I brought my dormant dry root geraniums up from the basement today. I pulled the dried leaves off. Some dried up stems I trimmed off but the plants were all still alive. Last season I potted them up and put them in a south facing basement window. But I now have about 15 plants and no room, so I tried your dry root method this season!
I did this with my apple blossom geraniums last winter. I put them all (four) in a cardboard box and put them in a small room of my garage that gets around fourty degrees during winter. I spritzed them once a month with a spray bottle. I was amazed that even though they looked horrible when I planted them six weeks before first frost that they started puting out new growth in just a week or two. Only one did not make it and I'm not sure why!
It's pretty neat how geraniums can come back after being dormant and bare root, isn't it? Thanks for sharing your process. Sometimes losses happen but it sounds like most of your geraniums came back which is great! 😊🌸
What a great video and you explained it so well. Im in N.Y 60 miles from the city. And i just bought 2 geraniums and want to try and save them for next year. So I've been watching videos on how to do it.
I like to put the geraniums in my garden after the danger of any frost. I wake up / repot the bare root geraniums about 6-8 weeks before my last frost. Here's a video I made showing the process: ruclips.net/video/Q4ak6V36KuU/видео.html 😊🌸
Can this same process be done with scented pelargoniums, or do they need to be treated differently? Just found your You Tube channel and LOVE IT! Thank you. BTW, I am in Zone 5B as wel in Maine.
Hi Donna! Thanks so much! 🥰 I've only tried this method with zonal pelargoniums, but I did a quick search on the internet and found that this method should also work with scented pelargoniums. I did buy a few scented pelargoniums and will be trying it out this winter. It's worth a try. Good luck, neighbor! 🌸
Hi there! The best time to take cuttings from your zonal bedding geraniums / pelargoniums is early Spring or late Summer. Here's a video that I made showing you the process on how to take geranium cuttings: ruclips.net/video/Umf6jZEQyr8/видео.html. 😊🌸
Nice video. Thank you. QUESTION: why don’t you remove the leaves at the same time that you remove the flowers and buds? I had a couple of nice big geraniums that I unfortunately threw on the compost pile. This year I’m going to try and overwinter them and see if I can get them to come back.
Hi Linda. Great question. I don't see any harm in removing the leaves before storing the geranium for the winter. I just don't do it due to it taking more time, but you definitely can do it. I'm so glad to hear that you'll be trying to overwinter your geraniums this winter. It's so worth it! ♥🌺
Late February to early March would be a perfect time for you. If you pot them up with potting mix, give them water, light and fertilizer, they should take off in no time. ♥
I watched your overwintering geraniums in the fall..I will check my geraniums tomorrow! Thank you! This is the first time I have done them this way...
Wonderful! I hope you're as equally surprised and have a little plant growth happening with your geraniums. ❤️🌱🌺

@@nancyyoungs933 I'm so glad your geraniums are doing well so far. Yay! ♥
This was timely. I haven't done anything with my dormant geraniums..today I'll check them. Thank you!
I worked on mine last week…..can’t wait to plant them up again! 💜
Nice!! ♥

Thank you so much. Definitely give overwintering geraniums a try. It's pretty easy and will save you from buying more next year! 😊🌹
Thank you for this. I put mine in storage for the first time and was wondering how to care for them.
You are very welcome. I hope they are thriving in storage. ❤️🌺

PS...My last frost is the third week of April here in western Colorado. My guess is early March to pot them up and put in light?

Im pretty sure I waited too long to bring mine in and they were already rotted but I will try again next year:)
Definitely worth trying again! ♥💐
