Overwintering Geraniums

  • I save hundreds of dollars every year by overwintering my container plants. The plant I use most is the GERANIUM. This video explains the difference between a seed and zonal geranium, and shows you how to prepare your geraniums for winter storage. I keep my geraniums in pots rather than the dry root method, mostly because I don't know if I will get them back into pots by spring.

In the fall I take mine out of the pot, shake the dirt off the roots, and hang them upside down in the basement. A wire coat hanger pulled into a diamond shape works well. They get no water and no light for months. The leaves turn brown and the plant looks dead, but in the late winter new growth appears, even tiny blooms! In the spring I cut them back, repot them in new soil, start watering, and place them in a sunny window. In late spring I have to repot them because they have grown huge. So I put them in an even bigger pot and set them outside. At first the intense sunshine makes them a bit wilty, but then they get acclimated. Each year they get bigger and more beautiful!

Thanks so much for sharing! I tried your method of overwintering and I was so happy to see the plant pull through until spring. I did have a casualty. But that's ok, it was mostly for an experiment. I've started growing them from seed, with great success. Happy growing!

Why not leave the leaves and flowers and just store the whole plant inside? Do the trimming after the leaves have died off? That way you still get to see some color and it doesn't break your heart to cut the plant to pieces. At least make cuttings from the ones you cut off?

So you don't have to cut them down? Thats good to know. I live in Cleveland and it gets cold , this is the first time im bringing them in

good info, but not entirely correct. A seed geranium can be a zonal geranium, and can also be overwintered as long as they are fertilized and pinched during the season.

I appreciate seeing what you do , but I don't understand why you cut them back like that? I trim mine slightly and put them in front of windows. They get a bit leggy over winter because of lack of light, but I trim them again in the spring before bringing them out again. They give flowers all winter. I love these plants.

I have four kids and a husband I have to live with, I just need the plants to go away for the winter. If it were up to me I'd have plants in every window!

+Holly Grindal Now I understand! I, too, wish I had more space or a greenhouse for wintering plants. It's nice that at least you are able to save them. I totally feel your pain in cutting them back when they are looking so great at the end of summer.

Don't throw them out....pinch the tops and theyget bushierand they grow all year round. I've grown up watching my mom do it since i was small. And they remind me of my grandma from Mexico,an now mom lives in Utah. And now I live in Wyoming and iv got to bring them in every year.

Thank You!!!!! THIS was the answer I've been relentlessly searching for! I was wondering if I could just trim it and move the whole thing inside for the window, like I do with my potted mango and avocado. Tysm!

What is the temperature of your garage in Winter where you store your geranium in its pot and soil? Thanks

Hello, you seem to know well the pelargonium so you could help me. I've had many pelargonium and all of them were infested by virus or bacteria or fungi (blight or wilt or someting like that) that caused the plant to lose its strength, affecting the quality of the flowers and the leaves also. So, as the disease spread to the entire plant, can you use the seeds from an infected plant and grow them disease-free?

INCORRECT INFORMATION!!! Holly, you need to READ ABOUT seed geraniums BEFORE giving advice. As a teacher, you should know that. Seed Geraniums overwinter fine, carry more blooms in summer, and are smaller in stature, which is great for smaller areas in the garden. Do not be so quick to give incomplete information! I hope you have not sent hundreds of seed geraniums to the trash that could have been saved. TISK TISK

So, once your plant is cut way back like this and if leafless, does it need light? Could I put it in my basement for the winter to give it an above freezing, dry place to be?

I received a zonal geranium that had baby leaves coming out from some branches but the whole branch looks dry and when I cut it the branch was hollow, is that normal and can I save the plant?

    • @iamtuwanda
      @iamtuwanda  7 лет назад

mardel3 I think it should still be allive. Maybe get it into some better soil. It may be depleted after a hard summer.

if you store your geraniums in a garage over the winter, how cold does it get in there? We live where it dips down in the minus 20s. hp

Depends on how well your garage is insulated (if at all). I live near Spokane, where it can go below zero for a few days. I have an insulated garage and my potted geraniums do quite well in there. It stays above freezing in my garage throughout the winter. I don't open the garage doors up other than to get my vehicles in/out. In late Jan/early Feb, we start to get slightly warmer and sunnier days and I will put the pots out in the sun (protected from wind) for a few hours. This would be on days where temp gets up to about 40 degrees F or so. I've got two potted geraniums that I've been doing this for probably 8+ years or so; the plants are in great shape and bloom profusely every summer/fall. I do fertilize every few weeks and keep spent blooms pinched off. I believe your winter climate (with temps down to 20 below zero) would make it difficult to overwinter geraniums in your garage unless you have a way to keep your garage temps above freezing. If you have a cool basement, you might try that rather than the garage.

Halina, I meant to add that the way I monitor my garage temperature is to look at my car thermometer when I first start it up in the morning (I keep my car in the garage with the geraniums). Typically it's in the high 30's in my garage during the dead of winter. Of course you can purchase a small inexpensive thermometer to keep in the garage, preferably near the floor if that is where your geraniums will be. Hope that helps.

One of a youtube video said to clip them way back and let them go completely bone dry. Keep them in a sunny spot throughout the winter and only flood them when you want them to bloom then let them go dry again. Anyway, this is what works for me and I have beautiful huge plants yearly.

The plants need more routine grooming. Too many diseased leaves and faded blooms.

INCORRECT INFORMATION!!!! If you are going to teach folks, make sure you give proper info. As a teacher, you should know that. You are dead wrong about seed geraniums. Your homework is to READ ABOUT seed geraniums before you speak about them!

I live 100 miles from Canadian border (Spokane WA) and have overwintered geraniums for 10 years or so. It takes a little effort, but can be done. My garage is insulated and stays above freezing year round. Outdoors we occasionally get down to 5 below zero or so. According to growing zone maps, I'm in zone 6.
