Just for reference: May 2009 was when Platinum was still the newest pokemon game and HGSS were only just announced. Crazy to think that this build existed during that time with some finalized gen 5 designs being present.

It's pretty common to have two games developed right to each other. For example, the previous leaks demonstrated the Let's Go and Sw/Sh games were developed at the same time (the Sw/Sh build from Dec 22 2017 has LGPE assets).
In reality, they are Pokémon Centers because the graphics were not reloaded by passing through a gate. The buildings are actually there, you just need to open another screen like the bag or Pokémon menu and then exit out of it.

I don't know what the "Masuda Camera" is, but you reminded me that there's actually a camera setting in the debug menu I forgot to include in this. Lets you move around all over, even under the map lol.
I dont know why but it genuinely suprised me when Pinwheel forest’s song is basically exact as the final one but completely unfinished, the only other song that was incomplete was the battle theme and Castelia being whatever that was
Pretty sure Castelia is the Battle Subway theme. I'm assuming they reused it elsewhere after polishing it because they realized it didn't fit the city's theme.

But this information was gleaned through a gigaleak, and I get the feeling everything that was revealed was without complete intention and more or less random - whatever they could get their hands on perhaps? It feels in bad faith, forcing out precious information that could have been found in a more satisfying way to the masses as if it would make them happy. This is just how I see it though, I’ve been going out of my way to avoid the leaks and anything about it - so in the end I have no clue.

Honestly so many of these area designs seem so much more open and better designed than what we got in the final product. I get they probably had to change things to fit certain needs like a theme or lack of storage space, but still. Gen 5’s main complaint was that the story made it feel guided and channeled. More open areas like this could have helped with that.
If I had to guess they were probably testing out the audio qualities of the Nintendo DS. It’s very static-y which probably led them to removing anything vocal but they were probably using a Japanese pop song here for inspiration on the Pokemon musical
Why? That's pretty standard for sequel development, using what you already have as placeholders and testing before you get the new stuff in. It's why you can find gen 2 music tracks in the gen 3 games and why I take any and all "x was supposed to come back" in data mines with a huge grain of salt.
Its crazy that the 3rd fossil of gen 5 (or something) was removed after having a completed model and animations. its at 16 minutes, its model can be found online without the chimchar mask
Pokémon Center City LMAO what was the last part at the musical??! Also, we were robbed of that "prehistoric critter", like, it looks a bit like a fossilmon and a bit like early idea for Chesnaught but way better...
I wonder, would this version of the prototypes be able to do multiplayer with the retail carts? Wiimfi? Game Sync? (the program is called "Entralinked") Or would this iteration of the networking code (if there is any at this stage) be too different than the retail gen 5 games? If local trades are possible, I wonder what the RNG algorithms look like. (Would pokemon caught in this version be able to pass into HOME?)
Can't quite remember if Castelia's BGM appears anywhere else in the release version of the game, but I kinda wish they kept it similar to that. It had a bit of a more gritty and gothic design compared to the release build.
Wow, this has a lot of promise. Hopefully they put more work into it and it gets to the market some day.
Imagine if the game pops off so well that they make direct sequels or something.

I'm surprised by just how many concepts this prototype had that made it into the final game.
One of those small concepts that stands out to me is the adaptive overworld music adding percussion when moving.
