- In this episode I talk about what tools I'll be taking to the junkyard when I hunt for a donor junkyard LS engine. What's in your junkyard tool bag?

I always have a small L-pick and screwdriver for electrical connectors. Trim tool and panel clip tool for plastics. Fan clutch wrench and hammer. Kneel pad. Silicon spray/Deep Creep or WD40. Flashlight(s)/headlamp. Razor knife/pocket knife. Big torx (T50 for seat belts and body bolts). Bottle/Floor jacks. Metal parts tray and a bin system for nuts/bolts/clips etc. Mapp Gas torch. (If there's time I bring coolant jugs to grab me some coolant and also grab some fuses and realys and light bulbs) Camera to bring us along for the ride.
The only thing I can say for sure is.... I never get home with all the tools I took. ☹️
Lol same, I seem to leave a trail of tools behind me wherever I go. On the positive side I always have new tools haha
My buddy and I pulled 2 5.3 engines from trucks in 4 hrs. It's not bad. We paid $422 for both long blocks from pick and pull.
Great Video randy
I usually only have 2 screwdrivers a shifter and a socket set
I would take a bottle of map gas to heat up the dowel pins in the transmission bell housing... my last two engine pulls required me to heat the pins before it would separate
Good to know, thanks!
I pulled two transmissions from ls motors and both was a pain to get out the dowel pin one pin stayed in the trans lol
Would that engine hoist fits in your tool bag?
I've never pulled one at the junkyard either but I'd say you have plenty of tools. Dont forget the Allen sets for those flexplate bolts if you plan on removing the trans. Possibly an extractor set, I know the heads are pretty round and might be difficult to cut off even with a saw zall if you round them. Post progress if your able to and what you did end up using. 🤘
Good call on the Allen wrenches, will keep you guys updated on how it goes
pick and pull normally have a engine hoist contraption sitting near the exit for you to load your engine with. So not sure about the fancy engine hoist you got(jelous tho lol). Saw Saw is a must, cut frame right in front of where they put the rim stands.
bring extra blades for the saw saw!!!!! nothing worse then almost having it out and the bloody blade snaps on ya
That’s true but this hoist will be handy when I get the engine home.
@@bertvisser6423 and good point, I’ll bring extra saw blades
Xtra batteries couldn’t hurt.
You're taking too much ish. I have vids of pulling LS Engines at the junkyard. 8mm, 10mm, 13mm, 15mm, 22mm and 24mm. Long extensions. Keep all the extra stuff in ya truck til you know you need it. Multiple ways of pulling one. The large yards will have a crane for pulling and loading the engine. Use a seatbelt out there for a strap. Bring lots of water. :)
Good advice, thanks, I’ve watched several of your videos recently, good stuff
@@LowbuckLS Nice. Let me know if you have questions. First time is the hardest and easy afterwards
@@LowbuckLS Best advice. 1. Look for a wrecked suv or truck. 2. Try to turn over the engine before anything. 3. Find the most complete engine. First timer. Find one with the fenders or front end / transmission already removed. This way you only have 6 15mm engine mount bolts and pull it out.
Probably taking more than you need, but better to have something and not need it than to need it and not have it. My only advice is pull the intake to get to the top bell housing bolts. That way you don't have to mess with the trans at all. I also like pulling the fenders, rad, and core support. Many might say thats a waste of time, but makes it a heck of a lot easier to get the engine out......again, thats just what works for me. Good luck!
Good idea... I’m actually in the junkyard as we speak trying to pull an LQ4, I think I will pull the fenders, already have the rad support Sawzalled out, and will pull the intake if I have a hard time getting at that top bell housing bolt
Also take a handfull of 10mm sockets. They wonder off.
And I tend to find them. lol.
I hate to say it but I think your taking more tools than I have in my tool box lol I haven’t ever pulled a junkyard engine because of that issue hahaha
Lol yeah it kind of feels like I’m taking a lot... it’s almost a 2 hour drive though so I don’t want to forget anything
@@LowbuckLS I agree I think your doing the right thing taking that many tools. I never go to the junkyard because of all the tools I lack
cheep harbor frite. tools
