The ultimate street/trials bike?

- I've wanted this for years! I had hoped that with the resurgence of street trials, a dj style trials bike with front suspension would emerge. Nothing has materialized.
I couldn't wait any longer, so I went deep into my bank account and built up this rig. It's a real MTB trials bike. A blast from the past, but with modern technology. I hope it rides as well as I think it will!
Is it the ultimate rig? Not for everyone...but it might be for me. Спорт
Yes James this is fantastic, and will have a few of these newer street riders scratching there heads but to me and the other older riders this is spot on, I can’t wait to see you ride it, .....and that rear hub 😱😱😍😍
Great James ... I have been following you for a while from Italy ... for me you are a great source of inspiration ... today I was talking to a friend about the idea of using a 22/16 relationship as you do in the Street Trial on a Dirt bike and then tonight I saw your video ...
That is the perfect all-round bike for street/trials/park.
That thing is Gnarly! Stoked to see you riding that thing!
This is definitely my favorite bike on RUclips. So versatile. Gave me so many ideas haha!
awesome bike
Holy shit I fucking love this bike. Always wanted one like that
Great ! Can t wait to see you riding it, but does the bb height permit to do hook up ?
So you've got the Hydra. I'm curious as to how this'll perform on a trials rig. I've been riding it for two months on my Enduro and so far, it hasn't let me down and yes, the sound is insane. :) I have done some trials moves on it and in the beginning, the instant engagement is very weird. By the way. You should get the Trickstuff Trixer 2.0, once it's available. You can do bar spins forever with this thing. Sam Pilgrim does.
Thx JB 4 ur AWEsum Bike Check! still learnin' 'bout DJ vs. Trials bikes. Brilliant rear sprocket setup! SupaDope Wheelz!
You wanted to save weight by using a 9 speed chain instead of the stronger SS chains... but you went back to heavy with an ever so slightly thicker "E-rate" chain. Did you need the clearance for the double gear in the back?
That’s pretty sweet, and unique. Did you look at the oneup threaded edc top cap? I would have thought that would be a good option for brake hose routing for bar spins?
I had this top cap kicking around, it had a hole in it already but I cut a slot out so I can easily take it off to change stem set-up without removing the olive on the brake line. A threaded top cap would be ideal!
How do you set up you chain tension?
Do you pull your drop out back every time you change your gear from DJ gear to Street trials?
Yes I do :)
Looks like a sweet ride. What are the advantages and trade offs in going the DJ route versus something like an Inspired Hex? I almost built up a DJ to do trials but was scared I was screwing up and ended up with a Hex instead. I suck so I’m sure it doesn’t matter. Cheers
The dirt jump bike is far more planted. It likes to be on 2 wheels, and you feel "in" the bike. It is better for dj tricks of course. On the hex, you feel more on top of the bike. It will pivot onto one wheel with ease in comparison, and it will be easier to hold the position once the front or back wheel is in the air. It's in between a dj bike and a pure competition trials bike, so trials moves are easier on it.
Very impressive trial skills on such short bike! Are there any tips for comfortable body position with short stem? Especially for lower back when doing jumps from rear wheel like sidehop, gap.
The best advice I can give is to let the bike ride the way it likes. This one loves 2 wheels, and feels springy when on the rear for a short period of time, but it quickly gets tired. So I try to keep it happy by not spending much time on the rear wheel ;)
For lower back, bent arms are key. Keep bent arms and straight back and you are good usually.
Much better. Get on one killer bike and rule the DH constructions too.

Im riding a Specialized P3 2016 DJ doing trials and dirt jumping... question i have is would you think its will work for me to run a 180mm back disc... the bike came out with a 140mm disc?
I am scared of braking my disc mounts on the bike and i know you have a P3 before.
Currently im running a 160mm disc
Hey! I ran a 160 on my p3 and the drop-outs kept getting loose when I did trials, but the brake was super strong. If you grease the bolts and check them often you could totally try a 180, just don’t tell specialized if you need to warranty it ;)
Stupendous bike! What top cap are you using?
2310Ole an old specialized p3 cap. You can drill out any cap though.
@@jamesbtrials thanks, good to know, i'll give it a try!
I wish the old james would return ,if only for a little while :(
get a comp bike for summer ;)
rig looks good ,cant wait for vidwas
I'm trying to bring my bike count down to 3 total, sacrifices must be made :(
Is there only one thing I didn't understand... how would you use 28/22 with the same chain and a gearbox? I hope to see a video where you show this thing ...
28-22 works with just the horizontal drop-outs. 28-12 requires a tensioner to take up the slack in the chain. I'll show it in a video soon.
@@jamesbtrials Ok thanks...also I would also like to pass the front brake cable into the steering tube ... if you please also show this procedure. I understand that you have drilled and modified the headset ... have you also changed the spider of the fork?
@@mickmaca7 Yes, both the star-nut and the top-cap need to have a hole big enough to pass the line through. You will need to drill/cut both. I was able to find a 3-sided star-nut that had a big enough space, but I still needed to drill the top cap.
How are you liking the brakes?
Now that they are bedded in, they are really good. Great power and modulation. Some noise when wet though.
James Barton Sounds cool, I am in the market for some new brakes, they levers look a nice shape. Which model are they?

Similar.
⚖️What’s the weight? I’d guess something like ~ 23.5 lbs. 👉🔒
Not sure, it's heavier than my P.3 was partly due to the front brake and bigger tires.
180mm rotors???
