  • Geranium plants (pelargoniums) are an annual in my growing zone. I have been overwintering my geraniums bareroot in my basement (where it's cool and dark but does not freeze) during the winter months. I like to check on my geraniums each month to see if they are rotting, need a little water, etc.

I brought my dormant dry root geraniums up from the basement today. I pulled the dried leaves off. Some dried up stems I trimmed off but the plants were all still alive.
Last season I potted them up and put them in a south facing basement window. But I now have about 15 plants and no room, so I tried your dry root method this season!

Thank you for this. I put mine in storage for the first time and was wondering how to care for them.

What a great video and you explained it so well. Im in N.Y 60 miles from the city. And i just bought 2 geraniums and want to try and save them for next year. So I've been watching videos on how to do it.

Thank you so much. Definitely give overwintering geraniums a try. It's pretty easy and will save you from buying more next year! 😊🌹

PS...My last frost is the third week of April here in western Colorado. My guess is early March to pot them up and put in light?

Late February to early March would be a perfect time for you. If you pot them up with potting mix, give them water, light and fertilizer, they should take off in no time. ♥

Nice video. Thank you. QUESTION: why don’t you remove the leaves at the same time that you remove the flowers and buds? I had a couple of nice big geraniums that I unfortunately threw on the compost pile. This year I’m going to try and overwinter them and see if I can get them to come back.

Hi Linda. Great question. I don't see any harm in removing the leaves before storing the geranium for the winter. I just don't do it due to it taking more time, but you definitely can do it. I'm so glad to hear that you'll be trying to overwinter your geraniums this winter. It's so worth it! ♥🌺

Im pretty sure I waited too long to bring mine in and they were already rotted but I will try again next year:)
