When I first got interested in art it was through watching another reasonably famous artist and he got a big bundle of his brushes and said "You don't need all of these." and threw them in the bin (retrieved them later, I bet.) He suggested - a wide flat brush, a no. 10 sable, a 6 sable, and a nylon rigger.
So off I went to the local art shop and asked about the no 10. sable only to find they didn't stock them. They could order one for me at £138, I think it was. With that I withdrew from the shop and any idea of painting. A couple of years passed before I saw Charles in a TV series and that's when I started because then I knew I could afford it and if it hadn't worked out, my loss on the equipment wasn't that much. Thank you Charlie.
I have bought other brushes since and expensive ones just to see what the difference was, but in all honesty, they make no difference whatsoever. The difference is the artist using them and the excellent guidance he/she gets from experts like Charles.
(I still cringe at the sight of your pallet though. 😝🤢🤮😂)

Another great video, Charlie, as always. Those mutts get in everywhere don't they?!
For anyone reading this who hasn't got Charlie's books - they are well worth the investment. I have a very battered copy of the 'pocket book' that literally goes everywhere with me in my watercolour bag. Santa brought me the new Watercolour Rescue book and together they cover anything you need to know - cheap as chips, too.

Hi Charlie, just watched a video of you painting in a hall in 2002. As usual there were lots of jokes and great painting but seeing you do a section on specific brush "strokes" (I use the term loosely) to do different grasses and trees was great. Wish I'd found painting earlier.

I like how Charles focuses on the drawing first, even down to the twigs on the trees. I never underestimate the importance of the initial stages. Some artists draw in the tree detail later with a rigger, but I find that unless you map out where they are, they can look a little ‘clumsy’.

After watching this snow scene I wonder if you could find the time to do a similar demo using watercolour pencils? I’ve tried using them to reproduce your wc demos but not very successfully. Thank you 🙏🏼 by-the-way, my mum was a Brummie and my dad was from Surrey, so my siblings and I always use both long and short vowels. I love your accent 😊
