Intro was something he played to put his baby to sleep.. Classically trained pianist as a child. Built his own guitars and never learned to read music. One of his guitars is in the Smithsonian museum. Check out his interview on, What it means to be an American. It's great. He explains it all. No pedals or gadgets. Just one touchy guitar and a modified amp.

When he was young, he was fascinated by the effects that various guitarists made with different effects pedals (and combinations of effects pedals). But he couldn't afford all those expensive effects, so he set about learning how to produce his own special effects without all the expensive gear. He started by trying to imitate common pedal effects, but in doing so, he ended up inventing a wide array of techniques.

In my heart of hearts I honestly believe that Eddie is a reincarnation of Jimi Hendrix. I mean they were both innovative in the different ways to play guitar. Also they both were taken way before their time. Jiminy due to a drug overdose and Eddie to cancer. May they both rest in peace ❤❤❤. If anyone has never listened to Hendrix then please do so because you are missing out on a great experience. Which happens to be the name of one of his albums Jimi Hendrix Experience.

What's inspiring about EVH is that his influence changed an entire generations of players and his influence will continue on for many generations to come. There are so many wonderful guitar players that have come and gone and each of them had their own styles and influences, but EVH was something very very different. I'm just happy that I got to live in a time on this planets history that was shared with EVH. Incredible musician, genius, guitar scientist and player, regardless of his struggles or demons he had to deal with in his life. The man was a true blessing for music, period. God speed to EVH. He is sorely missed for sure. And bless all the other guitar players that have stood out with their talents. So many to mention. All unique and masters of this wonderful instrument.

@@CoachCastTV Couldn’t agree more Coach. I’m a HUGE ACDC FAN. Very first time I heard BACK IN BLACK album, in 1980, I was just 9 years old. And they stole my heart!! So Angus Young has Always been my favorite guitarist. But first time I heard Van Halen… IT BLEW MY MIND!! I never knew a guitar could make those sounds!! Then “ Eruption” came out, right before “ Girl you really got me now” on the album. Now the” Eruption “ solo is played as an Intro to that song. Esp on radio. But in 1985, Van Halen came to my home town in Montana. And I saved everything to go to that concert. Then Eddie played an even longer version of this solo. A combo of a bunch of songs. It was AWESOME. And still considered to be best Concert to ever play here!! Thanks for memories Coach. New Subscriber today!!

You and I sir are of the same ilk. I graduated in 87' and VH was an intranquil part of my teen years. My walls were adorned with their posters. I still have my shirt from the 84' concert! as well as the ticket stub. Paid $12.50. Boy has things changed! In my world the G.O.A.T. is a two headed creature with both EVH and SRV. Two different styles, but both masters of the guitar. Neither needs distortion to mask mistakes, because neither makes them. You hear every individual note clearly regardless of the difficulty or speed. Perhaps Mrs. Coach would like a nice solo instrumental from SRV like Riviera Paradise or Lenny.

And the part of this solo that weirds people out is where he uses “ Volume Swells”. They’re like HOW IS HE DOING THAT”? And yes Eddie had a large background in Classical music. So he used his volume knob, turning it up and down. He was ahead of his time, if we just heard of him today!!

Hey Mrs. Coach, just plugging a guitar into that system alone would be hard to control. What is playing here, HE INVENTED (for the most part)!!! Getting to show off is all a guitar solo is and he actually blended a few solos he has done. Eruption, from their first album, CHANGED THE GUITAR WORLD and what we’d expect every guitarist to belly up to.

I saw an interview with Sir/Doc Brian Harold May about he and Eddie. Wish I could find it again. When they were doing Star Fleet together they would play with the tapping (and other) technique. Teaching each other their own tricks. 40 years ago! To have been a fly on that wall! Making those guitars sing like other instruments and even voices! Mutual respect between the two for sure! (because everything always comes back to Queen 😉) I do give the nudge to Eddie but would have loved to have seen a guitar off between the 2 in their prime.

Eddie invented new ways to play the guitar that I’ve never been heard before and because of this they had to change the way they wrote guitar music. If you take the top four in my opinion guitar players what I would call my Mount Rushmore of guitar players and I’m not trying to step on anybody’s toes. This is just my opinion, Eddie Van Halen, Stevie Ray Vaughan, Jimi Hendrix, and Eric Clapton. Out of that group Eddie Van Halen sits on the peak. And I believe that the world of music suffered greatly with his loss because just think of how many more things he could’ve invented for the guitar sounds it had yet to be created. Shout out to Alex Van Halen, Eddie’s brother on the drums. Himself one of the top drummers ever.

The king KING EDWARD VAN HALEN. Eddie almost always had a little classical in his music because the fact that he was a classically trained on the piano even though he was never taught to read music. As a young boy playing the piano he just copied what the other kids played. Once he and his brother decided to start their own band and Alex taught himself how to play the drums while Eddie was out delivering papers to pay for the drum and so he took Alex's guitar and taught himself how to play and after years of 15 to 18 hours a day playing the guitar the world was finally introduced to the person who was to become the GREATEST GUITARIST EVER...(GOAT ) Eddie was a musical genius, savant, protagy and many believe that he came from another planet to show ups mere mortals what sounds could do on a guitar. His one downfall was starting to smoke at 12 and using a pick made of soething that would eventually give him cancer and finally kill him. I personally do not care what anyone thinks who is the greatest guitarist ever because we already know that the GOAT is Mr. Eddie Van Halen. And his son is almost as amazing as the father. He's not the best guitarist that ever lived. He's one of a number of best guitarists that live or lived. Others that you may have heard or not heard are Frank Zappa, Stevie Vai, Robert Fripp, Joe Satriani, Alan Holsworth, John Petrucci from Dream Theater, Rory Gallagher, Jimmy Page and Ritchie Blackmore.
Eruption is just the one piece he did in the way shown in the video. To be honest, most guitarists point out it may look and sound good, but it's not something they would do as playing the guitar is about feel and not how many notes you can play as quick as you can. I remember in 1978, there was talk of this new group blowing off the stage the main act Black Sabbath on the UK tour. My friend got their first album upon release and it was great. I remember hearing the second album at another friend's the following year. I was so disappointed. The only other Van Halen album I like is the last Dave Lee Roth album called 1984.
I listenened to all the DLR albums I had not heard llast year on streaming. There was some decent tracks, but I wasn't bowled over.
There is a live version of Steve's Spanking by Frank Zappa from 1981. The then current band featured Stevie Vai. The guitar duelling between them is brilliant.

The wonderful thing about music and other art is that each piece speaks individually to each person differently. There is no wrong answer to the question who is the best, because each person must decide that for themselves. There are certainly many talented individuals. For Coach, EVH is the best.

The great thing about Eddie Van Halen as a guitarist is that he didn't use a pedal board like a load of electric guitar players do. Only thing he used for certain sound effect was the whammy bar. Other than that it was just Eddie and the guitar.

Yes, absolutely special talent...and the sounds he could make are just amazing. You wonder how many hours he put into just discovering what he could actually do with that guitar.

Love Angus...AC/DC is Coach's favorite band. I overall like Eddie's sound a bit better, but both are legends, for sure.
