    Years ago my office was about a quarter mile down the road from Kaman's Bloomfield manufacturing and test facility. I loved watching the K-Max flying around the property with Jersey Barrier sized blocks of concrete. Very impressive for such a small aircraft. When the company was trying to seal a deal with the Australians for a different model it was cowboy air show every day.

    does the K-Max have a swashplate as other helicopters or does it just use its rudders to control pitch and roll?

    • @BlythmanInc
      @BlythmanInc  5 лет назад +3

      No swashplate. The blades are fixed to the grip and head. No pitch links are anything. It uses what are called flaperons on the blades and twists the blades for pitch.

    • @KMAXdawg
      @KMAXdawg 5 лет назад +3

      Actually Jonathan, JB is wrong. The K1200 has two "swashplates" that Kaman Aerospace calls "azimuth assemblies" and are located on the bottom of the transmission assembly at each mast location. The azimuths take the movements of the flight controls and associated linkage and convert the inputs from "linear" to "rotational" in the same manner that a conventional swashplate does. The "pitchlinks" run up through the masts to the over center bell cranks, linkages and control rods that run internal through the main rotor blades out to the servo-tabs. They are 32" in length and respond with every pedal, cyclic or collective input accordingly. As the servo-tab moves it causes a resulting movement of the applicable rotor system.

    • @BlythmanInc
      @BlythmanInc  5 лет назад +2

      KMAXdawg is correct. I should of clarified no traditional swashplates. Appreciate you explaining in it.

    @khadijagwen 5 лет назад +9

    Seeing Kmax, I wonder why they bother with other choppers?

    • @germansnowman
      @germansnowman 4 года назад +1

      Khadijah Brown The K-MAX is optimized for lifting capacity. For example, it is quite slow compared to other helicopters. Also, the tilted rotors do pose an increased hazard for passengers and maintenance crew.

    • @manofsan
      @manofsan 4 года назад

      @@germansnowman what about safety & stability? Does it behave well under autorotation due to loss of power, as compared to other helicopters? There are other Kaman-type intermeshing rotor designs besides K-MAX. Do they all suffer from the same slowness and similar shortcomings?

    • @germansnowman
      @germansnowman 4 года назад

      manofsan I am no expert, but from what I have read, it is just as safe as other helicopters in terms of autorotation. It reacts a bit differently though to control inputs and so on, so pilots are trained by Kaman in a Husky (two-seater). I would think that the limitations are inherent to the fundamental design, not just the K-MAX.

      @w8stral 5 лет назад +1

      IF you do NOT want high speed, then intermeshed at an angle(KAMAN) is superior for LIFT/stability/maneuverability. More efficient lift, but has SERIOUS drawback in terms of speed/range. Lots of drag at high speed. Ultimately double contra rotating is superior yet, but is more complicated. Why Kaman IS the workhorse and another batch have been built, but not upgraded over the old.
      You will note, no helos get developed outside of government military contracts(fiddled with? yes). The R&D costs too damned much. Every last Helo in production today came directly out of the military. Military is more interested in Speed/range/maneuverability and payload 2nd. KAMAN gets payload/stability/maneuverability, but... range... not exactly due to its low speed.

  • @IswandaAsmara

    I have never seen this helicopter before. Very unique and different from other conventional helicopters...
    How can the propellers synchronize with each other and what if one of the blades gets stuck? Confused.. :D

    • @BlythmanInc
      @BlythmanInc  5 лет назад +9

      The blades are connected to rotor shafts which run into a transmission. It is all connected with gears which keep them synchronized and preventing them from contacting each other. If one gets stuck as you say they both would get stuck but this wouldn't happen as the transmission is built very robust.

    So do you get twice the lifting power over a single blade, half more then a 4 bladed rotor? You would think the blades that cross over each other wouldn't get much stable air and wash each other out.. if that makes sense.

    • @joshua.merrill
      @joshua.merrill 2 года назад

      I think because of the direction of blade movement on a single rotor, half of the blade has increased lift going forward, then decreased lift going backward. With the dual rotors design, and the tilt, it makes it to where there is a high lift arc on both sides of the aircraft, and the low lift arcs don’t interfere so much. Plus, now you don’t need a tail rotor.

    • @Bendigo1

      If i remember correctly, the lift is not quite twice as much, but it is more than a single rotor design.
