  • Here's my review of the excellent and task-oriented Spyderco Dragonfly 2 Salt. This little knife is an amazing achievement of performance vs. size & weight. At only 1.2 oz., with less than 2" of cutting edge, the Dragonfly is great in hand, affords a powerful and secure grip, and has a steel and blade profile which make it an absolutely wicked utility blade. On top of that, the Dragonfly Salt is virtually impervious to rust and corrosion, due to its use of Japanese H1 Steel.
    This blade appears on the channel courstesy of Campfiretalk, an old and dear friend of mine, and a great supporter of the channel. If you're not subscribed to his channel, you need to be. Here's the link to his channel page:

    I just love this little knife. I have a couple versions of their Dragonfly. The H1 is a bit soft, but the edge sharpens right up very easily with just a few passes on the stone. So light it disappears in my pocket, and because of the Spidey hole, it performs like a much larger knife. Awesome daily carry.

      I was on the fence about buying this knife because I didn’t know if it would be useful as an everyday carry tool, and I had a suspicion that the Dragonfly was more of a gimmick than anything else. Your channel is where I go to find recommendations for tools, and because of this comment, I’ll probably end up picking one of these up soon. Thanks for commenting!

    I've had a Pacific Salt as my EDC for about 4 years, and the H1 steel is great. No rust, and holds a good edge as advertised.

    I just bought one used on the second hand market. I paid less than half of what it would cost new and I love it. It was dirty when I got it. I cleaned it up with an old toothbrush and some dawn dish soap. Rinsed it good with hot water, air compressor dried it, then oiled the blade, pivot, and lock. Wow, WOW! What a fantastic knife. I was glade to see that you did a review on this knife Rob. I have been a subscriber for a long time.

    I just ordered this blade. Your video sold me :) Will be my fourth Spydie, and probably my favorite. Very nice edge polishing on yours also. I have the Ladybug with the HAP40 steel, which is incredible blade steel. It's the sharpest thing I've ever held in my hands. I'm a tiny knife lover. I've got a Manix2 which is great also, but there's something amazing about how well very skinny, ridiculously sharp blades slice through material. Nice video sir 👍

    I just ordered a salt 1 fully serrated, will come in tomorrow. Love the bright yellow and I love spyderco's serrations been edc'ing a stainless handeled serrated delica since 2 years now (I know you're more of a plain edge guy, I like both)

    Thanks for your time on that one. I like to know know how a knife takes an edge, usually I need to buy one to find out. This could be my first spyderco. My rotation is usually Case slip joints. Thanks again!

    I have had this knife in my Amazon shopping cart "saved for later for months" I love the fact it can resist rust so well.
    I have been exploring the use of Camellia oil for the past few months now also. So far so good "no rust" but you have to pick out additional pocket lint.

    Another excellent TAP knife review. I used to have a DF2 in G10... really liked it, but found that I carried it less and less over time... so I sold it. However, if I was to get another it would be this exact one (ie, in H1). Despite the FRN (which I am very "meh" about)... that steel brings this knife home! I have a the Salt Ladybug3 Hawkbill in H1 and its pretty amazing stuff. Holds its serrated edge very well, has been through the washing machine a couple times with no issue, been boiled to dye the FRN, etc. Very durable little knife! If I was to add another Salt to my Pelican case it'd probably be either a DF2 or the Salt I.

    Wife and I have one of these in our backpacks, reg version not the H1. Great choice for ultra light backpacking. Love the shape of that Spyderco FFG leaf blade and the vg10 is a nice working steel.

    i got it in my pocket most of the time, no worries for water, or sweat, amazing blade, amazingly lightweight .. great tool, and that H1 blade is really amazing, I have not tested in sea, but I guess it does not generate any rust at all, one of my fav spydercos

    How many times you been stabbed? I've been stabbed with an exacto blade, about an inch and it was no joke at all. dragon fly isn't the bestestestest choice but you get the 2 inch blade jammed in your neck or arm or leg and you prob won't be laughing

    I started a thread over on Spyderco forums about the H1 and was surprised to find out that there is a big difference between the plain edge blade and the serrated edge blade. Basically the SE version has far superior edge retention than it's PE counterpart. I can PM you the thread if interested.

    Good looking edge & great table top review buddy.
    In my review of this blade I mentioned a last ditch defensive option, but believe I also mention my go to would be pepper spray. Man did that create some dialog : ) It wasn't meant to be a primary weapon just a "better than using you fingernails tool".
    Any excuse is right : ) but it really does excel in a high corrosion environment & works great on jobs bigger than its size.

    • @TheApostleP
      @TheApostleP  10 лет назад

      Of course we all knew you wouldn't choose a Dragonfly as a primary defense weapon, but I just couldn't resist the temptation to embellish the story at your expense. Merry Christmas, buddy :)

      TheApostleP talking applications for this knife, you hit the nail on the head with beach/diving knife & hiking. I had those in mind & this little knife is just so sporty.

      I think the Pacific would definitely be my choice in a very humid or salty environment, but where I live, even D2 is stainless most of the time.

    I've had my eye on this knife for a while I just wonder if it might be too small. As someone who lives in a warm salty environment the pacific salt is in my pocket often.

    We finally disagree on something. I love that pocket clip!
    Yeah the "British Racing Green" sprint run had the ZDP-189 steel.
    There is something about the size and weight of this guy that draws me into it, but the price point for a 2 in blade was always a turn off.
    You are selling me on the H1 though, would love to see it in Spyderco's translucent blue handle.

    • @TheApostleP
      @TheApostleP  10 лет назад

      I don't dislike the wire clip for how it retains the knife in pocket. In that regard it's excellent. My only issue is that on a small knife like this one, where I need to use it as an anchor point for deployment, it just bothers me that it moves.

    • @Zechs00GT
      @Zechs00GT 10 лет назад

      Wow, So after I read this I went and checked out my wife clip. Its on a larger knife so never had an issue with it but it really does flex like crazy. Its not that its lose or moving on the screw, it just flexes because, well it is a wire. I can see your point if you were anchoring on it, it would not make me confident in it's strength.

    That's a very cool little knife and I can't think of too many task that it couldn't deal with. Love the way the swedge incorporates into the grind. Being that I'm not a big fan of VG-10, the H1 seems like a good alternative.

    • @TheApostleP
      @TheApostleP  10 лет назад +1

      I'm definitely more of a ZDP guy, as an alternative to VG-10, but in a coastal or humid climate, I'd be all over that H1!

    What would you suggest for a knife to run with? I live in a not so great area and use my phone on my arm for music and tracking my running. Hence, a potential moving target. In my hand I carry my keys and a small Spyderco lady bug on the key chain but would like something more substantial and water/salt resistant.

    Hello,
    i have been trying to buy a this knife for myself for a long time but i have a problem. I live in Europe so im buying knives from different companies from there. I found a website called EuroKnife.com and they have this knife there. The problem is that they have two salt dragonflies (Two plain edge ones). One is around 95€ an the other is around 80€ but i can't tell the difference. You know a lot more about knives than I do, so I thought you could help me out with this. I just wanna know what makes one more expensive than the other. Im kinda broke so I want to get the best for my money. I hope you can help me with my problem. I would be very thankfull.
    Keep up your great videos!

      A leather strop and some stropping compound will do the job after working down to very fine grit.
