Not enough can be said about Opeth. Probably the best band of the last 25 years. Mikael Åkerfeldt is a generational talent, and the musicians in the band are all A+.

  • @Plastikdoom

Oh, Opeth is the epitome of progressive metal, they’ve been around a long time, decades now. Mikael can sing, he’s awesome, and they are all. Don’t let the heavier parts dissuade you from checking out more of them. Especially their technical skills, they play in different timescales and sing, in a another, all together, and make epic music. And their songs all have varying levels of heavy parts through out them.

You seem like one who would very much enjoy the softer side of Opeth, the melodic nature of which you got a taste of in this song.
I would suggest the album entitled "Damnation" as all the tracks are very mellow.

  • @tornoutlaw
    @tornoutlaw Год назад +23

Martin Mendez basslines are so rewarding to learn. Very melodious, for the most part not too technically challenging, with a sense of a drama that they could stand on their own but serves the songs well.

Oh boy, another one for the Opeth rabbit hole :D
Imho you should check all their songs in the studio version first.
Even though they are great live, the mixing and added layers on the album versions often add a lot more to the atmosphere of their songs!
Other songs by them you could/should check out:
    - Reverie / Harlequin Forest
    - Burden
    - Windowpane
    - Bleak
    - Delieverance
    - Faith in Others
    ... etc. 😄

I am so happy you are doing a reaction to Opeth. I know this is not your style of music but this band has been around over 30 years and there is something in their catalogue for everyone. Four years ago I would never have listened to anything with harsh vocals or growling but hearing reactions to bands like Opeth, Epica, Unleash the Archers and Jinger i have come to appreciate the skill required to sing in that style.

Opeth is one of the greatest and surprising band on earth, quite intimidating first (because of their death metal roots, long tracks and complexity) but if you listen carefully and let them a chance, it quickly became a drug. If the metal side is not for you, their catalog is plenty of tracks without growl and metal vibes. Try the entire "Damnation" album.

Regarding the lyrics, he used to introduce the song live with "here's a nugget of information". Adds a little to it i think.
One could paint the words with occult, mystical associations. Lost teachings and wisdom, darkness wanting to take over and so on. Dark vs light. Control vs spirituality.
"Forgot the source of the flow and everything would change" look into flow state if you're not familiar with it :) The source of the flow is also a very spiritual term, 'source' referring to some higher state, mind, order outside of ourselfs.

Now you might want to check out NeObliviscaris ,an Aussie progressive metal band that has dual vocals, dual lead rhythm guitars, thumping and running bass lines incredible drumming and violin. Yes I said violin. Most people eventually get past the harsh vocals after a few listens because the musical talent along with great transitions in these masterpiece compositions is hard to ignore and re a necessity for a true rollercoaster ride with tons of eargasms. So please check out Forget Not,Devour Me Colossus or And Plague Flowers The Kaleidoscope by NeO. Thanks!

And even then I don't really acknowledge the lyrics when listening to this kind of metal, with the growls. Those vocals are more like another imstrument to me. Another type of rhythm instrument with pitch. It doesn't register in my 'language' brain, but in my 'music' brain.

@@papaskazoo5860 Exactly, also its a tool to show feelings. Telling a story without emotions is weird. Sometimes you have to take other parts. If you speak in different perspectives or showing inner struggles between good and evil decisions.
I hated Slayers Guitar solos long time because they are weird and often make horrible noices. But it would be much weirder if they play normal 80s van halen solos over a song like "angel of death" were they literally speak about the horrors of the holocaust. So i appriciate their art, because they give the horror feeling exactly the right tone.

You have jumped into the Opeth well of wonders with a "difficult" song, written at the peak of their most brutal and dark period so I can understand it's not easy. But le me tell you that Opeth, especially Mikael which is the only original member of the first lineup, have never been somewhere near predictable. Always influenced, always changing, always surprising. What next? 😄😄😄 When a girl goes playing with her hair, you know that something great is happening... No, more seriously, you just listened to the best ever written metal opera (in my humble opinion of course)...
Diving into their discography would mean you're into a lot of treatment.

great, now that you dive dep in Opeth, in no time, prob a year, you'd listen to most of the bands, connected to Mikael Akerfeldt - Katatonia, Edge of Sanity, Bloodbath, Hypocrisy, Dissection, Pain... I could go on and on.

Yeah, Opeth are pretty amazing. If you'd like to check out other Progressive Metal that might be more to your liking, I can think of two bands off the top of my head. Tool is less operatic, but the singer sings mostly clear (less Opera and Death, more Prog Rock). Meshuggah has more in the regard of virtuosic ensemble but is way less harmonic than Opeth (more Death, less Opera).
Tools most liked song is probably "The Pot," but I like "Sober" the most probably because of that one haunting live performance in '93. Meshuggah's best known song is probably "Bleed."

I think you're listening to it at a too low volume to distinguish how each instument is contributing to the different sections of the song individually...

if you are not listening to Opeth on your own time....you are wasting time....period!
Opeth is like heaven to my ears.... everything i look for in music can be found in a opeth song.....on a grand scale with creative forces of musical genius talent at work.

Mix Opeth reactions with some Tool and you'll be lost in rabbit holes for quite a bit... :)
