Trash Talkers (Rolling Stone) Tool‘s first album sounded like nothing else at the time. Dark, mysterious, angry, complex, meticulously crafted and loaded with oddly amorphous song structures, 1993’s Undertow confounded both music critics (many of whom tried to lump the band in with the then-popular grunge movement) and early Tool fans who’d been attracted to the more aggressive, metallic sounds of ’92’s Opiate EP, the band’s first official release.

As a progressive metal musician, I can tell you. They play together and probably write (compose) the song as a band and rehearse and then play their tracks in the studio, like Smokey said, with the drums first. They typically don't make up the song in the recording session. The musicians almost always have it down note for note by then. Usually. ;) Memorizing music isn't too difficult by the way... As a musician, you can forget how to play your own old songs and basically you just need to memorize the songs that are relevant at the moment like playing an upcoming live set or playing an entire album you're about to record. Most of the time musicians have to relearn songs they haven't played in a while. Haha
As far as the HOW they come up with it... basically they bring their individual ideas to their writing sessions and then typically add their contributions as a group. As they play they stop fora second and will be like, “oh, you know what would be good here?”. And “Oh, I have an idea for that section”... and then it just builds from there until it feels like it’s done.

You guys...seriously. this is why TooL army said from the get-go, please start from opiate & undertow first before diving into something as intricate as 10,000 days & newest fear inoculum. To us- we've watched the progression. I love that you love chunky old TooL. That's the point. Thats who they were before they morphed into this beautiful, tribal situation that they are now. I still love that chunky old shit, it's still relevant & could easily be received well today. Full on rippers. Crushing it still.

The majority of Tool’s stuff are concept albums , and the songs work around the concept. So it makes sense to have a self titled song. And Undertow has different meanings, a current of water below the surface moving in a different direction. But also can mean an implicit aspect or emotion that underlying the superficial aspects of something.

Something people either forget or don’t know is that by the time this album was released in 1993, Tool had already been playing these songs live for at least a half decade before they were signed.
Tool formed in 1988, released their demo “72826” in 1991, which on a side note had slightly different versions of both “Crawl Away” and “Sober” on it, got signed to a contract and recorded both the Opiate EP and the Undertow album in 1992, Opiate was released later that year with the release of Undertow in 1993.

I remember when I was young thinking that this was about drugs, but there are songs of such a spiritual nature that never made sense until I went through that experience, still am!. In his earlier works, he speaks of the voice or the calling, or the snake (which isn't satan) refers to kundalini shakti, or the feminine snake like energy that rises up the spine and produces strange life changing and ecstatic states. Knowing about all of the occult lyrics that they use in their music and if you go look up nearly every tool song lyrics were written by the entire band. Knowing that maynards into the occult, danny is in thelema and another order I forget what. Two of his earlier songs where he talks about the snakes voice that temps and drains him, then songs like 46 and 2 about jungs allusion to tramsfmutation alchemy of the spirit, extra chromosomes of the super human. All.of his earlier works were a spiritual transformation (the hard shit) their middle works about experience and how to get there (inside of spiritual experience) anagrams, alchemical symolism, alluding to his own symbolic forms of understanding of deity. I know that nobody on here is going to even remotely agree with me, but I believe that one or more of them had a kundalini awakening, which they show in their videos and the likes of which are superbly profound and hard to grasp without ever experiencing. That why all of their songs sound like ethereal drug like ecstatic states. I have experienced that for years now. It's like tools music is now a complete mirror of my spiritual life. I now realise more members in bands have had similar experiences talking about kundalini, gojira ouroborus, for instance. Serpent of light, crawling stately along the spine,..... Yea....

    10. "Disgustipated" (Song ends at 6:45. Sounds of crickets chirping can be heard for 7 minutes and 5 seconds at 13:50 a hidden message plays while the crickets continue until the end.)
There were tons of Easter eggs in the artwork for the album, I'd recommend checking out.
"Disgustipated" was listed as track #69 on the CD (basically with 60 individual blank tracks at 1 second long leading up to it). Many Tool fans might write it off as a track not to be taken seriously... but in the context of the time this album was released, this was making a strong point of "this is art and we are not your average rock band... we will make you to listen with an open mind!"
PS - "Sober" and "Prison Sex" were the singles off the album and both had music videos

Their songwriting in Undertow is akin to how most bands would make an album today, with equal contribution from every member throughout the process. Maynard had an early version of Sober prior to joining up with Adam before their first ep. From Aenima onwards; their songwriting process involved the guitar and bass riffs being created first, the drums then finding the rhythm within the riffwork and finally off to Maynard for lyrics and completion. What Adam and Justin are able to create, Danny can then translate it all for us to make sense of as his drumming does really well in hiding the time signature changes throughout. Their creative approach to their songwriting is something I think anyone would want to have, it's truly incredible to see how elite they were even when they began.

So this wraps up the Undertow Album. I think you guys should finish Opiate. Then go to Parabol/Parabola then finish your journey with, IMO, the best piece of work Disposition/Reflection/Triad. Then you guys should do the albums in order cause I’ve noticed you ask about stories and the lead ins to songs. I think when you listen to the albums all of the way through you’ll get a better perspective of the vision of the band.

    Life is the opiate
We're all caught in life's undertow, and without ALL of the Tools/songs as an aenima, we're lost and just fumbling around, getting nothing done. Without our third eye open, we just scramble around on the lateralistic spiral of confusion and pain. Each Tool/song helps us like an inoculum in another area of life's myriad of troubles and curiosities, to alleviate our fears. Just the thought of it all makes me salival. Yeah, I saw you guys wondering how they make the song. Maynard has said that the band makes the song and he then gets it sent to him and he writes the lyrics. He’ll also make criticisms to the music as well when he gets the music as he’s working. They’re amazing.

I'm pretty sure most of the songs especially from Lateralus on start as Danny just jamming to a random Tick on a metronome. Then then justin and adam just add their layers

Undertow is track #7. Notice it's listed before Flood. I guess you go under first and then the Flood consumes you. Cold and black is the demon. It's also interesting Swamp Song is before Undertow, and then Flood. Lots of references to water and drowning. Maynard was a Baptist I believe and was likely baptized. So a lot of religious references there with water, flooding, cleansing, getting caught in the undertow, etc.

Maynard said he usually gets the music and then puts the lyrics to them. He says it’s like a puzzle he needs to configure with the music. But this is all stuff he said in joe Rogan podcast a year ago.

On the studio stuff, they have rehearsed it so much at this point they can just feel it, and usually a live playthrough is done first for everyone to play along to when recording their individual parts. Being Tool though, may be different, but back then I would say it was likely that way.

Fear Inoculum is the first title track that was the first song on the album. But they've taken the name of all their albums from a song on the album

There are several songs that have the same name as the band and the album. ie. Black Sabbath, Bad Company, Iron Maiden, Body Count, Porno For Pyros etc.

In my opinion, this song is about Doubt. He's speaking a out making this album - "two times in" on their second album. Doubt is screaming at him, always trying to make another great song, another great album.

From what I understand (picking up on the long progress of making music to a song) the guitar parts of Tempest were already created during the Undertow album recordings. The problem was that the band had too much difficulties building the other instruments around it.
During the progress of the recording of Fear Innocolum the guitar parts were brought back from the shelves and it became a 16 minutes long song.
So basically it took roughly 25 years to finally make it a song.
Saying that making a title track the same as the album is 'lazy'. Queen did the same on their last 3 albums. Tupac did it with a couple of them. I see it more as giving the audience an explanation on their motivation of where the title is coming from to understand the album more.
Enough jabbering. Great reaction! Peace out.

Intolerance is the first track because when you hear the first audio part it's someone drowning or losing air in their scuba tank.. it's about how being in the military at west point lead him to believe that he wasn't right for that environment.
