need to join another skein of this yarn and have no idea what to do! The yarn will not hold a knot, but no other ways of joining work either. Everything just slips apart. This is a good quality brand of yarn, not cheap, which I found out too late has a lot of acrylic in it. Is this hopeless?

  • @BrendieR
    @BrendieR 4 года назад

    Does it make a difference if you don't cut the yarn? I am making a tubular striped cowl (The Litmus Cowl) and I've been leaving the ends untrimmed because they are inside the tube. Just worried it might be more likely to unravel if it's not cut.

  • @Jennifer-oz8ec
    @Jennifer-oz8ec 3 года назад

    I just used this Magic Knot and thought it was done quite well. I pulled tighter after cutting the ends and the yarn came apart. This has happened with another project. I'm now nervous to use this but I like it because it is so simple. What am I doing wrong, I wonder!!!!

    • @beckylouise384
      @beckylouise384 2 года назад

      I've been practicing this knot on cotton (dishcloth) yarn before trying it on the fuzzy chenille yarn I'm using for a blanket.
      Is the yarn you're using slick/ "slippery" (like satin or silk might be)? The magic knot works good on cotton yarn but I'm not sure how well it might work on really slick/'slippery" yarns.
      Are you tightening each knot really tight and then tightening really good once the two knots are drawn together to form the final knot?
