The last stanza is not Poe, it is a rewriting of 2 lines from Shakespeares poem Venus and Adonis, wherein Adonis dies. The band changed this to her death.
Oh dear... Once you get a song that I guess fitted your criteria a bit better it doesn't satisfy you musically neither from a critical or casual perspective... I totally agree with you all along with this one btw. Also, I'm getting a bit curious - now when we might get a cover-theme - whether Sinèad O'Connor's version of Prince's Nothing Compares 2 U would fit your criteria for this "vulnerable side theme". Have you heard it?
Thx for sharing...The album "The Angel & The Dark River", i hear regularly since i was around 18 years orld - 30 years - and it HITS ME EVERY single time! An overwhelming as beautiful as sad masterpiece!!! Maybe, it is because of what i had to endure at (since) this times of my existence, BUT the album "The silent enigma" from ANATHEMA is the only piece of art which effect as deep! I saw that you made a few videos of ANATHEMA, but not even one of their greatest pieces...MAYBE it is only my OPINION, but i REALLY really recommend you, to check out "The Silent Enigma" if you haven´t yet - EACH SINGLE SONG - is just perfect - EPIC ! On the same deep impact "thrilling pain-level" as "The angel and the dark river [1995] HQ" and "Turn Loose the Swans" [1993] from MY DYING BRIDE!!! Fare well and...
this is a truly amazing song, not nearly the norm for them or anyone, and it is fantastic, this is not nearly their best album, the stuff on the Swans album is the pinnacle of this band, they have made amazing stuff since but the Swans album was a game changer as they mixed death vocals and these somber ones... to near perfection imo,
Chosen for the theme and I stand by it. You've heard a couple of their other songs and this one takes a very different approach. It does close out the album which is otherwise their standard gothic death/doom. Aaron's lyrics (likely inspired by Poe) tend to be fictional narratives, so the whole cinematic 3rd person take on this makes sense.
I still think this works as a closer and I appreciate being able to check out a different side of them. I think the main thing was that it caught me off guard with it's cinematic approach. I was *not* ready for that :)
I was really into these guys ~2000 but haven't heard anything they've done since then. I vaguely remember this track, which I remember working well in the context of the album as the closer. It's a quiet, somber ending after the more traditional doom metal of the rest of the album. Not a track I would've picked for anyone to listen to MDB in isolation so I can totally understand your reaction. This kind of music IS super cheesy, but that's OK! Kinda like power metal in that respect. Cheese is good. It's why Italian food is so good! I think the cheese is one reason I prefer bands like Type O Negative because they really lean into it in a very tongue-in-cheek way that lets you know they're in on the joke.
The latest 2 albums have been amazing, more on the heavy side, which might not work for some (certainly not me haha), but really emotional and memorable
Well, this song is an outro.. a very weird choice for a youtube reaction. This song is to float on your bed as the album wraps up and you are about to sleep....
Yea and I bet you like Marvel movies and other capeshit in general for entertainment. It's gothic, it's romance. Sorry it didn't have some epic riffs and action for you, but there has to be music for the more uh... Intellectual of us too.
I really like them and own most of their albums, but still I share your confusion about their intentions. People praise them for their deep lyrics but sometimes it seems to me like a tribute or them playing around with dark themes (vampires and depressed psychos...). Still, I know that at least some of their songs are true and relate to Aaron's (the vocalist who also writes the lyrics) real life. As for this song - I agree with those who called it a bad choice. They just have so much more to offer. Many will claim their peak was 'Turn Loose The Swans' (their 2nd album) and that most of their stuff after 'Gods of the Sun' is not as great. I agree that TLTS is a really interesting and groundbreaking album ('Your River' or 'Crown of Sympathy' are good tracks to check out), but I like their latest stuff as well. They do explore different grounds on each album ('36.788%... Complete' being the strangest, yet still good). For emotional, different, yet not growly vocals I'd suggest 'A Sea To Suffer In' (from 'The Angel and the Dark River', 1995), which caught me by surprise the first time I heard it. But I'd love to hear your reaction for 'The Wreckage Of My Flesh' (from 'Songs of Darkness Words of Light', 2004), which I consider to be a perfect song and quite unique in its approach.
it's a great, beautiful song, not every song needs to be analyzed intellectually, sometimes you must simply feel it or give it up and come back other time
Like any great artist you need to view the entire context, do van gogh's Sunflowers have entire meaning outside the context of his life and art ? doubtful. You need to understand the context of the art, and I know you understand that however you may have have jumped on the anti prematurely, try two winters only, then come back
They have SO MUCH better songs than this. And better albums. This wasn't a very good choice. Even the title track "Like Gods Of The Sun" would have been better, an actual song. Or "A Kiss To Remember" Some others I recommend are "My Body, A Funeral", "A Cruel Taste Of Winter", "From Darkest Skies", "Abandoned As Christ"
So far I've checked out A Kiss To Remember and A Secret Kiss from them so I think I have a pretty good understanding of their core sound. From that angle I don't mind looking at odd song but that I know what they excel at.
My Dying Bride - Dreadful Hours...This track sums up this band pretty much...it's a masterpiece.!!
That is indeed a great song
not as somber and staid like this one... but a great song, nothing tops Swans though
The last stanza is not Poe, it is a rewriting of 2 lines from Shakespeares poem Venus and Adonis, wherein Adonis dies. The band changed this to her death.
This is the last track on the album so if you want to listen to another one from the same album try "A Kiss to Remember".
That one has a reaction already!
A piece of unparalleled genius and beauty
Violin is amazing.....they were without violin for 5 albums from 98 to 2006...they bing it back in 2009.
you can play this song in your funeral
I would like to point out a very interesting song by Shores of Null, it's called Beyond the shores, it's very long but I think you might like it
Oh dear... Once you get a song that I guess fitted your criteria a bit better it doesn't satisfy you musically neither from a critical or casual perspective... I totally agree with you all along with this one btw.

if you do them again try something from either the dreadful hours album or turn loose the swans

Awesome song
I got to 4 minutes in and thought, bored already. Then it got to 6 minutes and counting and I thought, that was it?
Yup, I'd wager that might be a lot of people's experience. It's an album closer and I think it would best be experienced within that context.
Yea and I bet you like Marvel movies and other capeshit in general for entertainment. It's gothic, it's romance. Sorry it didn't have some epic riffs and action for you, but there has to be music for the more uh... Intellectual of us too.
If one was to hear their very early works 🤷🏻♂️in contrast to this? Exactly 👌One might be slightly confused to say the least... ✍️
I really like them and own most of their albums, but still I share your confusion about their intentions.

Question is: Do they fit the theme?...
@@progperljungman8218 true...🤔

I kind of find this a bit generic. Sounds like the standard music for a heartbreaking scene in a period movie.
