Ghost Reveries is such an amazing album. Love your channel, really interesting to see how you do videos and analyse some stuff. Great stuff, keep it up!
If you like this, check out Opeth - Windowpane. The whole Damnation album is mellow, dark prog rock (mixed, engineered, produced by Steven Wilson, who also played all keys/mellotron on it). 'To Bid You Farewell' is also an outstanding melodic track from the earlier years (1996). Then there is the absolute masterpiece from this album, Ghost of Perdition.
Hey man! I would like to give you some information about the context of this song. 'Alright!' ;) This is the closing song on the Ghost Reveries (2005) record. You mentioned it being kind of like a song that serves as a transition between other songs, which it also could have been, but isn't. This album is, in my opinion, a concept album. The Opeth fanbase is very divided really about it being an actual concept album or not. I would like to add that the way the songs are ordered on the album version, is not the way how I listen to this album. The 7th song on the album, 'The Grand Conjuration' (Isolation Years being the 8th and final track), is the second track in the order I listen to this album, as it portrays the protagonist giving his soul and fate to Satan. I must say that I find Isolation Years a very powerful track to end such an album. With all the heaviness that has happened during the album, Isolation Years serves as kind of a moment to reflect upon the story and what has been going on on Ghost Reveries. If you would like to know my order of listening to Ghost Reveries and the context behind it, I would love to share it to you! Thanks for reacting to this beautiful song and to all of the other music, I think you're doing a very great job! Thank you for making my day with this reaction Geebz, keep it going!!

Those long sustained notes in the chorus are, in fact, not coming from a keyboard or synth, but a guitar, with some assistance from an E-Bow. For those that have never heard of it, the E-Bow is a little device that you hold in your pick hand around the strings, and it uses electromagnetism to vibrate the strings, creating infinite sustain. From what I understand, Steven Wilson was the one that introduced Mikael Åkefeldt to it during the Blackwater Park sessions and he put it on a few songs (most notably The Drapery Falls, Bleak, and the title track.)

Knew you would 100% dig this one. One of my favorites. Opeth definitely has got some wild songs as far as the depth of the music and the complexity OR the simplicity they are capable of when called for - incredible. My favorite band all time!
PLEASE react to Burden - Opeth It is an excellent intermediate between the mellow and the heavy Opeth. A little more "mainstream" for the 'diehard' Opeth fans: but as a huge Opeth fan myself I absolutely love that song. Excellent decomposing!
My first exposure to Opeth was at Download Festival 2017. The song was Sorceress, and I was hooked. Really cool vibe, heavy and dark elements, intertwined with guitars and keys playing in unison. Give it a try!
I am loving the channel and your wonderful insights. Opeth are just amazing. Godhead’s Lament is one of my favourite songs. Heavy, dynamic, catchy and just intriguing 😍 I am also not surprised you also seem to be fascinated by Tool and Devin Townsend. All of them rule!
Would love for you to listen to some of The Dear Hunter. Is There Anybody There? or A Night on the Town would be great listens from a composers point of view as Casey (the guitarist, vocalist, and writer) is a composer.
If you want Opeth's softer side on its own anything from Damnation is amazing. The album is the soundtrack of a particular mood. Opeth's ability to seamlessly transition between heavy and light and dark is what sets them apart. To that end I'd recommend Bleak or The Drapery Falls for songs that best capture their ability to blend moods and intensities together.
It's just fun to watch someone become an Opeth fan. Lots of people will recommend you all their old stuff, but their last 3 albums have been really cool too, in particular I recommend 'Moon Above, Sun Below', River, and Spring MCMLXXIV.
There's this old Japanese jazz-fusion band called CASIOPEA that I think you'd enjoy ! I strongly recommend by starting watching any of the songs from their live-performance DVD on RUclips from 1985. Thank you so much for this awesome reaction video btw!
Love seeing and hearing your reactions. There's something special about watching someone hear and appreciate something you love yourself. Sooo glad you found Opeth, and it's great hearing a professional composer commenting on metal. Here's something a little different. Blind Guardian - Time What Is Time, and maybe Bard's Song, but...Time What Is Time. Total Power Metal.
Mikael Akerfeldt is a spectacular vocalist and guitarist with a extremely wide range of styles he is able to perform competently. The contrast of different styles on Opeth tracks is why they remain a compelling listen even after hearing them for decades. I love watching people encounter their music for the first time.
Another great song, from a great album, by a great band. I've been hooked on their music for a long time now and love old and new Opeth. The Album that this is from is my favourite, it's got all the things and it felt like it was the culmination of all of their experience, skill, and creativity.
This song is really underrated and a bit in the shadow of the other songs on this album I'm really happy to see someone actually give this a proper listen and really react to it like you did, good stuff man!
If you havent yet, i would highly recommend their concert at red rocks on youtube. One of the best metal/melodic shows on the tube even on a cold windy night!
Opeth played in a comics store for Record store day 2013, available on RUclips and not too shabby 🤟, perfect fit if you focus in on more acoustical performances for sure!
The chord progression in the chorus is so perfect it seems impossible. I think it goes from a i to a #VII+ (augmented sharp 7). Lots of unique chord qualities. These things are full of extensions, substitutions, and uncommon voicings. The guitar is tuned DADFAD.
I love your work man, I have been a fan of Opeth for many many years and it's great to see someone give another perspective to new listeners and fans alike You should really set up a Patreon dude, I think you'd get a lot of support, you deserve it!
Super glad to see you doing more Opeth. I hope they don't wear out their welcome for you because I guarantee you'll never stop receiving requests for their songs! Speaking of which... It'd be super cool if you gave "Ghost of Perdition" a go. Love the content! Keep it up.
If you're starting an acoustic series I highly recommend Opeth for this: in my opinion, a must have for an acoustic playlist. I suggest songs like Benighted, Credence and Face In The Snow
Love your videos and de comps. Also stoked on how they aren’t monetized and everything you do is to promote the artist and their music. I would love for you to de comp any of Wintersuns songs from their first album or Sons of Winter and Stars off their second album. Or The Forest that Weeps (Summer) off of their third album. Very progressive melodic death metal that demonstrated true mastering of their instruments. Keep it going love everything about your channel.
Opeth primarily creates concept albums where each song is a part of a greater whole. Isolation Years is the last track on the Ghost of Perdition album and it is absolutely a beautiful send off, an epilogue of sorts that lets you float out after the intense journey of the preceding album.
I still always listen to albums all the way through. I wish you would do some of that on this channel as well. I know it would be a lot of work, but Damnation would be a great one to do. Plus you'll see that Opeth can do an entire album of this type of song, not just one track.

Knew you would 100% dig this one. One of my favorites. Opeth definitely has got some wild songs as far as the depth of the music and the complexity OR the simplicity they are capable of when called for - incredible. My favorite band all time!
keep em coming, would love to see some videos going into technical details around mixing and instrument layering tio
Face of Melinda !!
This song has always made me feel like the guitar is crying. So much emotion in this track.
PLEASE react to Burden - Opeth
It is an excellent intermediate between the mellow and the heavy Opeth.
Love this song, love Opeth. You make by far the best song reaction videos I've come across on RUclips, I'm really enjoying the content. 👌
Yes! I second this big time. Those two songs are the perfect choice too!
The Myrrors - Warpainting
this song got me into psychedelic rock
This is the closing track of the Ghost Reveries album. Very beautiful and melancholic.
Love your videos man, can't wait for you to check out Opeth's older & newer stuff, they're an absolutely amazing band.
This song always makes me break down in full blown tears. This is my mother's (RIP) story.
So many GOOD Opeth songs. Welcome to the rabbit hole that is Opeth. It's a long, winding ride down but very enjoyable.
Try either Windowpane or Weakness from their remastered Damnation album
Damnation is an entirely mellow/chill album with no death-metal growls
Listening for the first time with you on this one.
Mikael Akerfeldt is a spectacular vocalist and guitarist with a extremely wide range of styles he is able to perform competently. The contrast of different styles on Opeth tracks is why they remain a compelling listen even after hearing them for decades. I love watching people encounter their music for the first time.
Really beautiful music. Opeth is like no other.
Another great song, from a great album, by a great band. I've been hooked on their music for a long time now and love old and new Opeth. The Album that this is from is my favourite, it's got all the things and it felt like it was the culmination of all of their experience, skill, and creativity.
Wicked video, and many people still listen to albums!
Great song choice!
This song is really underrated and a bit in the shadow of the other songs on this album I'm really happy to see someone actually give this a proper listen and really react to it like you did, good stuff man!
More Opeth!!! The Moor, Bleak, The Drapery Falls, Hope Leaves, Ghost of Perdition, Burden.... Great places to start
That is very good choice of a song.
I love your work man, I have been a fan of Opeth for many many years and it's great to see someone give another perspective to new listeners and fans alike
You should really set up a Patreon dude, I think you'd get a lot of support, you deserve it!
I haven't watched the video yet but I know you're gonna have goosebumps.
Also if you're wondering, it's a 70-something Les Paul through a CRANKED Vox AC-30.
Wish you all the best sir, this channel is very therapeutic for my mental health. And coffee cheers to you ☕
Thank you Joshua :)
Belakor- Venator
Absolute masterpiece gives me goose bumps from beginning to end!
I would highly recommend the song Deliverance, it may be their heaviest song, but it's also beautiful
Benighted by opeth is fantastic, acoustic and melancholy. A true masterpiece
Plus you'll see that Opeth can do an entire album of this type of song, not just one track.
love when the ppl reacts to Opeth!
