      Ehhh…. In my opinion, the Trinity test should have been CGI. He tried so hard to edit around it and used forced perspective to make it seem bigger, but it still looks like a small gasoline explosion rather than the detonation of a nuclear device.

    Fun fact: Per the transcripts of his testimony, Hill was not only disgusted by the treatment of Oppenheimer but also had serious misgivings about Strauss' leadership abilities based on his time as head of the AEC, characterizing him as a micromanager who frequently ignored the advice of the very scientists he brought in to furnish him with information, and prioritized secrecy and controlling the flow of information over transparency and a well-informed scientific community and the general public. Whilst Hill recognized that Strauss may well have believed this was for the greater good, he felt it nevertheless hampered the work of his fellow scientists and did not reflect the qualities best suited to a government official. Hill also took issue with Strauss' attempts to further his credibility for the nomination by citing the approval of scientists who were no longer alive to speak for themselves, such as Hill's close friend and colleague Enrico Fermi, as well as what he saw as Strauss' failure/unwillingness to vigorously repudiate the claims of a book published in 1950 that Hill saw as a deliberate hatchet job intended to undermine and discredit Oppenheimer and throw the Los Alamos team under the bus for the Russians obtaining the A-bomb and not pushing harder on the H-bomb; as the only person quoted by the book who did not publicly disavow its conclusions, Strauss supposedly criticized it only on the basis that its publication was not at the time politically expedient, and that it should have been published long after those named in it were dead (and unable to contradict it).

      Also...
      The elder member of the Gray Board, Ward Evans - the one who smiles warmly at Kitty as she jousts verbally with Robb - did indeed write the minority report, the single member of the three-person panel who dissented against revoking Oppenheimer's Q clearance. As much as the proceeding was a kangaroo court, at least one member of the board was on his side.
      Ward Evans' minority report was concise and sharply worded. He criticized the AEC for investigating Oppenheimer for charges on which he had previously been cleared in 1947. Oppenheimer "did not hinder the development of the H-bomb, and there is absolutely nothing in the testimony to show that he did." Evans acknowledged that Oppenheimer had left-wing and even Communist friends, but "the evidence indicates that he has fewer of them than in 1947, when he was last cleared." Moreover, "he is not as naïve as he was then. He has more judgment... it is better now than it was in 1947, and to damn him now and ruin his career and his service, I cannot do it." He concluded that failure to clear Oppenheimer would be "a black mark on the escutcheon of our country."

    @31:49 Germany did have a nuclear program, however, it was never remotely as well funded or organized as the American program and never came anywhere close to producing an operational nuclear bomb. The Allies never really had a good picture of how far along the Nazi program was so the race to produce nuclear weapons first was in reaction to what was perceived as a real threat of Nazi weapons being developed and used. Russia (soon to become the USSR) jumped in late and (with allegedly stolen information from the US) developed nuclear weapons shortly after the end of WWII. That Russian program was not a reaction to the German program but more one towards the US (and other Western Countries) and their (accurate) hostility towards the spread of communism, particularly in Eastern Europe.

    The film really turned out fantastic thanks to the actors and director. The only funny thing about such scenarios is the distortion of history. This film claims that the war ended thanks to the United States, which bombed Hiroshima and Nagosaki in Japan, although the bloodiest battles took place in Europe, which was liberated by the Soviet Union, putting an end to the war and storming Berlin, which is extremely inconvenient to remember in the Western world these days. . However, for the ending, I am ready to applaud Nolan every time after the credits. The message of the film is very strong and... unfortunately relevant right now.

I still don't agree with it but I can see that if they really thought they'd never surrender thinking that was the answer. @@Maxime_G ok. I guess I should have said I was rooting for him to lose his security clearance. I know the movie wanted us to somehow sympathize with him but it was still well made even if glorified him.

    • @Maxime_G
      @Maxime_G 15 дней назад

      @@antoinettelopes well... It wasn't glorifying him. If it was, then the whole security clearance thing wouldn't be there.
      It was more complicated than that, it wasn't glorifying nor denuncing a man, it was just... telling his story, his view, his psychology both subjectively and objectively... And shows that he at a moment of his life he had been against merciless political bastards like Strauss...
      We Can debate on if the fact that his security clearance was necessary or not, we weren't there to have a perfect conclusion and answer, and nobody was to have it. However, we can't root for the people responsible for it because of how and why they really did it. And it wasn't because of real "national security risk" but completely out of personal vendictivness... Which is different.
      And saying what you're saying about the destruction of the world and his theory... Well, he's not entirely in charge of that, he didn't have any choice, and it was not the only Time in science history where you can't completely erase a terrible possibility
