- Sewing for my husband, Jerry, improving the fit of a tee shirt for round back and forward shoulder. Note: The style of this tee is a DROPPED SHOULDER like the tee he was wearing at the beginning. The sleeve is not meant to stop at his shoulder tip.

Jerry is just such a sweetheart and the shirt looks good on him. I did have little problem seeing exactly how you traced & cut the sleeve part. Could you just hold up the sleeve pattern so I can get a better understanding of it? I so appreciate your tutorials.

Professor Joy: Happy Wife - Happy Life! Get the pattern paper at wawak, it has number and letter, l inch for reference and it is the correct weight. You two are such a beautiful couple! Glad you are sewing for Jerry! My hubby has to wear button, collar shirts and must have pocket. I don't make them and I don't iron them, take to cleaners! 'Can't wait to see next shirt!

Thanks for your easy-to-understand instructions for these pattern alterations. I make those same changes on my patterns. Can't tolerate backs that are cut the same as the front. I also have to add width at the back armhole area for my forward shoulders, and sometimes narrow the front at the armhole level.

You are one smart lady
Joy, just an idea, copy the part of the pattern that is going to be removed (rounded back) or added (sway back) when straightening the back line to cut on folded and add it/remove it from the side. You don't need to measure any more. I remember Peggy did it when creating a two piece sleeve from a one piece sleeve. I think Judy does it too: when correcting one side by cutting off, she uses the cut off fabric as a pattern to cut on the other side too.

Hey, my husband is older than Jerry and has a rounder back than Jerry does. You have inspired me to make him a better fitting "Uniform" tee shirt.

I noticed the slanted wrinkles at the back of the shirt you made in the arms-eye area below Jerry’s left shoulder, which indicates his left shoulder bone is lower (less straight) than his right, correct? I can actually see the difference in the slope of his shoulders from the front at the beginning of the video. The fitting techniques you demonstrated are very helpful, Joy...thank you!
I didn't want to make Jerry feel bad that he has a falling shoulder. He noticed it himself in the video though. He is really concerned as to what may be causing it. I certainly can address that in the next garment.
@@Joy4650B So sweet and thoughtful of you, Joy 💕. If it’s any consolation, uneven shoulder height or slope isn’t that uncommon, especially as we age. It’s caused by structural imbalances in our muscles, joints, and/or spine. It can even be a result of one leg being shorter than the other. My doctor told me that the discs in our spines may begin to compress with age, which is why many of us “shrink” in height over time. Aging is definitely not for the faint of heart, or so I’ve learned. 😊

The white ruler with sliding rulers is the Hurth ruler created by Ursula Hurth owner of Home Atelier in Germany. Threads had an article on it and you can find info on RUclips. It also helps measure the shoulder slope because it also has an angle grade.
I copied a long sleeves polo shirt of my husband on the ironing board. And made 3 of them exactly the same: placket, collar, flat felled shoulder seams, coverstitched hem. He is wearing them regularly. The wheel system may damage the fabric of the item you want to copy. I've seen the method I used , used by several teachers on RUclips: I placed the pattern paper on the ironing board, then the shirt and pinned the seams in the board. You can put a thick blanket on the cutting board in order to be able to pin. The pins must go straight down. I slightly lifted the shirt from the pins and dotted with a pen between the pins on the pattern paper. The holes made by the pins in the pattern paper should suffice. Pin the back and copy, pin the front and copy, pin a sleeve folded along the seam and copy the front and mark a notch for the front, turn the sleeve to copy the back , align it on the line from the shoulder point copy and mark 2 notches for the back so that you get a full sleeve pattern.
The only difficulty thereafter is to take into account the flat felled seams when cutting the fabric and to make a nice placket .

Joy, are you going to show stitching Jerry's shirt up on your serger? I think those who don't have that experience will appreciate that.
You could have used your Sure Fit Design stylus, too. Do you have the men's shirt design kit from SFD? My honey has a round back. I could do this for him.
Hi Joy. Great video. I have a question though. Peggy never adds extra fabric/width to the side/armhole seams to make up for the round back adjustment. Do you think it's necessary.? I thought the Tee looked too wide at the shoulders on his back and the sleeves looked the same length as the copied Tee. I also thought the shoulder seams was way too low on his arm. I think the shoulders should end at the shoulder edge. Just my opinion.😯
This is a DROPPED shoulder style, and that is what Jerry wanted. Completely different than the seam at the shoulder point. The sleeves were quite a bit longer than the original. Peggy does show to add fabric at the armhole.

When you lower the front neck it takes the wrinkle away over the belly. Does he need a slight drop shoulder on the left side?
Yes, Elizabeth, he does have a shoulder that has gotten lower. CRAZY! I can't figure out what is causing that. His shoulders have always been his best feature.
Enjoyed the video. How did you finish the neckline on the green shirt?
I made a band like RTW and put it on. The finished band that shows is 1/2".
I also used the craft paper from Walmart, too thick for patterns. Do you have a recommendation for pattern paper?
Medical exam table paper, available on Amazon. In a pinch (like midnight sewing on Saturday) I’ve used wax paper, but it is a little more narrow and I had to use sharpie marker for drawing. Vellum is good, but more expensive. Hop that helps.
Joy can you tell me if it’s worth having a cover stitch machine? I have two sergers and have been thinking about a cover stitch machine.
You can use a double needle on your sewing machine and get the same result. The issue -- for me -- is you need 3 to 4 spools of the same color thread. I wound 2 bobbins for Jerry's shirt. Worked great, but now I have two bobbins I'll probably have to unwind.
