This song was playing in his room. . . To this day I can't bring myself to go to his grave without breaking down. Screaming for God to give him back to me. I have been searching for this version for so long.... It has a very powerful and profound emotional pull. That piano cries beautifully along with his voice; it delivers a level of heartbreak few experience.
It's a unending glory that evangelicals sing this in their church sunday rock concerts, wearing their casual daily wear. Leonard surely got a kick out this, a King among subversive poets.

Whoever sings this song, it flowers a different colour of beauty. It awakens deepest love of the singer and the listener. So it's always beautiful and can't be distorted.

Leonard Cohen would disagree. He crowned k.d. Lang as the owner of the song now.
This will always be my favorite version of this song, the timing, the placement of the notes, the passion in his voice, are all things that put this song far above the other versions...however the meal worms and crickets creep me out a bit

The Buckley version is incredibly pretty, but the beauty of the performance works against the song. Cale's version is a more complete package.
@@richardfife1601Thought I was the only person in the world who didn't think Jeff Buckley's version was the the best. "Too pretty" is a good description. To me it feels like a dirge rather than an anthem to surviving life, love and loss. (Beautiful guitar playing though).

This version is, in my opinion, the best one. The way he sings it feels 'weak', and not in a bad way. The weak, tired, and broken sound that perfectly suits the song.

100% Agree. The Pentatonix cover that youtube keeps recommending utterly fails on this. They're all great singers, but they had to make the song sound "powerful" which is just not the way to do this song.
Not weak. Broken, cold, tired, like a man who has lived it and regrets it but cherishes it. Like the johnny cash hurt cover. It's something only age and experience can portray correctly.
John Cale is literally one of the most genius songwiters, musicians, lyricists and producers to ever walk the earth, this was merely a cover, a great cover but he was written even greater songs.

Best cover of this song IMHO because he stayed true to the original composition and has a great tenor voice, while LC had some shortcomings vocally. The 1st verse, when he lyrically announces the chord changes on piano as he sings them, is just pure genius.

Leonard Cohen never thought he had the voice to sing even his own songs and saw himself as more of a poet and lyricist than a singer. His favorite version was kd lang's.
Neither "Minor Fall" nor "Major Lift" are actual musical terms.
And that's what's so nice about writer's, of all types, they're not technically uptight and are able to color our lives with more than just black and white whenever speaking of "matters of the Heart", as the poet L. C. did with passion.
Oh, and Matters of the Heart aren't really medical terms.
Janis was said to have "shortcomings". But what's so fabulous about music and the various colors of the lyrics, musical instruments, expertise of the musicians, and the singers themselves, is the prue enjoyment we consumers can keep on having from the likes of these "shortcoming" technically non-perfect" singers due to the facts of their souls in belting out those words. Sadly, many people just don't know how to enjoy their gifts and miss the whole point of music. 😢

I heard this in 1992, on the Leonard Cohen tribute, I'm Your Fan. The simplicity was what won me over: a man with a weathered voice, accompanied by piano. It was beautiful, poignant, and inimitable. Yes, I have heard several covers, but this is one that I always return to.
This video has added more to the song:The tension between creation and destruction; beauty and decay; love and death. A true memento mori, disguised as a hymn for agnostics and heretics. I'm shattered.

If I recall, Leonard Cohen wrote many different verses for "Hallelujah " Depending on who sings l, it becomes a different song.

Yes...and no. This is by far the best reinterpretation of this song, but then you have surely listened to Cale´s fantastic versions of Heartbreak Hotel or Pablo Picasso. Always rearranging the songs and coming up with new versions. Pure genius. And then there are other artists with great covers that sometimes outclass the original versions. I think the deep voice makes the song better, it fits more.

Humble and happy enough enough to be playing with much lesser schooled performers. He's always been able to master any instrument he touches. Obviously you all know Nick Was just learning the piano a year before this. Kind of butchered the timing of his own Ship Song. But these 3 together??? Chemistry Clicks Fluid. Thanks for this post. John Cale's version was the first version I came across. I think the first version you come across is the version that means the most to you.

Love John with that axe chopping up those baby pianos. Reminiscence to the Croyden gig back in 1977 where John Cale beheaded a chicken live on stage and threw the carcass into the audience while performing Elvis Presley´s Heartbreak Hotel. Pogo dancing stopped instantly, and his band who were all vegetarians walked right off the stage ending the tour. Cale later said that it was the most effective show-stopper he ever came up with.
His voice is somehow stronger now than it was in the 70s.

Just watched an episode of Cold Case that ended with this song, and I have cried so much! The song moved me to pieces! Besides Mr. Leonard Cohen's (of course,) this is the BEST rendition I've heard BY FAR!! (And as much as I love this song, I'm almost certain I've heard them all!) John Cale has a beautiful voice! This is my favorite version of 'Hallelujah'. PERFECT! LOVE IT!

Cale has written some powerfull ballads himself. Check out Dying On The Vine, I Keep A Close Watch (Music For A New Society version), Chinese Envoy, Amsterdam or Antartica Starts Here amongst many other great ballads he's written. Both,studio recorded or live renditions of these songs reveal a true master in John Cale.
