Man I try to explain to younger 20 somethings that there was a time of the Soviet Union and a cold war etc. I get blank looks. However when I quote Billy Joel at that time when he said "These young people never saw a rock and roll show before. I wanted to give them everything!" their eyes light up when they watch this video.

Great that Billy Joel can do a Beatles cover in the USSR and everyone knows the words.
To be fair, it might have been the only pop/rock song in the English-speaking world that said something blatantly positive about the USSR.
While I don’t think Joel’s voice is indistinguishable from McCartney’s, I can say that this a great cover of a classic Beatle’s song
The added/increased role of the piano adds a whole new level to it
Billy is a monster on the mic, but so was Paul. We never got to really hear the Beatles play this song live. They were too busy breaking up, making up, and making new music. But with that said, yes the version of the song is great, like most cover versions are. Even the dude's version in the movie Yesterday is fire.
One of the things that I love about Billy Joel is his ability to change how his voice to fit that song. For most of this, he sounds barely indistinguishable from Paul McCartney. I am a major Beatles fan, but I have to say that I like Billy Joel's cover better than the original.

This was the late 80s. The USSR was decades removed from being what it was during Stalin's reign and were largely modernized by this time. The USSR dissolved like 4 years after this anyways.

Most post soviet economies are also failing. Also, it's not like Gorbachev was the biggest factor in the transition to the free market. The parliament had been infiltrated with anti communists for a while by the time Gorbachev was in office.

The song "Back in the USSR" is a slight, just as RAMNSTEIN'S song "AMERIKA" is
It was intended as that, but I think (and this is the reason I love this version more than any other) Billy flipped it on its head, actually showing how grateful he - and by extension, all western music - was coming "Back [to] the USSR". And he went the extra mile and made it an extra tribute to the people living there - while on tour, he replaced the "Moscow" with the local town!
