This has finally explained why I wake in the night gasping for air. It also explains why my sleep is so disordered and out of time. Now all I have to do is work out what to do about it before it kills me.

This PERFECTLY explained my problem....... For some reason I noticed the past few nights I have been going to bed and after laying down for about 5 minutes my heart starts beating insanely fast and its because I am not breathing enough and I have to start taking in a bunch of air to catch up... Its really making me scared, I thought it was a heart problem because my heart would beat insanely fast and felt like an anxiety attack almost.... My legs started twitching more as well :( I gotta go to the doctor because Im freaking out.

In the past few months I yelp out loud as I fall asleep... I'm going tomorrow for my 2nd sleep study, the first one was in 1999. Removing the contact adhesive from my hair was really difficult that time so this time I'm better prepared. 99 - 107 times an hour my sleep was interrupted during my first sleep study. The doctor told me he had been doing sleep studies for almost 30 years & had never met anyone as severe as me. I had to change doctors twice & threatened to change from the third one because I knew I had a problem. They didn't want to send me for a sleep study because I'm slender, not a bit overweight. The third doctor had me wait two & a half months to see the new doctor coming to town "because he's also a psychiatrist." Then she congratulated herself for having sent me. Central Sleep Apnea is real & more recognized than it was back then. My last machine, a Bi-pap, was recalled & then stopped working anyway so I've been on my own without help for months now. I'm hoping to improve my quality of life with the newer equipment.

I think this video is wonderful! The only thing is, I think more focus should be placed on Centrally Related Sleep Apnea. Whilst it's not as common as Obstructive, It is in some ways worse, because in this form of sleep Disordered Breathing, SDB, the patient does not even attempt to breathe. They stop breathing, and it's because for some reason that the brain actually stops telling the patient to breathe. This is VERY SERIOUS!!

*Normally when we sleep, the throat muscles keep our airway open so we can breathe in plenty of oxygen. When people suffer from sleep apnea, the airway narrows dangerously either because the throat muscles relax too much, the tongue and tonsils are too large in relation to the windpipe, or extra tissue from being overweight thickens the windpipe wall, narrowing the airway.*

Try Afrin (or equivalent) nasal spray before bedtime for the congestion if it's so bad that you can't breathe through your nose. It works really well, but you're not supposed to over use it. Also try nasal strips. Try to figure out what's causing the congestion, but these things will definitely help you to breathe in the meantime.

Leslie H My partner would sometimes do that. After spending thousands on the sleep test & the CPAP machine, I still had to move to another bedroom. My sleep is important too.

mikokuijn My partners mask develops air leaks during the night. Therefore, they would then disturb my sleep - especially when I could feel the air flow on the back of my neck for example. I had to end up moving to another room permanently which is a bummer but necessary. So now, he doesn't wear his mask much at all. Silly man.

All masks "leak" air because there is no other way for spent air to go. Air never goes back into the tube toward the machine.

Yes, I used to do that. You may need to change masks. I eventually became so sleep deprived I couldn't sleep without it. I think it just takes getting used to. Although it's not recommended, I'd take something to help me sleep so I wouldn't take it off during the night. I found that quite helpful.
