- Another upgraded Whelen in the Columbus system! Yay :3
Last week, while I was at the Aquarius Pools in Columbus to get our pool water test for its closure, I decided to stick around for the siren test at noon. I was surprised to discover that this siren had recently been upgraded to an ESC-2030 logic board. I recall reporting it to the EMA a while back when it failed to run for one of the tests, assuming that the batteries had died in it, but apparently, the board was dead and needed to be replaced. Unlike the previously upgraded siren near where I stay, I guess this one had a beef with Thor and got struck by lightning instead of shot by a .45. This brings the total of ESC-2030 equipped sirens in the county to 3 and I want to say 8 overall that run at 560 Hz in alert tone.
I need to get back to recording sirens, haven’t heard one of these in a while
Oh double windup
The ESC controls are old and needed to be replaced
The siren probably took a lightning strike or suffered some power surge that fried the controls. The boards in these sirens aren't falling from age, at least not yet, anyway. The main thing that fails electronic sirens, in general, is really the drivers. The controllers are about as reliable as any modern digital mechanical siren controller.
Do you think they plan to upgrade most of the warning sirens in Columbus?
Nah. They replace the boards on an as-needed basis. There's really no need to do a system-wide upgrade since the existing boards work fine and are compatible with other activation systems if the county ever decides to move from the Motorola system to something else.
