  • This project is about the DEconstruction of the first Robe a la Franciase I ever sewed. My goal is to free up the large about of silk yardage trapped in this gown I'll never wear again and turn it into a brand new dress!
Why? Most importantly, I'm hoping to make people think about historical re-use. This practice was common in the eighteenth century and is a good lesson for modern historical costumers. It's recycling...and in the end you get a bunch of "free" fabric and a new dress!
This video is Part 1 of the project, where I introduce you to the original gown, dismantle it, and begin turning it into a new outfit.
Please let me know if you have any questions about this in the comments and I will be happy to answer them!
NOTE: I am aware the ratio of this video isn't great for RUclips, however I filmed these videos with the intention of using them on Instagram and only realized after the fact that I wanted to share them here. I promise I'll fix this in future videos!
In this video, I reference the American Duchess Guide to 18th Century Dressmaking, which is available here: tinyurl.com/y6... (this is an affiliate link)

it’s oddly soothing to see the seams comes apart so smoothly. I have had many a battle with my seam ripper and fabric and it did not go so easy lol

Thank you! It's funny how we often feel like we know each other even when we don't! I remember going to costume college the first time and meeting people in person and being so delighted just by watching them talk since I was only used to seeing still images of them!

I love hearing the silk move. There really is no other fabric that sounds quite as good.

Thank you so much! It's really making me think about my costume wardrobe. I have a lot of dresses that could be turned into something new!

Good for you to look at your wardrobe and turn 'not so happy with the result' into a new project. The advantage also being that you learn from your beginners' mistakes. That is the best way to become a better seamstress!
I was realy amused to see you work at this very elegant dress wearing a pair of purple cloggs! ;-) Please do not be insulted by this remark. I am not being mean, it was very cute to see.

Hahaha! Thank you! The floors in my studio are concrete covered over by a very thin carpet, so the rubber clogs give me some extra cushioning to keep my feet, hips, and back happy :)
