I don't think Al is complex figure just because he offers Woody a complex conundrum. His motivations are simple: he wants money, and, to him, Woody represents money. Things can offer hard decisions to characters without being complex themselves. An avalanche might force you to choose between saving your father and saving your mother. It can create a hard decision for you, but an avalanche doesn't have complex motivations. I'm not sure that Al is really the antagonist of Toy Story 2--Stinky Pete seems to embody the role more. Anyway, that was real nitpicky, but this was your best video so far! I really liked it. Your explanation of the muddled plot of Nut Job was really smart and entertaining.

Fair points and good observations! I think instead of suggesting that Al himself is more complex, I meant to say that his role in the story becomes more layered and interesting than the similar role shared by the mayor of Oakton, for example, because even though Al really does only have a selfish motivation (as per your point), his selfish actions do inadvertently offer Woody a solution to his problem of "mortality," but I think your point still stands; your avalanche example is actually spot on, in that neither the avalanche nor Al is aware of it's target's motivation. That's where Stinky Pete comes in, and I think you're probably right there too. Although both Al and Pete do qualify as "forces of antagonism" since they both get in Woody's way at one point or another, Pete is actively sabotaging Woody's course of action whereas Al is just kind of doing his thing. Look at the movie Jaws for instance - although the shark is the primary force of antagonism, it's just an avalanche, right? it doesn't care about human affairs; it just wants a meal. The mayor of the town (funny enough) is the one who's more actively aware of, and working against, Chief Brody. In cases like Toy Story 2 and Jaws, I think it's kind of necessary to have the role of antagonist shared by a few characters to cover all of the bases. Good discussion, and I'm glad you enjoyed the video - thank you!

A good example of antagonist =/= villain is an obscure PlayStation 2 game called Klonoa 2: Lunatea's Veil. The protagonists need to collect some mystical doodads to save the world, and Leorina gets in the way because she also wants to save the world, but knows more about the problem than the protagonists do. They keep stealing the doodads from each other.

Excellent example! I haven't heard of that game, but the storytellers were doing something right for sure. :)

In all seriousness, the English script isn't bad, just oddly-worded. ("So Klonoa... is the name of the Dream Traveller.")

I just discovered your channel today, and I think it's one of the best animation channels I've seen in a long time. The amount of detail you put into each video is admirable. Just a thing: The Emoji Movie has a "jerk-type" main character? Unless you're refering to Hi-5, I don't really think Gene is. Anywho, it's good to see a channel that doesn't focus on shitting over Teen Titans Go! all the time. Suscribed!

Thanks so much for the comment! I appreciate it, and welcome aboard! I think you could make an argument that Gene doesn't necessarily belong with the rest of those characters. To be honest, I haven't seen The Emoji Movie, so I was mostly lumping him into the "unlikable" category just based on my impression of him from the trailers. But I could be off!

Best example I can think of when it comes to hero villain dynamics is Mr Glass from Unbreakable as he is obviously 100% in the wrong but you still very much understand why he did what he did.

I actually checked the animation company's website, www.redrover.co.kr/en/business_en/animation , the other day. While the site is not translated the best, you can clearly get the summary of the third movie that they want out next year. I honestly think they should have stopped after the sequel, but that's the movie business, I suppose. To be entirely honest, I kinda fell in love with the first film. I loved Will Arnett, Katherine Heigl and Maya Rudolph in the film and parts of the story never failed to make me laugh. The sequel, however, was one of the worst films I had watched in a while. The animation, storytelling and character interactions were questionable, to keep it simple.
Sorry, I kinda went on a rant there. I loved your video! It gave me a lot of things to think about, and I think you just earned yourself a subscriber! Have a lovely day/night!!
